Thanks for checking out a new episode of "What Happened To?" in which we will explore the Wild Arms series! Have you ever played it before? What are your thoughts on it? Let's explore its history and see why we haven't heard from it in awhile!
You should make a video on the mother 1 remake hack it’s been in development for more than a decade. Anyways keep up the great work been loving ur videos?
I think a big detail you missed out on is Sony itself. While media vision was the developer of the series, they got major support for Japan Studio, Sony's first party development studio who's developed stuff like Shadows of the Colossus and supported literal hundreds of other games over the decades.
Unfortunately, this studio was divested in 2020, scattered to other places within Sony Computer Entertainment as part of a re-organization. This seems to have been a long time coming between the major, major success of Sony's western studios and the relatively lackluster sales of non-Gran Turismo Japanese games. The Last Guardian seemed to have been the big game that started this shift.
Now, this doesn't delete any hope of a new Wild Arms, but it definitely hurts chances, since Sony itself doesn't seem too interested in anything within the genre as of now.
Wild Arms 4 killed the series as it is it's black sheep. The semi tactical system was not welcome by all people and it didn't felt like the old west anymore. Wild Arms 5 tried to fix some things but by the time it landed everyone moved on.
This probably won’t be the most interesting videos for fans of the series, but I wanted to post it here anyway. My “Shorty Spotlights” series is mainly intended to draw attention to lesser-known games, both old and new, like Wild ARMs. I also do reviews, Let’s Plays, and rants, about a wide variety of games, so I hope you guys will check my channel out! And if possible, please leave a comment on the video!

And the series is kind of back.
OG Wild Arms is a near perfect form of classic RPG. From the opening festival with the stat boosts to many many secret bosses
Actually get the ultimate and broken item "sheriff star" at the end of the game (because your team must have a very strong equipment dan high level to beat the secret boss) is kinda pointless but also is very cool and proud accomplice to get it.
Lets be honest. Hanpan is why its perfect.
I hope that some dedicated indie developers who love the Wild Arms series may make a good spiritual successor some day. It's great concept that shows a ton of potential in the right hands
Especially the Steampunk Western setting the original games had.
I started work on one 5 years ago - could never finish it tho due to lack of programming and plot skills. made all the graphics tho ( senior pixel artist )
@@fumomofumosarum5893 Sorry to hear that, but I'm glad that people are tying. I'm an artist too so I know the programming side can be difficult hurdle to overcome in gamedev. Do you have the work posted anywhere?
Look up Armed Fantasia - we got our wish!
@@shelterfromcold8620 Thanks for the heads up! Looks promising to say the least
The Wild Arms series has the best dungeon design in any JRPG I've ever played
They aren't too short or too long. The puzzles make you think. There are stage hazards you have to dodge. There's even platforming. It's super fun. Why does no other series copy this?
Modern gamers AND gamedevs are too stupid. Gamedevs have cookie cutter degrees and want to "work for blizzard" or some other nonsense. Anyone can make a game in 2022. Games are no longer made by the most passionate, creative people out there.

@@fillerbunnyninjashark271 Lol! I forgot that one too :P
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271 no it doesn't, you can use the watch or go back and forth once through the door that leads to that room.
@@crabspriteberry9572 it literally takes an hour to unlock
I loved the Wild Arms and Breath of Fire series when I was a kid. Its a shame both fizzled out into nothing.
Brilliant games. I genuinely miss playing them
Ahhh fellow both games fan! 😭 They had so much potential and were ahead of its time 😔 if done right they could be rebooted and gain popularity as big as the FF series...
Im sure you've heard already, but in the wierd case you didnt: there's a double kickstarter campaign right now, from the creators of wild arms and shadow hearts, they are making spiritual successors of both franchises (Armed Fantasia & Penny Blood), it would be cool if you could make a video talking about it so you can spread the word
thanks!
Wild Arms 2 was my first RPG. Nice to see that still are some fans left to remember this franchise.
The first one had such an amazing soundtrack. I'm not a person who usually cares about or remembers the music in games, but that one and a few others really stuck with me.
The alter code F remake has an even better soundtrack
That was the very first thing I noticed back when it came out. It's so catchy and unique. It was a great game, too.
Second one has a fire soundtrack too.
Over the wind from 4 is on constant loop in my head.
Im doing a few OST remakes. for now i have Wild arms two covers and visuals . If you have time check em out and tell me what you think

