Tell me about it. I was playing it on an 8086 PC with CGA 4 colors and *bleeps* from the PC built-in speaker....Then I Bought the Amiga, and lost myself in front of the 1084 monitor....Problem is, I still do, lol
Yes, me too and i love that "bleeps", the music sound is longer that special speakers. Even the sound with Prince of Persia 1 . CGa and that purple screen , still miss it.
Yet somehow the C64 version sounds better and more impressive considering the hardware :P. THis sounds Clinical, the C64 sounds like a roaring beast :P.
Thanx, being french I didn't know it came from aliens until I watched the english version, and then unable to remember where I heard Bill Paxton... Test drive 2, thanx you bro'
The best thing about this game is the intro music. Remember it like it was yesterday, when I would fire this up on the Amiga just to hear the music. :-)
My dad got me an Amiga 500 when I was 8 or so. I distinctly remember both us being amazed by the intro. We were used to Apple II style music and graphics.
I used to think I was hot stuff with TD on my 286 w/ awesome CGA graphics...then my friend showed me TD2 on his Amiga. That shut me up for a long time. The Amiga freaking rocked!
"Listen to that slappin' stereo intro and feel the envy!". That's what I thought back when I worked in a computer store. No matter what demo was running on Apple or Windows, customers would always gravitate to see/hear this incredible 'thing' called the Amiga. Looking back I think mostly the elite, aficionados or computer enthusiasts etc. bought the Amiga - not so much the 'everyday guy' ( at least where I was). Much like today, when a customer invested in an Apple etc. product, they just stuck with it. Really impressive at the time though.
It took more than two decades for me to notice that the turbo-boost gauge, fuel, oil pressure etc actually worked. Nice attention to detail for such an old game =)
Much of 1991 was squandered by me playing this game!! This is really, really classic! So what it's not the fancy ass pseudo realistic games of today, this has got an innocence and honesty that they don't have! Even touches of humour in it!
I'm able to say I was paying attention to that cumbersome little detail at the time also. Although I cannot I used to worry about things like that. In a game such as this, where the hell you'd find the time to do that anyway.
@Jimbo8012 It's hard to understand that this game is 20 years old because time is just a number. The fact of the matter is that Amiga is still the same, Test Drive 2 is still the same. Time is just a number.
interesting to see them use the pre-88 Crown Vic--that was incredibly accurate--as the cop car. The '88 had taller taillights and a different grille. Not bad and very realistic!
if you think about the amiga 500 had 7mhz ! cpu speed, 5fps are really good for that maschine these days. i really liked to play with the amiga, and even nowadays i am booting up my amiga 1200 for a round retro gaming ;)
trying to decide which port to look for on ebay. this blows both the pc, and suprisingly the snes version (which is from '92) out of the water! that intro music is amazing
The end sequence voice sample "GAME OVER, MAN!" was Bill Paxton's voice (R.I.P.) taken from "Aliens" (1986). Just check. I guess they didn't pay any royalties.
Awesome game, I remember it well. When I switched from Amiga to PC around 1996, one of the first games I played was Need for Speed. It was like Test Drive on steroids :-) NFS owes a lot to this classic.
I loved the first test drive so much. I bought this and I did like it but I was pissed only 2 cars if you wanted more buy and expansion pack. It was my first introduction to screwing the user over.
I remember this one. The scene of much wailing and gnashing BG of teeth, depending on whether you won. I remember the Ferrari had more power, whereas the Porsche was supposed to have been more user friendly
In real life the 959 is both faster and way easier to drive than the F40, but also less fun according to people who have driven both. I played the hell out of this game as a kid, almost always chose the F49 simply because it's by far the cooler looking of the 2 cars.
In my opinion, games like this age better than early examples of hardware rendering, like Test Drive 3. If you sped up the gameplay just a little bit, it would actually look pretty good, while Test Drive Three, with its wireframes, looks like an early assignment for a computer animation class.
Compared to the original that ends with a note telling you to keep your car, you always get busted when you finish all the stages (which will REALLY be creepy like CarnEvil if you ask me!)!
I always thought it was amusing in basically any test drive game, from the original to Unlimited, that a Ford LTD has no problem running down an F40. Must be the LTD from MIB.
the fake 3D effect in this game looks amazing, even by today's standards. Even if it don't run too smooth the depth is great, and the road angle changes depending on how much you're turning; Most fake-3D racers like this look convincing and playable, but I've never played one that felt this correctly 3D
Hard to believe that this game is 20 years old! Only seems like yesterday since I was playing this in earnest! It was a fantastic game at the time. Nonetheless, it's dated rather badly and it demonstrates how far games have developed in this time period. For example, how many frames per second is this running? 5? It's very sluggish now. Yet, it was the precursor of games like Need for Speed and therefore deserves massive amounts of credit.
People these days have no idea how good that looked, when you came from a C64 !
