    I tried capturing the calmness with my dog, but the thing is that if I so much as hold a treat my dog will go bouncy and excited. So I cannot capture the calmness while he's awake. I had to reward him when he fell asleep.
    Guess what happened?!
    He started recognizing this pattern of rewards. So he lay down, put his head down on the floor, he started SNORING and then he lifted his head to get my attention so that he could get his reward. This taught my dog to fake snore and fake sleep!! He is too funny!! 😂😂

    Hi Emily, I love all your videos, I think you have the most precise, understandable and detailed training tips on UA-cam! (And I watch a lot of UA-cam dog training channels!) I would especially like to thank you for this video and the others linked to it as I realised that so much of my dog's issue with learning is because she is over-aroused by the food. She is very bright and loves training but it can often take her so much longer than it should because she's not even thinking straight (even if it's her own boring kibble). I will try these tips out and let you know how we get on :)

We have tried exercise and no exercise before the anticipated event and it still happens. Fortunately the bouts now don't last very long, so we can manage them, but it is an issue for new owners as most other trainers just suggest tiring out the dog which can have the opposite effect.

    My rescue puppy (14 weeks old) is very excited by food - constantly scavenging around kitchen for scraps etc. even after he has eaten. One thing I was wondering though - we were advised to do training sessions with him at mealtimes, so basically gets his daily food allowance hand fed to him via basic obedience training or when training out on walks. But he is in quite an aroused state for these training session as a result - he doesn’t vocalise but he will do things like cycle through different behaviours trying to guess which one I want him to do 😂 and he runs / dives into his crate as thats where we feed him / train him. Everything is done very quickly and excitedly because he wants the food so badly!
    After watching all your videos around calmness, I’m wondering if this is something we should maybe stop doing? He loves food so much, I would imagine he would be just as excited about his kibble even if it wasn’t mealtime though. Thanks in advance!

    This is exactly the information I need. I have a food-obsessed golden retriever from China who literally jumps out of his skin with excitement at mealtime. I do feed him frozen from a slow feeder bowl. He will sit and wait until I say "Okay" for his food, but meal prep time is frustrating (for me) as he has an obnoxious, screeching demand bark and will use it repeatedly and obsessively until he gets the food. As I'm walking him into the room where he's fed, he is on 2 feet jumping and spinning scratching walls, etc. He can't contain his excitement. Would this work for something like that? I got him in June 2019. He was super shut down for the first month but has done really well since.

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  4 роки тому +8

      I suggest getting a bunch of bowls and prepping the food when someone walks him. Then whenever he is calm and relaxing in the house get the bowl out and put it in front of him. I wouldnt give a release cue because that can build anticipation. You could say something in a very calm relaxing voice I suppose but not "Ok!" Another thing you can do is while hes eating low value food, walk back and forth and drop a high value treat next to the bowl. This can help slow down the eating as teh dog will hopefully stop eating to look at you for the treat. And then hopefully not eat as frantically

    Thank you for this video, Emily! I adopted an older Border Collie while here in Kuwait and have been trying to work on her food arousal issues. She was living on the streets for a while before she was rescued, so obviously food is a major reinforcer for her. She is mellow the majority of the time but becomes hypervigilant even if there was food present previously in/near the room and she smells it. I hand-feed her frequently throughout the day so she knows where her meals come from and roughly when she'll be fed, but it doesn't seem to be helping as much as I thought it would. I'm hesitant to try using a calm settle technique as I fear this could make her more worked up about random food delivery. She can be taking a nap and will get so worked up after a reward or two that she starts crying. Do you have any tips that may be able to help? Brilliant videos, as always!

    My dogs from a kill shelter from a third world country and was severely malnourished and always had to "fight" for food.
    He can sit down and wait to get his treat or food but I have to use a slow feeder because he will throw up his food if he eats from a normal bowl. No matter how long I wait before giving him food he doesnt calm down.
    It even affects my other dog who actually had a hard time being motivated to eat. I feed them in seperated rooms and they NEVER leave food. He still checks EVERYTIME if the other one left something.
    Learning new behaviours is impossible with food and as soon as we see my friend who uses cheese and sausages as treats when we walk I get COMPLETELY ignored since I don't use high value treats or any treats at all since his behaviour just gets more and more anxious.

