Impressive. But for a more realistic simulation of a religious experience, Derren should try adding a crushing sense of guilt into the mix.

Another important factor is that Natalie was likely not used to expressing such deep personal information about herself. When you do this it can produce unexpectedly strong emotional reactions, like crying, vomiting or even blacking out. So a deep personal therapy session with Derren is likely to add to her response to his manipulations, or stimulations if you like.

I'm fascinated by Derren's work, he does something absolutely amazing and unexpected, and they he proceeds to explain exactly how he manages to trick the human brain. He's an inteeligent man, and I feel like I've learned to understand humans a lot better as a result of watching his shows. Not only does his content help you understand why humans function the way they do, but it also helps you spot possible manipulation tac tics in certain settings where you may be the target.
I just find it baffling that he so easily convinced an athiest that there was a higher power, just by tapping into her emotions

I think that people need to feel like we are not alone and that there is more to our existence. This video was interesting. It demonstrates how charismatic people can influence our behaviors and how some will follow, believing these people to be more enlightened than us. I also believe that we want to be a part of something, regardless of it being religious - a sense of belonging. Trust can be a real avenue to manipulation. That manipulation doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing, it may simply be guidance into a perceived better direction. Perception. It's how we choose to see our world and those within it.

(A recommendation in a video by TheraminTrees led me here.)
I'm a middle-aged US Southerner and former clergy with all the typical things that come with that (minus the racism stuff you might expect, though). I just woke up a couple of years ago. As sudden and world-shattering as it was for me, seeing religion for what it is was the easy part. It's my personal experiences that have been the hardest to rationalize. The most obvious conclusion, in my mind, was that it all had to have been delusion. A difficult admission, one that I've struggled to come to terms with. I knew that suggestibility and priming had to be at the root of it, but I couldn't quite connect the dots to fathom how it works. Seeing this demonstration was exactly what I needed to fill in the blanks. It's also quite a relief to see that everyone is not only susceptible, but in fact, physiologically inclined, toward such experiences.

I find that mainly religious folk, but can apply to anybody, that they think that they can just pick their beliefs as they wish to believe, for good reasons or bad, in whatever it might be, and I'm here to tell you that you in fact cannot just simply choose to believe in anything, and if you think that I am wrong, well then I challenge you to choose to believe that you can fly, and climb up on the roof of your house and take that leap of faith off of it, much like people do for their God's, and then come back and we can continue our chat from that point in time. The truth is, one is either convinced by the amount of supporting evidence/reason in support of it's claims, or one isn't, period.
I wish more people, especially religious folks, would try and understand that our beliefs actually Do matter, because they inform our actions, and if one holds irrational beliefs, it can and will result in irrational behavior, such as jumping off of the roof of your house, believing that you could fly.

But the fact we ARE prone to psychological manipulation to believe in things irrational shows how nefarious religion truly is. Not to mention, that atheist's behaved better under this idea of something there but religious people actually seem to act worse.

I believe in God completely. For me, there is just no doubt.
I have felt God, even when I was a wee boy. Well before I even knew what religion was.
I see what Mr. Brown is doing and it is admittedly very clever.
    But.
No one taught me my belief. I just remember thinking from a very young age, how small I am. How insignificant I am. But "little old me" could make a difference in this small, wee world we all live in. I am just like all of you. Just a voice in the crowd.
I'm nearly 50 years old now,. I am not a World leader. In the whole scale of things I know am nothing. I just hope that I have made a difference in someone's life.
I became a nurse. during this small life I lived, I watched people die when there was nothing I could do. I have watched people live,, when it felt hopeless
All I can hope for is at least I made a small difference for the better.
I am a nice man. I am polite. I'll hold a door open for you and, yes, sometimes I will get annoyed when you don't say thank you. But Hey! It's really no big deal.. I speak my mind knowing I am not perfect. I get angry at stupid things.
(like, I'm sure all people do) but the God I believe in is here with me. I know My God will be with me when I whisper or scream my last breath on this tiny, wee planet we all share.

This is a very similar process, used in combination with LSD in a psychiatric setting, that was used to give heroin addicts a "God experience", which resulted in cessation with only a 20% recidivism rate. That's a quarter of the recidivism rate of a standard rehab program.
The addicts were given the God experience, and felt that God didn't want them using heroin anymore, and for most it took, allowing them to go through the physical withdrawal with less desire, if any, for what was hours before the centre of their universe.
LSD acts on the brain somewhat like shaking a snowglobe, when the snow settles the previous patterns can be different, so guided therapy can create more productive pathways in the brain, and render old ones ineffective.

Or it could be we are all hard wired to seek God and some higher purpose because it is instilled in us at our birth or even that it may be something we are recalling while here in this avatar with amnesia which we remember slightly as we attempt to make ourselves seek it out as avatars in this horrific low frequency prison dimension of the 5 sense material world and to rise above it and prove ourselves worthy of something incomprehensible. God says, almost as if joking as to just how close we are to him in our true form, "for I knew you looooong before I put you in the womb," kind of like saying, "oh you dont remember while you're down there in that form, but you wouldn't believe just how far we go way back, you and i..." There is no proof that God exists, but there is also no proof he doesnt...of course for the latter that would be a ridiculous statement for anyone to expect to hold any weight really...but there are countless phenomena and experiences which suggest there is something connecting us all in some higher dimension or unseen string trying us together or synchronized thought or relationship and that this is temporary and death not at all the end of consciousness but just one phase of it. And I guess it doesnt hurt that I had an honest to god paranormal experience, a kind which for certain was not just some psychological trick of pareidolia or power of suggestion...at least one as old as time which still has yet to be explained by science even in the least bit or one that has any tentative or beginning explanation for it anyone has come up with just yet. I am glad she took it in stride however, she truly could have had some unintended devastation come from his big reveal at the end and it was something I feel was quite chancey he gambled on....the potential was there to make for a truly cruel experience...
