  • In this brief video clip the Departures crew and Koryo Tours director Nicholas Bonner visit a secondary school in the DPRK (North Korea) and learn a little bit of Korean. There is also a little learning exchange. See what they encountered and what happens in detention!
    Filmed in 2009 and broadcast first in 2010 this program was part of the third series of the Departures television program in which two Canadians embark on a globe-trotting journey to some of the most interesting places in the world. Their trip to North Korea, accompanied by Koryo Tours' Director Nicholas Bonner was filled with so much broadcastable material that two programs rather than the usual one were produced from the adventure.

    I would LOVE a stay abroad in the DPRK for learning the language and eventually pick up a NORTH KOREAN accent (kinda like you pick a RP or GA accent for English)
    Is there even a chance to learn Korean in the DPRK for a few weeks/months? I don't even mind being under guidance like I was during my tour.

      In Korea there are over nine dialects, North Korean language can be learnt but it's better to learn Seoul dialect to a high level then learn 조선어 North Korean by inferring from others speech, eg 저기요 to get attention in the South is 여기 말입니다 in the north. It's like trying to learn English spoke in Scotland without learning English, I'll have a small glass thanks vs Just a wee one aye

    • @camijacobv
      @camijacobv 7 років тому

      Which are those nine dialects? All I can think about is, as far as the South:
      Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, Gangwon, Jolla, Gyeongsang and Jeju , which is not a dialect, but a language itself.
      My knowledge about Northern regional dialects is very poor, I just know pyeongyang is similar to seoul speech, but has been changed through time (pretty much like seoul saturi as well).
      I'm aware that Japanese and North Korean have a closer pronounciation to Chinese words.
      For example, the word "reason" :
      in SK: 이유 I-yu
      in NK: 리유 Ri-yu
      in Japanese: 理由 Ryu
      in Mandarin: 理由 Lǐyóu
      Similar to the initial N being removed from iotized words like "Yeoja" in SK, "Nyeoja" in NK.

    I think that some things aren't so bad there, there are some good things. but they at least need to get rid of the concentration camps and punish people more reasonably. there was one time where somebody "didn't cry enough" at kim jong il's funeral and went to a concentration camp for half a year. anyway, she looked like she was crying pretty hard. she shouldn't have to cry anyway, but seems pretty severe if she was showing the emotion they wanted everyone to show...

    To be honest, isn't american politics already like a two party dictatorship anyway? The two major parties gives you choices, but most of their policies are getting more and more similar as they are slowly moving towards a police state, and yes you might sometimes get a third party candiate, how likely are they going to win an election? Maybe not since Abraham Lincoln.

    • @simsattackstreams
      @simsattackstreams 3 роки тому

      The US is a two party corporate duopoly. Both parties serve the corporate interests. Both parties serve the war machine. Both parties serve fascistic pushes in politics and police state behaviour
