If you could find a cemetery in WV. Its called the McAvoy cemetery. I would love to see it. My aunt told me about it. I will never get to see it as i am disabled and don't drive anymore. If you do find it please let me know. I am the only one left thank you so much
Very intriguing! I bet it was the cemetery for the local mountain folks. Although I don't know your exact location, so I can't really tell you anything I've asked my husband as he grew up in Southeastern KY. He was a mountain grown boy. His entire family lived in a hollar. His Grandpa and Grandma and their 7 children and their families lived in close proximity. My husband walked down the hill from their house to his Grandma's to catch the bus for school. He says a lot of families or a few families had burial plots not far from their homes. Private family or community cemeteries. A lot of folks in one area are related somehow or married into the family. It's all very different than Midwestern culture, for sure!
When the federal government created the park, it probably took over old churches or family graveyards. After a hundred years, family moves away, and forget where the great grandparents are buried.
I know exactly where that is. I live aprox. 3 hours northeast of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. We go out very often to that area. Are you going to Cades Cove? If you run the loop, you will come upon an old white country church. There is a very interesting graveyard there. Lots of little children are buried in it. Very old graves. It is very sobering to see how many children died back in that time. Very sad. If you need any suggestions on what to see, where to eat, or where to stay out there just let me know. I'm sort of an expert..lol.
Thanks Cathy! We did Cades Cove this morning and it took about 4 hours to get through. I did see the other cemetery but didn’t get to explore it. We will be back in the area again, it’s beautiful!
Cades Cove is beautiful as I live here but PLEASE check for times when tourism isn't peak. There's nothing more sacred to savor but over tourism has ruined the experience. Anyone reading, if you can come during January, first half of May, all of April and any time in August, you'll see the true Cades Cove. Visit in summer or October and you'll likely take 3 hours just to make that circle and it's just looking at traffic.
Also, if you ever return, look up Sevier County Heritage Museum in nearby Sevierville. It's small but they have some amazing info about the county and history of this area.

The old Friendship Church cemetery is located between two runways at the Baltimore airport, it of course long predated the airport.
One of the graves , had some flowers on it. They look like that they were recently.

There's 4 churches with cemeteries in Cades Cove. I photographed them during my last visit. :)