Tell me about it. I was playing it on an 8086 PC with CGA 4 colors and *bleeps* from the PC built-in speaker....Then I Bought the Amiga, and lost myself in front of the 1084 monitor....Problem is, I still do, lol
+Alex Reality I was so proud to have an Amiga 500. The graphics were amazing compared to anything at that time.
@Trondyard dos version was technical better, but the controls of both Commodore version was definitely better
21:19 The voice you hear at the end of the game saying 'Game Over, man!' is Bill Paxton, taken from the movie 'Aliens'.
Thanx, being french I didn't know it came from aliens until I watched the english version, and then unable to remember where I heard Bill Paxton... Test drive 2, thanx you bro'
also used in polish game on amiga, called "miecze valdgira" when you've lost all lives
@@airjersey89 It was also used on the PC DOS game "Major Stryker" by Apogee Software when you've lost all lives.
Thank you!
I thought why that sounded so familiar, now I know :)
Epic music, epic graphics, epic game! This is part of my childhood!
The best thing about this game is the intro music. Remember it like it was yesterday, when I would fire this up on the Amiga just to hear the music. :-)
atari st intro was better
The Intro song is a killer! Such a sick song! Accolade Presents!
I played this on a DOS PC and I still loved it. I didn't know any better at the time...
Loved it big time back then!
I find the Female " Accolade Presents " Sample Very Sexy !!!
The intro song brings back great childhood memories.
My dad got me an Amiga 500 when I was 8 or so. I distinctly remember both us being amazed by the intro. We were used to Apple II style music and graphics.
that intro music still gives me goosebumps
This is such a nostalgia kick! 🥺
I used to think I was hot stuff with TD on my 286 w/ awesome CGA graphics...then my friend showed me TD2 on his Amiga. That shut me up for a long time. The Amiga freaking rocked!
Need For Speed's mother.
In fact: Need For Speed, the origins!!
both Test drive as Need For Speed were created for the same developer
Always found it amusing that the game ends with your character actually getting arrested.
But if You drive slowly - You are free :P
8:25 Cop stops you at the gas station
Game logic: a clean run

This game was a thrill to play back in the days. Time has moved on.
Loved the ending... that "Game Over Man!" sound sample was taken from the movie "Aliens" (21:19)
Interesting. I clearly remember that sample and always linked it to TestDrive2.
Hardest thing about owning an Amiga, finding a joystick that actually worked.
Back in the day i regularly recorded my favorite amiga game tune on a music tape. Of course also the one from Test Drive II.
This was and stil is some powerful intro. This game awed me in such a way that I saw the Amiga as out of this world technology.
Much of 1991 was squandered by me playing this game!! This is really, really classic! So what it's not the fancy ass pseudo realistic games of today, this has got an innocence and honesty that they don't have! Even touches of humour in it!
one of my favourite games on amiga and the soundtrack is just freezing cool :D
brrrrr
As a kid. I didn’t think graphics could get better. This was photo realistic.
I had this game on a regular Amiga 500 with 1mb memory. Performed exactly like this.
Same Story Here !!!
Oh the memories :)
I miei primi 18 anni..Che emozione rivedere questi giochi indimenticabili della commodore Amiga...😢💖
This brings back memories,i played this on my friends amiga back in the days.
One of the best games I played as a kid, the best part of going to my uncles house. Last year I even made a remix to the into music!
The engine sound of the Ferrari still sound good and even has some affinity to real ferrari engine sounds :) Pretty good for such an old game.
Way better than the DOS version that I loved as a kid!
Loved playing it in 1987. A great game that time on the A500. My fav car was the Porsche 959.
I'm able to say I was paying attention to that cumbersome little detail at the time also. Although I cannot I used to worry about things like that. In a game such as this, where the hell you'd find the time to do that anyway.
Funny.. i remember this game to be smooth as hell. The sense of speed was amazing at the time.
Sorry, but even as 6 yo kid I knew that this 300 kph felt more like 30.
Laughs on Porsche March Indy at max speed in "Stunts (1990)"
Thanks for posting. Amazing to see it again and be taken back to a more innocent time!
Wow this brings back memories. The best music ever.
Still get goosebumps
HO LY CRAP!!!!! the very first videogame i played back on the amiga!!!!!
C64 and amiga 500 are the legends of the pc world.both of them were meanings of my childhoold
Love this game - played it on my Amiga 500 ( still living and working my baby *G* ) - thx ! remind me on good times when computer was fun....
Wait in the end you actually hear Bill Paxton's "game over man" audio clip from Aliens
Its not good to get older. But its good to drive the real cars now xD
@Jimbo8012 It's hard to understand that this game is 20 years old because time is just a number. The fact of the matter is that Amiga is still the same, Test Drive 2 is still the same. Time is just a number.
