Children's Garden at the Royal Bath & West Show

- I visited Lara Honnor at her Skool Beanz garden at the Royal Bath & West show ground. Lara and all her volunteers have worked so hard over the past week, with a tiny budget.
We explore their creation of a wonderful colourful and plant filled garden, for children and parents to enjoy over the course of the show.
The Royal Bath and West Show runs from 30th May to 1st June. Tickets are available via the website www.bathandwestshowground.com/...
Included in the garden are all the elements Lara finds important to really engage with children.

Lara's permanent Skool Beanz garden is at an allotment site in Chilthorne Domer just on the outskirts of Yeovil. She runs a children's gardening club and offers adult courses for those who would like to create their own children's garden. Her website is www.skoolbeanzcic.com

What a delightful part of my life - this few minutes was joyful, enlightening, and hopeful. The kids will be changed after playing in it. After all, playing is wonderful education, too.

We visited today and my girls absolutely loved taking part in the activities and they came back inspired with lots of ideas. I can’t recommend it enough if you live near and can visit over the weekend.

This by far THE MOST inspirational video I have seen on how to make your garden extra exciting for children! ❤ Also an incredibly cool solution for a water tank for someone who doesn't want it to be an ugly feature of a garden and has kids as well! Now I badly need more videos from Lara on how all of this could be done with less blood. Video for busy parents with kids ;-)

Pleasant chat and great little teaching garden. I’d make one suggestion, to use only natural nontoxic paints and materials around food plants. It’s not gona be as bright and long lasting, but I actually like pastels. They have a nice calmness to it.
I think the cuprinol garden paints mentioned in the video are water based and non toxic.
@@ricos1497 Ok. I had no idea what kind of paint was used, but I just wanted to mention as a caution.
@@iteerrex8166 she mentioned cuprinol in the video, so I assume that it's their garden shades range, which appear to be water based and non toxic. Difficult to tell these days though, you're right to be cautious!
What happens to all the veg after the show? Does it get moved again?
Yes we are going to take it back to the Skool Beanz allotment and plant it ☺️
The ability to grow a garden-
A much more useful skill than an ability to solve quadratic equations 😆

My beetroot has started to bolt already! The variety is golden burpees, multi sown in February and planted out in March. I've never seen this before, normally they flower on year two if left in the ground. And all crimson broad beans not making pods but superaguadulce all are? Unusual year with all this rain... Any ideas?
This is why, for early sowing, I recommend Boltardy or there's another new one called Boston. I don't know what's going on with your crimson beans!

I thought it would be a garden designed and built by children. Were children involved at any point?
Absolutely, they helped paint + decorate the signs + planters + scarecrow. This is a learning garden for children, functional as well as fun and beautiful. All the elements in this garden have been taken from our original Skool Beanz allotment so we know how much the children love them ☺️

WE’VE BEEN TRYING TO CONVINCE OUR CHILDREN THAT THEY DON’T REALLY NEED A PUPPY FOR THEIR BIRTHDAY !!!! WE TELL THEM THAT THEY ALREADY HAVE THE GREATEST LIVING ORGANISM A KID COULD EVER WANT !!!! A BEAUTIFUL, ABUNDANTLY FERTILE, UNDUG PATCH OF SOIL RIGHT IN THEIR BACK YARD !!!!! THEY’RE NOT GOING FOR IT THOUGH !!!!! 😒😞
My advice is get them that puppy. Then they will spend even more time in the garden playing with it 😊
