Woodturning - A Poisonous Crotch?!

  • This is Elder. It was my first experience of turning it, and I don't think I will again... unless the next piece is as dry as a bone. This piece had only been cut down about a year ago, so was still wet. It also really didn't smell great, and on top of that the wood dust is supposedly poisonous.
    Anyway, I'm please with how this piece turned out. I wanted to do another hollow form after my Ash one went viral earlier in the year. Link to that video: • Woodturning - Ash Crot...
    I sanded the piece to 1000 grit and finished it with Danish Oil. As you can see it started to crack throughout the project. I'm going to leave it in a box of shavings for a bit and comeback and give it a few more coats of finish once the wood has settled a bit more.

    My videos are for entertainment purposes only. I am still relatively new to woodturning and some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest. When using any tools or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines.
    Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practise. The gloves I wear are tight fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing.

    And again a nice piece of good work, although you puzzled me during the process, choice of your toys to play with but the result is stunning.
    I wondered myself whether I would have made those repairs, you named the white versus black, but I think I prefer the natural versus, is that a version you could have lived with?
    I like the total project, but the verb you made still keeps me thinking Harry: what would my future usage of this? I don't see it yet, but that could be just my failure seeing the right perspectives!
    Thank you for sharing Harry!

    • @HarrySmithShorts
      @HarrySmithShorts 2 роки тому +2

      Hi Harry many thanks for your comments. It's always really difficult to decide the finishes. I really like natural but also the contrast of different mediums. The type of wood, elder, has knots and hollows which can be problematic and I may try something different next time.
      The project is a hollow form, carved from a single log which was consigned to the burn pile. It's a standalone piece of art, storage vessel or musical instrument 🪵😃👍

      Thanks again for your explanation, it shows again who's the master here. You have to know I make music for over 35 years, and I didn't see, shame on me. But then again, you see it or not in a piece of wood I guess, and there's your superiority!
