Horrible story. A great shame to listen to this as a Latvian that there were plenty of Latvians who participated in pogroms. How evil ideologies can brig out the worst in people, like the communists who came to Latvia in 1940 and killed killed many based on class and those Latvians who took out their rage on Jews in 1941 by killing based on race.
I hope such horrible acts never again take place but seeing the things going on around the world (wars in Ukraine and Israel) makes you wonder where the world is going to.

Cukura un Arāja kungs, those were the leaders there carrying out such crimes. Perhaps many other Latvians as well joined in. And they did these to other Latvians, the latvian jews. They didn't do anything wrong, just belonged to a Jewish community in latvia and practiced certain traditions. Just as a Latvian catholic or Lutheran would do. Or a pagan. Cukura kungs was eventually captured and beaten in Uruguay or Brazil where he lived at the time after the crimes. Rumbula massacre was the biggest in the world after the one in Ukraine. In daugavpils there were more than 70 synagogues and now only a few remain. I've seen that Latvians tend to ignore these tragedies and switch to the so called what about ism. In this case what about the Latvians that got tortured or deported by the soviets? Without even acknowledging these world war two tragedies. I don't know why certain Latvians are like this but at least other Latvians acknowledge these crimes and there are at least two Jewish Museums in riga and elsewhere and all sorts of monuments dedicated to this all over latvia

Who would burn a Synagogue on Independence Day?
