As someone who already knows English cursive, is actually kind of weird writing cursive in another language. It feels familiar, but also different enough to feel awkward.

I just finished my online Russian Language lesson today, I am into it going on 130 days, my pronunciation is well an epic fail, on the other hand, I surprised myself with being able to translate Russian into English without looking it up first. And picking the correct words that I hear. Not perfect I make mistakes, but I am 100% better at it than I was when I started. I might be up to the first grade come 2021 in speaking and writing skill. after all at 65, I am still young. Sometimes I am still an 8-year-old boy! I have been making a habit of watching one Russian Movie and to listen to some music every day. It's really a beautiful language.

This is my Main Teacher (although her crappy handwriting has caused me grief)
A good plan is to find 2-4 solid teachers and Cross Reference ...
I have a digital alphabet downloaded with all Cyrillic letters and phoenetic pronunciation whicn I often check against Teachers handwriting and pronunciation..
Every day or so, I will try another site or app.. but I think it is best to stick with a single Main teacher... whoever that will be,

I know this is an older video and others have left helpful comments, but in case anyone sees mine, I'd like to say I'm now learning Cyrillic after studying Latin script of course and also Arabic/Persian scripts, and one thing I've learned is that when it comes to handwriting, there are simply many ways of writing each letter. Each person will write each letter somewhat differently, but the important thing is to know the general template of each letter, and be able to distinguish each one from the others. Especially when the letters are similar, even between languages or scripts. In the case of Cyrillic, half of the challenge is simply remembering the differences in phonetics between Cyrillic and Latin, but within Cyrillic, some letters are very similar and could be written in different ways. It's important to practice and write what feels most natural for each letter, and try to create the appropriate variation between each. I recommend using a proper writing tool, like fountain pens, to practice and to enjoy the process of calligraphy. Then when it comes to writing for communication or further studying, you will feel much more confident, especially if your journey includes multiple languages.

The trickiest part of writing in cursive is connecting letters, without knowing how to connect them the right way, writing can turn into a total mess. Some letters have little tails to be connected with following letters, but others don't, so we should add those tails, without the proper connection "ам" can look like "аи". for instance.

It's very interesting. At school, learning Russian was compulsory in Hungary when I was a kid (in the 80-s, during the cold war).
We learnt Russian cursive right from the beginning, alongside with grammar and vocabulary. I never forgot it, and when I restarted my Russian studies in my mid-30-s, cursive writing come back to me almost instantly.
I must admit, it is still super difficult. Both writing and reading.
And I also must admit that I cannot write in block letters in Russian at all.

In calligraphic lessons in Sofia i learned that Latin script combines the letters all in words but basicly in cyrillic they 'space' all letters with a little room and do NOT connect them. However, i break that rule because even a Bulgarian painter said i had such beautiful cyrillic writing when combining it with the rules i learned in my Belgian country. But be careful: if you omit the endings before and after on the lower line, your 'l' and 'm' lose their functions and become other letters. So you always have to make some 'bows' below. i cannot post a picture but perhaps later, i will make a video when i write in Macedonian, Serbian, Bulgarian and Russian better with each some different styles and some other letters in each of them! But i feel devine with these very old scripts that find their origin at Kyril and Methodi in Bulgaria and in Ohrid, now North Macedonia (of course i visit all places there and in all slavinic countries since i arrived here in 2015 after 50 Belgian years... +je

(haha) So now i can invent my own calligraphy in Russian and later on will publish this for free on Facebook to use or to invent your own script. i admit: Cyrillic is much more beautiful to write poems in than Dutch, but Flemish poems can be wonderful too. i live Bulgaria and now i love Russia too!!!! ❤️❤️💯💯💯 And you too! (it is platonic and i am 58 so do not worry and just consider it as a real compliment, but as a Russian woman... you know for sure, i have a wonderful Russian girl friend born in Krasnodar that moved 30 years ago for her child to Bulgaria as well in 'LOVEch', with beautiful written T's in her name (Tatjana). i checked your remark and even Saint Petersburgh and Moskou have different 'styles' in calligraphy. i followed calligraphy in Belgium for Latin Scripts and we have some five versions. At Sofia University they have a 'preferred' one, but all 'systems' you refer to date frome even before 1970 and earlier. The same tendency you see that writte language always was apart in 'business language' (all languages, we had this in French, German, Dutch, English and it existed for Bulgarian and Russian as well, so is the subject in Bulgarian prolonged like 'мъжът' instead of 'мъж' and only for male, but this is only written and never pronounced when speaking. The same for callingraphy. My brother learned Russian in 1975 and then it was absolutely forbidden to connect any script letter, and obliged to connect them in Dutch or Flemish writing, now i am inventing a nex style of connecting in Bulgarian and Russian handwriting. If there can be no confusion, it is allowed. So Daria is daring modern. The old style teachers that each 'only this is allo ed!' are losing lots of students under the road now. We have to evolve with our time and students. And indeed: i love the spartan way and raised my son that way, but this is generally spoken where i teach not always allowed. Like the beautiful T, they used to be connected at all three vertical stripes to the top line, now it is allowed to make them go down like some old Greek writers did as well some 2400 years ago... +je

What I've found most interesting is that the initial premise is blown.
I was instructed that the point of cursive handwriting is to NOT lift the ручка. The only times you lift is when dotting i and j and crossing t and x.
All the lifting seems either superfluous or indictment.
The best part is the connection. We've seen the memes, but from what I understand, it's almost a point of pride to make things illegible.

a suggestion if i may add, when you try explaining to english speakers about writing the cursive small letter "з" and about going slightly below the line. Tell them that it's similar to how when writing cursive english that the small letter y goes slightly below the line. It may be a simpler way for them to grasp that aspect. Love the video by the way Russian and other slavic languages have always sounded so facinating to me

I know this will be extra work for you, but it would be very, very helpful if you could list in the description each letter and at what time in the video it occurs (like B 4:16) so that by clicking on it, we can quickly and directly jump to just the specific letters where we are having problems instead of guessing and going forward and backward.

Actually the smal letter "з" in cursive reminds me of the letter "z" in old german writing. Its called "Sütterlin script". My grandma used to write this script. She was born in 1927.

Извините, UA-cam изменил мой стиль текста. Я хотел сказать, когда-то маленький т выглядит как m. Также малый д выглядит как знак частичной производной в математике. Я надеюсь, вы меня понимаете.

Hello dear teacher Daria. Please, what's the name of the graphic sign on the letter ë/ Ë in russian? The same sign is called Umlaut in German as it occurs with the letters A,O and U as follows ( ä/Ä) , (ö/Ö). and (ü/Ü). Thanks.

Fun fact: it's easier to identify the proper meaning of Cyrillic letter in cursive form than the other way because "D" in Cyrillic cursive is "D" in portuguese cursive, "3" in Cyrillic cursive is "Z" is portuguese cursive as well, etc...

Hi, thank you for taking time to teach us. I have a little question: is the dash above the 't" mandatory?

    • @soon_to_emerge
      @soon_to_emerge 3 роки тому +1

It's been 2 months, but I'll answer anyway. When I was in school, we didn't include that little line above т, but I see some people using it to better differentiation between т and m. So it's pretty optional. Besides, cursive can be pretty individual, my handwriting changed a bit in middle school bc I tend to use less movements, so I don't write т as it is shown in this video, and small case д I do in one smooth movement.