Man, the Amiga version of the theme sounds awesome, even the Atari ST nailed it as well.
interesting to see them use the pre-88 Crown Vic--that was incredibly accurate--as the cop car. The '88 had taller taillights and a different grille. Not bad and very realistic!
And '89 got the horizontal chrome strip on the c-pillar.
Amazing! I'm happy to be part of the story of this game with my remastering of Test Drive Unlimited!
great time
this game and music are incredible !
if you think about the amiga 500 had 7mhz ! cpu speed, 5fps are really good for that maschine these days.
i really liked to play with the amiga, and even nowadays i am booting up my amiga 1200 for a round retro gaming ;)
DOC DISTORTION cool
trying to decide which port to look for on ebay. this blows both the pc, and suprisingly the snes version (which is from '92) out of the water! that intro music is amazing
Ahh the very nostalgic intro tune :D
Great game.
I believe this was the first computer game I've ever seen, on my dad's computer in the beginning of 90's.
one of the greatest, funniest and hard games that i loved to play!!
Loved the music in this game
This guy really can drive I would have had at least 3 crashes by now miss this game.sooooo much
Ahhh you got the arrested ending.
I always liked the one where she smiles back.
Hours and hours playing this game , I use to love the C64 version of TD , but when i bought my A500 , this was the game !!!
Is this game actually 'simulating' the turbo lag in the F40 by having the car accelerate quicker at higher RPM? That's pretty cool.
Ale w to grałem dniami... to były czasy.... łezka się w oku kręci
The theme for this game is unreal, holy shit.
childhood memories..used to play this listening to alice cooper's trash album..magnificent times!
I am missing those days so muchh!
The end sequence voice sample "GAME OVER, MAN!" was Bill Paxton's voice (R.I.P.) taken from "Aliens" (1986). Just check.
I guess they didn't pay any royalties.
Thanks for the sharing. Best BGM in Amiga!
I had this on my a500 and it was my most played game loved it! Also lotus challenge 2 too
Awesome game, I remember it well.
When I switched from Amiga to PC around 1996, one of the first games I played was Need for Speed. It was like Test Drive on steroids :-)
NFS owes a lot to this classic.
Because both games were developed by the same developer ^.^
So when is the *first* Test Drive going to be longplayed here?
Killer intro
Wasn't the Amiga version the only one to use sampled sounds?
Back when intros were serious business
Best comment 😁
What, it really ended like this? I always thought I screwed up in some way or other.
what a game. this was state of the art back in the day,. really feel like you was driving at 100mph...
I loved the first test drive so much. I bought this and I did like it but I was pissed only 2 cars if you wanted more buy and expansion pack. It was my first introduction to screwing the user over.

DAS waren noch Zeiten! :D
16-bit era was the best
Did anyone notice that the "Map" telling you where your opponent or police is, is at the top of the screen?
Great game. I used to play this on my Apple IIgs.
@Jimbo8012 Most moderm games on the actual machine are eactly 5FPS. so nothing changed, static screen in colorful magazine rules.
Auto shift? Whats going on there?!
Best Amiga Racing Game!
Used to boot up this game just for the intro
This Game Graphic is from !1989! . 35 years ago. And it still Looks good 👍
I trained it with Actionreplay MKIII :)
In my opinion, games like this age better than early examples of hardware rendering, like Test Drive 3. If you sped up the gameplay just a little bit, it would actually look pretty good, while Test Drive Three, with its wireframes, looks like an early assignment for a computer animation class.

if you still got your amiga and this game, try pressing "aerf" at the start and you will accelerate way faster. "gasst" skips the lvl
Cool :) I just know the aerf Cheat.
the fake 3D effect in this game looks amazing, even by today's standards. Even if it don't run too smooth the depth is great, and the road angle changes depending on how much you're turning; Most fake-3D racers like this look convincing and playable, but I've never played one that felt this correctly 3D
Oh man I miss my Amiga 1000....
Wrong pixel aspect ratio, by the way. This game was designed in Canada, therefore, every pixel should be squished to a 5:6 pixel aspect ratio.
Looks like the Mega Drive version of this game was a straight Amiga port! Looks pretty much identical.
No way was the Mega Drive version as good as this. Go look up some videos of it.
Hard to believe that this game is 20 years old! Only seems like yesterday since I was playing this in earnest! It was a fantastic game at the time.

ahh memories............ brilliant
What version is this ?
I never did make it past track 4. Heck, it was rare to get past track 2.
Man, that sound
That audio clip at 21:20 blatantly stolen from Aliens. Ah, the memories :)
This game has a world high score contest website. Do a search on google on geocitiesdude2/td2. I'm still 2nd on the European Challenge B)
It's too bad the Lotus Turbo Challenge II programmers didn't get to put this together for the Amiga. Lotus II does up to 30fps.
"GAME OVER MAN!"
always top music on accolade games