      @@danielleroberson8735 Low value may be something the pup desires less, but still desires: so my dogs love cheese so for low value I may use a frozen pea, which they like but not love and I make sure they get their veggies and not too many smell chesse farts.. I try tiny things as they can fill fast when we train. When they have a good training lesson I use a jackpot or handful at the end so they know eventually after quite some time that they need to listen and keep doing until it is time for the grand finale of treats and I always place it down so they stay in one relative spot while eating it up without grabbing anyone elses food, I have 2 dogs currently. It does take lots of time especially with puppies but think small and lots of success is the goal. After quite some time then combine some tricks, so maybe sit for treat, then sit and lay down for the treat. It helps to get them to focus in different directions with their body. Emily has wonderful videos on how to get your dog to hold and wait, try some of them, and love the puppy they do grow up too too fast. Emily has good lessons, and I rewatch her videos they help me with the dogs and people-lol. I have decades of training dogs but since I am training my service dog and wanted more positive and detailed training I found with Emily and some others like her that this positive approach gives far better and more reliable results. It is great the pup is food oriented so you can transfer that skill to use in training and also try toys. Again check out Emily's other videos. Prayers to you and your pup with lots of blessings.

    lately I would hold a couch pillow upright between her and the food so she can't see it, she is a bit more relaxed, however she still takes the food and it's like she wants to eat it fast, we say "chew your food" etc and she is pretty ok with chewing but there are the times she chews once then swallows.
    when we got her she was a year old and it was our first dog so we really didn't know much about training she's now 9 and an old granny sometimes it's kinda a bit harder. but she's still like a young dog most of the time

      It makes it hard that she has only 16 kibbles to eat... one exercise I plan to make into a video on yt, but havent had time. Is that you give them their food, then walk past and drop higher value treats next to the bowl, so they stop eating to get the treat you are dropping, and after a few repetitions stop eating the food to look at you approach with the higher value treat. • @kikopup
      @kikopup  5 років тому +6

      I agree dogs can get stressed and anxious about any reinforcer that is "withheld". The trainer can cause frustration, anxiety, and even aggression by not breaking up training steps small enough as well as the criteria being too high. Yes, I believe with all reinforcers the animal should be conditioned so that they are not feeling over aroused and anxious by just the presence of it. I also think its important to learn to read dogs for signs of stress and anxiety. I feel like some trainers actually think their dog is having "fun" when they are acting over aroused whining and barking at them, when to me the dog looks frustrated and anxious.

I learned the hard way that our dog, Pugs, who is 14+ years old, loves to do this (we think that he may have some problems with his eyesight since he can't see very well in the dark and often looks in the wrong direction when we call to him).
    I figured out that I have to feed Pugs like a horse--placing a treat in the middle of my palm and then putting it at eye level. When I do this, he is able to eat the treat and I don't get my finger chomped 🐶🤣

      Have you tried training after the meals? Also, the "calm settle" video might prove valuable for you.

    Would love to learn how to teach my dog to eat slowly if there’s already a video! 😊

      I havent made a video on this yet, but what I do is walk past the bowl with higher value treats and drop one outside the bowl, after some repetition of doing this during meals the dog starts to look up from the bowl to get the higher value treat, what this can do is reduce the excitement and speed of eating and sometimes just a few training sessions can get rid of the problem of wolfing it down.

    “When you see your dog is relaxed” what if my puppy is never relaxed. I have never seen her relaxed outside of her crate…. Ever 😢

      Sometimes they can learn that the crate is for sleeping and being out is about being up. I suggest attach the crate to a pen when you are not watching her that way she learns to play and then relax after not just play constantly when let out of a crate.

    What if your dog is never calm?

    My dog would just jump of the wall after capturing the calmness. I'm just a possible walking food dispenser, even if I don't give in and reward bad behavior he cannot correlate reward for calmness.

      Tug is also a rescue that had been trained using Cesar Milan methods before I got him and had chronic pain so would become aggressive. But yeah his over excitement and lack of impulse control was something we did brush up training sessions on for life. Now he’s 14

    Respectfully a different perspective - Feeding dogs "treats" like this person advocates is a big mistake from my perspective. It gets the dog constantly looking for treats, thinking of you as a "treat dispenser". A dog should feel about its owner as it does an alpha dog in a natural pack situation, there should be respect first and of course love. Snuffling around for treats all the time is a distraction from lessons the dog should be learning. A kind word should be all the treat your dog needs. Then the dog will be working for you our of respect, love and hopefully a love of doing a good job, rather than for a bribe.

      Well, one could argue making the dog work for his food is more in line with that theory than presenting large bowls of food for him for doing nothing. The reason I train as I do is due to the science of learning, you don’t have to use food you could make anything a reinforcer like access to other dogs or people or the environment. Food is convenient especially for things like physical therapy fitness and learning complex behaviors. Food and toys are used to teach amazing behaviors such as teaching bomb detection dogs.
