I’ve said it many times but little companies like Full Moon and the like are the reason why I love and adore low budget filmmaking so much. Their inventive technical aspects, their cheesy special effects, their memorable soundtracks and their silly storylines are truly delightful in every way. Thank you for championing smaller films like these, Cecil. It inspires me to find these films and add them to my ever expanding collection!
Thanks for watching! I grew up loving these smaller films and while yes, I do enjoy larger productions as well, its these kinds of movies I always come back to.
I loved Full Moon movies as a teenager in the ‘90s and “Subspecies” was one of my favorite series by them. (Along with “Puppet Master”). And “Bloodstone: Subspecies 2” was also my favorite in the series.
Cecil, thank you so much for posting this! I remember watching the film on VHS with my older brother years ago. The caged figured breaking off his fingers stuck with us for years but we could never find out what film it was. My cinematic white whale has finally been caught!
Subspecies was one of my favorite 'direct-to-video' franchises from Full Moon. Radu was great villain and I'm so glad that they didn't bring back Stefan and brought Michelle back for the 2 other sequels.
I loved the subspecies series. My favorite part which I am surprised other vampire movies haven't tried is their ability of flight. How they made it look like shadows, so you can travel quickly without endangering the actors. This series is my all time go to for horror that I own it on VHS, DVD, and HD Digital Download.
@@scionixx9568 I'm not disputing that, I'm just saying that Edward from Twilight is the bottom of the barrel. No vampire from any media is worse than the sparkly vampires from Twilight.
Well, Trabant is an East German car, believe or not. And yes, its outer shell was made from Duroplast, a recycled material which led to the myth that it was made of cardboard. The engine is basically a motorcycle engine, two step, as simple as possible. It was pretty common in Communist Romania. Anyway, always funny to see Americans depicting Romania. It is not a fantasy land, you know, it is real :)
Siderite Zackwehdex Best car ever! The sound, the smell. Real eastern comfort. Heating was fine too! Cool in the winter, hot in the summer. The thrill of not seeing through the windshield. It wasnt just a car, it was A Trabant!
Damn, this IS a Trabant. Model 601 station wagon. This car was made in the 1960, but it was not cardboard. Instead the body was mostly of glass fibre yarn, coated with phenol resin and gimped with acrylic yarn. And i shit you not, that was a GERMAN CAR. But to be fair, it was built in East Germany. See, steel and metal were rare at this time and the government wanted to create a car for the common man like the VW Beetle. so they invented a body of glass fibre. It was pretty popular untill 1989 when the Berlin Wall came down.
I loved these Subspecies movies back in the day. And I thought Radu was a great vampire villain character. The actor who played him did a fantastic job. I always thought the little 'subspecies' creatures were really not needed, and were kind of 'tacked on' to the story. They were after all the title of the movie. Thanks for the upload and going thru the first movie!

Actors, directors, producers make their debut in movies like these. Remember Johnny Depp's first movie ever ? That's right, Nightmare on Elm street. Sometimes it opens doors, sometimes it never leads to much more than "B" movies used as a taxe break. Anyhow, Denice Duff is still one of my favorite scream queen. Heck, she made quite a few bad movies, however she made them none the less. I love "B" movies for that reason, you never know what will come afterward... Good or bad, it's better than nothing at all.
A great little movie, but I can never past the fact that Radu is outrageously monstrous looking while all the other vampires just look like ordinary people with the occasional fang.
I've been binge watching these reviews. Absolutely love your content. Keep up the good work. Hope to see your take on plenty more old cheesy horror movies.
Subspecies is a lot of fun and I agree that it's some of Full Moon's best work. I'll take it over a lot of other vampire films and is by far one of the most original.
