    Thank you! Repairing an old violin I found at a garage sale. It was in pieces and cracked in many places. A throw away I was told. I wanted to try and repair it. Your videos are so well appreciated!
    She is slowly coming back to life. Though will never be as new. She will be mine though, if she plays;)

    You skipped over the "color" step. You went from "white" to "color" without showing us how to color it.

    This is good information to know, thank you for your time sir. :)
    I recently found an old violin and have been trying to repair it- and hope to learn to play now that my wrist is healed from a sports injury.
    But one question I have is that I have been hearing that alcohol based varnish is more risky to use than oil-based, as it could effect the sound of the instrument in the long-run. Is this true?

    Ive heard that cheap varnish makes violin plate resist to vibrate. Would sanding cheap violin like Stentor Standard and applying some better varnish make it sound nicer or there will be not much difference and its not worth it?

    When retouching varnish, please advise any varnish is acceptable in case color is what I wanted. secondly, varnishing is fine without removing strings.

    What abrasive grit sand paper do you use to wet sand? Is that mineral oil and pumice? Followed by mineral oil and rotten stone to polish?

    My violin is applied oil varnish. Any problem with it if the touch up using alcohol varnish? Is it the normal practice to use alcohol varnish as touch up? Thanks

    I noticed two things. You did not remove the strings to work on it. Also behind the neck looks like it has no stain or varnish. Is that how it is supposed to be?

    • @karad5064
      @karad5064 5 років тому +2

      It is tradition that neck should not have varnish, primer only. Second, it is small repair, if he had removed strings, he would have do setup of bridge and strings again (more unnecessary work).

  • @MawoDuffer

    Now I understand why there is not varnish on the neck.

      Mark Lozano First of all I hope no one is painting a violin. That would completely obliterate the sound. Its varnish lol

    Violins are not for look...some of the best sounding violins are ugly... look at the Guarneri violins- they are ugly. But they worth 10 to 30 millions...who care if there’s some imperfections on the vanish ? In fact most modern violins varnishes are imitating the old looking violins...
