    Tazawa tanks, I love brackish fish as well. You made an interesting statement about not needing to keep salinity stable. I have always wondered, since salinity in brackish environments changes with the seasons, if the truly brackish fish wouldn’t live longer if we changed up there salinity from time to time. More freshwater during the rainy seasons and more salt during the dry. We tend to think that stability is less stressful, however, for brackish fish maybe stable is harder for their bodies to maintain long term? An experiment worth trying with the true brackish species.

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  3 роки тому +2

      I agree. In fact, the salinty can change on a daily or weekly basis in brackish environments due to the tides, rain, etc.

    Hello,
    I recently set up two brackish tanks, a 10g and a 55g. The ten has two mollies and three guppies.
    Cycling normally.
    The 55g consists of plants, 4 Sailfin Mollies and a Knight Goby, along with a couple Nerites.
    This tank is consistently >.50ppm NH3, .25 Nitrite and ambient 5ppm nitrates, all × one week.
    Quite a few plants.
    I also purchased an API Master freshwater test kit.
    My question is
    A) Is this product affected by brackish conditions?
    B) Is it possible I have ambient nitrites in my source as well? I live in a dairy state.

    It’s extremely refreshing to see a popular fish UA-camr that delves into our brackish water world. A few points about the video. I think it’s important to distinguish between the true brackish fish and those fish that merely find their way into estuaries and mangroves during the rainy season. The later type are really freshwater fish that may live In brackish water in an aquarium setting. However, the salt level and the changes in salinity are much more of a problem with these types of fish. So fishes like the wrestling halfbeaks, the needle nose or rocket gar, guppies, horse faced loaches and most bumblebee gobies are all fish that do not tolerate a wide range of salinity and really only thrive at a SG of 1.005. Other fish like the Monos (Atlantic and Pacific), Scats, Archerfish, Mollies, and most pufferfish will tolerate a wide range of salinity from freshwater 1.000 to full marine at 1.025. I personally collect most of my brackish fish down here in South Florida and they can thrive at just about any level from full fresh to marine. Thanks the the great vids, as always. Cheers. 👌🏽

      Xavier, right on man. Too many of the “brackish” fish being sold in the hobby are doomed to fail in a permanent brackish set up. Trying to source long term residents (that aren’t monster fish ) is actually difficult and limiting. The best thing to do I pick one fish and study to see what its long term requirements are. If you can then find tank makes that can live the same then good. I do love brackish though. I have three set ups right now.

    Are pea puffers also a brackish water fish? I have a tank with a knite goby, 4 pea puffers and I put my excess female pregnant guppies in there because I have way too many. I guess i could transition it to a brackish tank? I also put my pond snails from my betta tank. Will the salinity kill the snails? My puffers prefer to eat live snails and live blood worms. I have Java ferns and water sprite in there - it’s a dirt capped with sand tank - will my plants die? Thank you for all you do and teach me!❤

      Backgrounds provide extra privacy to existing hides and caves by providing a place to back up to.

    Tazawa- if you haven't already, I highly recommend checking out @ultimatedreamfish on Instagram. The newest contributor there is Jeff Rapps, former owner of Tangled up in cichlids. There are several guys contributing there now, and one of the original guys has an amazing collection of rare brackish fish! Stuff I never knew existed. For anyone else who reads this there are all sorts of other fish there as well, including a ton of beautiful US native fish I had never seen.

    My bumblebee gobies won’t eat anything apart from frozen bloodworm it has to be bright red otherwise they won’t eat it. I even have to target feed them sometimes.

      Mine did great on live or frozen Brine Shrimp, Tubifex, Blackworms and frozen Bloodworms.
      I kept them in fresh, but they lit up when I put them into brackish.
      They did great but were a little nippy.

    So do you use a test kit for fresh or salt water with brackish tanks?

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  4 роки тому

      Fresh. The salinity is low relative to saltwater.

      I still get false positive NH3 results on my two brackish tanks.
      However, the results more resemble negative on the salt chart.
      I calibrated on both pure distilled water and brackish distilled water.
      I got a negative (freshwater chart) on the plain distilled, but the result on the distilled+brackish looked more like 0.25ppm on the freshwater chart, negative on the saltwater chart.
      I use the API freshwater master test kit.
      I even talked c the people at API and they also said to go by the freshwater chart with a brackish tank.
      Both tanks are fully cycled.
      NH3 "negative" NO2 negative, NO3 around 30pm in my 10g, 0 in my 55g because of live sand.

    Do you only use rodi water and add the fritz? This is why I'm stopping my marine and considering brackish. I travel too much and can't trust someone to do top offs and mix salt for me. I'm without an rodi unit to make my own and lug it back and forth from the petstore, so using tap water would be ideal for me. Thank you for your time, sir

      I use tap water and dechlorinate it with Fritz Complete and add the Fritz salt.

      Actually, the puffer gets chased by the skippers. The fin nips are from the other mudskippers.

    I freaking love Molly’s females more because. I had this wonder full dust gold molly I named her princess because she acted like the queen of the tank. She was so sweet and had the most personality of any fish I had before.
    We have a male red wag sword tail that somehow got her pregnant which I’m very confused by. But I never realized she was until it was to late. Even though I could blame my self I had these 3 yellow labs in the same tank as her with a chocolate chiclid. When she finish giving birth they all had a feast and when I realized it it was to late all the baby’s were gone.
    About a month later we got her a panda molly originally named prince,the sudden name change is because he killed the other female molly that was in the same bag as him. So we named him syco. Anyways the second we added syco to the tank he went right to her and breed with her instantly. But this is when everything went wrong.
    We originally suffered with ich in our tank. Which is why 2 of our yellow labs died and our ballon mollies. So when she was about 3 weeks in to her pregnancy she got it. I just shrugged it off at first but then it got worst. So we quickly went to the pet store the next day and got the medicine. But when we put it in it was to late. She tucked her self under a rock and passed away.
    But happy part first. She had 5 baby’s the day before and um 😐 the alll got eaten by accident by our common Pleco. They were hiding under her food and well 💀.
    And that’s the story about my favorite molly I have ever kept and how it changed me as a fish keeper.

      For some reason mollies are especially susceptible to ich. They used to get it in my tank a lot too.

      @TazawaTanks  4 роки тому +1

      Make sure to learn about the species you plan on keeping, including water parameters and compatibility with other fish. Also, make sure to have some snails on hand to feed a few times per week (or other hard foods, depending on the species).

    What makes a Figure 8 Puffer suddenly start swimming in circles, running into things, half inflating and generally acting drunk??
    Then he'll snap out of it as suddenly as it comes on.
    Also, he's in a well furnished and planted tank, but he paces constantly.
    Have you experienced this odd behavior in your pufferfish?

      Well, it's been a while now without any further seizures or whatever. He is eating well but doing a lot of pacing. I try to keep ghost shrimp and snails on hand to keep life interesting for him.
      The tank is really busy and I'm contemplating paring down on a lot of Livebearers, esp guppies and mollies. They aren't aggressive, just dirty. I'd like to keep it to more unusual fish like Indian Glassfish, my Knight Goby and of course "Pink", my puffer.
