    First Let Me thank you for the great lessons I am a young 75 year old Guitar player but have really wanted try the banjo as a child we would listen to the grand Old Opry from Wheeling west Virginia every Friday or Saturday on the radio Can't remember what day but I always loved to hear the banjo tunes but back then where I lived there was no banjo teachers or music shops so I wound up with a Sears Guitar but that made me happy at least I could learn Bluegrass and country tunes actually got good enough to play in some local bar bands long story short I tried to learn the banjo from video tapes but never really got good but after watching your lessons on UA-cam started to understand more about playing the banjo and have actually played some songs that sound pretty good and I really like the way you talk to us on your videos kind of like talking to a friend or someone you know with a little humor thrown in Keep up the great lessons and again Thank You.

    I'll have to give that one a whirl. Thank you! While I was working my way through this instrument I started doing that 4th string index thing a lot I kind of like it to play some partial chords and stuff in a up sort of sweep too. I learned in your lessons ain't no wrong way if it works for you. Oh yeah I also tried picky picks about 4 months ago, I haven't put my dunlops or nationals on since then, I really like them. Thanks again!

    Hey Jim, hope you've had a good Christmas. I'm just going back through your videos after not picking up the banjo in nearly 8 months. (Open heart surgery) Starting to make progress though, tonight is the first night I could fret the neck. The last few nights I've been trying to get the muscle memory back with my rolls. I'm about half my normal speed at the moment but it'll come back. Great to have banjo back on my knee and your videos on my phone again. Have a great new year buddy.

    Jim you mentioned melody notes. I know that you said that you never bothered much with scales. What is the best way for a beginner to find the melody notes? Memorizing the fret board seems like a daunting task. Would you consider doing a lesson on how to find melody notes in a song? I can guarantee that you will get views as this is a much discussed topic on banjo hangout. Many of us struggle to find the melody of.

    • @JimPankey
      @JimPankey  3 роки тому +3

      I think the reason it gets discussed so much is no one is willing to do what it takes to learn to find the melodies.
      Sing the melody. Now, sing the first note of that melody. Now, find that note on your banjo. Sing the second note. Find that note. Repeat process until you've got it. It won't be easy at first. You will get better at it.
      Yes, it's a lot of trial and error. No, there's not a formula for it. Will ear training help? Yes, but the process of hunting those melodies will train your ear.
      So, I probably can't do a video on it. No one wants to hear what I have to say on it, as they're looking for "the trick". There is none.

      @@JimPankey Thanks Jim! I am in it for the long haul. I don't want to just copy what I hear or see other people play. I want to find the notes on the neck. I have no music background at all so it is a struggle. Love your videos! I watch em all.

    • @GeorgeCampbell1964
      @GeorgeCampbell1964 Рік тому

      @@JimPankey the "trick" is to practice. One of my heroes, Mike Aldridge said once that " it didn't come a bit easier for him than it does for the rest of you" also, "the thought of giving up is never an option".

    • @JimPankey
