deff not paid enough. 5 years learning, plus further study-diplomas etc. Pharmacy as a profession is not respected enough and the gphc is doing a pretty rubbish job imo.

Continue saving and investing. Also consider buying a house/flat outside London, and commuting in.
Also locum consistently, that can bumb your salary up, add £10k annually to your salary that way.
I didn't enjoy pharmacy; I tried community and hospital. I'm now in health IT. Its crazy the hurdle we jump to become pharmacists and the low pay we are rewarded with.

@@2011lock I was so tired of pharmacy. One day I had had enough. I needed to pivot out of pharmacy and didn't know how. So I thought it's best I get a role within the NHS or health organisation, would utilise my skills and knowledge without me having to be a pharmacist. I read through every job description in NHS jobs, that fit the criteria it had to be a band 6/7 role and non clinical/admin. I'm a technical person. I saw two EPR analysts roles at two different trusts and applied. I had an interview for both, recieved a job offer for the one I really wanted.

    • @cece2086

@@KOREginAPharmacist I really enjoy the role, I love problem solving that is essentially my role as an analyst, I figure out what the issue is and fix it. I enjoy the autonomy of the job, if there is an issue you can fix it. Also, I'll make new builds for the system on request. I feel like I am part of a team and my work impacts the care patients recieve and clinicians ability to provide optimum care to patients. Health IT/digital health is a great sector to get into. I didn't know it existed at uni. Pharmacist seem to really thrive in the roles.

Your vibe is refreshing! It really infuriates me the salary which Pharmacists are paid in the UK compared to US or Canada. It's not even close. Imagine 14pph?!! Band 6 or not, that's not good enough. Pharmacists do an awesome job and deserve to be more valued in the UK than it currently is. Those who work in hospitals as clinical pharmacists are practically used as 'secondary doctors', yet the pay isn't as great as should be. It is an essential profession and the pay should reflect it.
    Well, keep smiling. Keep rising.

For work experience and a part time job, get work as a locum or part time dispenser during your degree. From 1st to 3rd year there may be time for this. Salary depends on where and with which agency. Around £10 at least.Sometimes mileage is paid too.

Locumprime and zenlocum are two really good ones in london. They pay atleast £13 an hour and sometimes can go up to £20! Started doing locum dispensing with them recently.

The thing I think that most people are missing here on comparing salaries of pharmacists is the program requirements and who is "Grandfathered in". If you look at the United States and say look at these averaged 80,000 to 120,000. Its a pretty big difference. However you only used to have to complete a 3 or 4 year program to become a pharmacist. Newer requirements in America say you have to have a Doctorate to be a Pharmacist. However they allow all the pharmacists that are already working to continue without one. "Grandfathering them in so to speak" They will have lower salaries and therefor this is shown in the scale in pay. Also all the specialties that are not considered make a difference. The pharmacist today is much more educated than the one 15 years ago. They now have been in school as long as the Physician. Therefore they need a salary that reflects this. Otherwise they could not pay off the 300,000 debt from all of the schooling. When I research other countries I have noticed different programs that are not as intense in some cases. In some cases they are, but the education in some of these places is free. You have to figure in a lot of factors. I know that in some countries a person with a Doctorate in Pharmacy "pharmD" will graduate debt free and also have special tax credits for healthcare if they are clinical. So to compare pay, you need to look at all the facts and make a decision based on them. I would not want to go to school for 8 years then move to a English speaking country that only requires a 3 year program to work. Because the pay is going to be reflecting these education efforts. This all being said. If the United States found a way to offer free education "Not really free (higher taxes) " then I am sure the pay would go down. Until then you should expect almost all other locations to have lower pay other than Canada and Switzerland. But the swiss may require a second language skill and usually the pay there is related to some kind of clinical or research setting. Not retail.

Thank you very much for your candid salary information. I have been a pharmacist for 24 years and moved to the USA 20 years ago. I did try switching to a finance career, as a trainee chartered accountant with KPMG, but that was so awful (especially the people) I couldn't stand it and then left for the USA.
I will say the salaries here are dropping now but they have been great throughout my career. Unfortunately with the high taxes there it is very difficult to have any job that will pay a good take-home pay such that you can afford a house easily anywhere in London. Though of course there are jobs where the salary is much more than the one you mentioned. And until people realize this and stop going into the profession of pharmacy, and supply meets demand, the salaries will not change much. When I was there working as a locum 20 years ago my locum pay was around £15 an hour. However as you mentioned quite rightly money is not everything and one must achieve a balance in life in all categories as best as possible.

The locum rates are a lot higher than £15 an hour, at least 30-35 in community especially outside of London. Obviously if you work your way up in the nhs salary will be circa £100k. Industry pays well but its not as rewarding and is quite artifical. The best way to progress upwards and be considered for specialist roles with supportive training is to get a job outside London.

Not completely accurate. Most chiefs are band 9s earning over 100k. They carry a high level of accountability so can be quite stressful. Some are also clinical directors in addition to this which means they are responsible for quite a lot. Might seem like a lot of money but they never switch off.

Community is more boring but it pays a lot more, starting salary is about €62k out of college, hospital starts out lower but the overall ceiling at the end of your career is a lot higher as community might max out at like €80-€85k maybe, now if you consider how much money you're missing out on in your first several years of working hospital compared to what you're getting working in community starting off its huge and really adds up. If you go locuming you'll make €44 to €50 per hour. The taxes are less in the UK compared to here though.