Doing my 3rd playthrough of WA3 to try to platinum it. The series definitely deserves more love. 3 is my favorite but 2 has my favorite theme in the whole series and that’s battle knightblazer
Knight blazer literally breaks the game and makes the bosses a joke. I've one shot majority of the bosses doing tens of thousands of damage in one attack.
@FillerBunny NinjaShark exactly, Ashley in that form is too OP lmao
Ah wild arms. It’s one of the rpgs franchise I never touched. People praised it a lot. Kinda remind me of what happened with Lunar franchise. Man I miss Lunar… Especially Lunar 2 🥺
You should give it a shot, at least play alter code f. The music is fantastic!
One thing about this series that I don't think gets praised often enough is its dungeon puzzle designs. Puzzles in Wild Arms are a lot more interesting than the usual "push all the boxes onto the switches" JRPG fare. Solutions would often require you to use your tools in clever ways, like using the fact that your throwing knives fall straight down when they hit a wall in order to flip a switch that's otherwise unreachable.
I also think it's interesting that towns aren't actually on the world map at first; you have to talk to people for directions or clues and then go out and search on your own. Often the game doesn't even tell you where to go next, it just tells you to look around and find someone who can give you a lead. It isn't perfect (there were a few times in 3 where I had to just look at a guide), but I think it's kind of a cool idea that requires you to engage a bit more with the world and the NPCs.
Also in 2 your treasure radar item is called the Booty Call. Like not only is that an incredible name, but it's just said with a completely straight face and nobody ever calls attention to it. which just makes it funnier
I've just finished the original Wild Arms, really good game, one of the best 2D JRPGs I've played.
It's fantastic!
JRPG over saturation on the PS2,mainstream critics bashing JRPGs in the mid 2000s,dislike over anime art style in the mid 2000s and WA5 coming out on the PS2 after the PS3.
All of us fans are waiting for "Wild ARMS 6: THE ARMS JUST GOT WILDER!!!" Let's petition that title.
I'm for it. 👍
Akifumi Kaneko, The same writer who wrote Wild Arms wrote Senki Zesshō Symphogear series, Nana Mizuki who sang the Wild Arms 5 opening song voice Tsubasa. Even Noriyasu Agematsu who actually compose some music for Super Smash Bros did Symphogear & has some parallels to Wild Arms with some precursors & ancient people. Man, we'd love to see at LEAST some indie devs and/or big boi devs with some consoles & PCs do a take on Wild Arms or just have em a remaster & they'd be eating wild west for days.
At least Sony kept bringing the older titles back on PSN. That's how I played the first two games. The 3rd one I got used for 10 bucks on PS2.
So me personally, i've only played Wild Arms 4 and 5. WA4's story was incredibly pompous but I did like some characters like Kresnik and Yulie (and Raquel of course). WA5 holds a special place in my heart though. The music was great, story was fantastic and the characters were lovable. I tear up a lil bit every time I see/hear Avril Vent Fleur
Play alter code F if you want to play a wild arms game
I absolutely loved the first Wild Arms, but life being what it is I wound up working so many hours it and FF7 were the last games I played and beat up until the Xbox and Halo were released.
It wasn't for lack of wanting to, it was just for lack of time.
I may have to find copies of the other Wild Arms and try them out.
After all, dated graphics don't bother me, I've still got my SNES going.
I have to say though, the artstyle for this series is magnificent, don't know how I never saw much of it before this video. If they ever do make more, I hope they at least keep whoever was in charge of 5's art direction. In the meantime I'll look more into the series myself
Wild Arms, come back! I love you. Don't leave me!
Thanks for the history, I lost track after 2 (played/finished 1-2). Shame I guess, it had a strong start and I still love that Wild West-y whistling intro/theme music from the first one.
The first Wild Arms is one of my top 5 video games of all time. My interest waned from Wild Arms 2 on as the series began to go deeper and deeper with the whole wild west gunslinger vibe. I loved the rarity of the 'ARM' in the first, and Wild Arms 2 was still a ton of fun for me, but 3 on wouldn't make my top list of RPGs.
Thank you for the shout out to Vagrant Story. My god I loved that game.
Always love your vids man. Merry Christmas this year 🎄
Thanks! Merry Christmas to you as well :)
Man I love Wild Arms. One of my favorite JRPGs.
It hurts my heart so much watching this video? Why? Because I played 5 out of all the WILD ARMS games mentioned above. I started with Wild arms 1, 2, and then 4, code F and then 5. Yes, I missed playing Wild Arms 3 because it was so hard for me to find the DVD. I always like the Tool items from Wild Arms. They are making me feel like a Genius when I solved the puzzle! Thank you Wild Arms. I hope to see you in the future.
I loved the whole series. I still remember watching the opening cutscene for the first time. Amazing .
the first WILD ARM .... i am still playing by now... the music is really the best of the best...
This was one of my fav game back ⬅️ n 97 when I was younger
Loved the first wild arms on the psone
Man, this franchise was always eclipsed despite being absurdly good
This is the first jrpg I ever actually played by myself, I was about 5 or 6. After that I got into all the FF's and I've been going strong my whole life.
Was this video published before Armed Fantasia announcement?
And thus Wild Arms predecessor was born, let me introduce you to Armed Fantasia!
I think there's a possibility it could come back, but that possibility is limited to the next couple years. If we don't see anything on the PS5, I doubt we're ever getting anything Wild Arms again
Well, we did get Million Memories, so it’s not like the series is completely forgotten.
Don't quote me on this but I recall Media Vision interview stated the games are not connected at all - despite the similarities between the games. Like you said, they were going for the Final Fantasy franchise but never got past 5 mainline games.
Only played the first one when I was a kid, though I do remember knowing there was at least #2 and 3...had no idea there were so many!
Oh this is that one with the one animated opening, I remember watching it once like 12 years ago. Crazy coinky dinks
I should point out that Valkyria Chronicles is Published by Sega, not Sony. Media Visions also developed Digimon: Cyber Sleuth too. The problem is that Sony's games division is primarily focused on bigger Western developed games and doesn't seem to have much faith in more Niche or older titles.
"We want the yanks to get into RPGs"
"Make it about guns"
The Japanese know us well
They should remake the first game with modern graphics but have Mother continually follow you about right after the tutorial areas, summoning dementors that attack you and derailing the plot so that it ends after attack on Aldehyde (to be continued). Also, Calamity Jane turns up at the Aldehyde fair because. Also the demons can control time now, and have played the original game so can pre-empt all of the main characters' moves.
There are rumors that a new Wild Arms is being developed and the game is being developed by Mediavision (Valkyria Chronicles).
I mean... If Chrono Cross can g supposedly get a remaster since its release in 2000, anything's possible!
Absolutely!
I LOVE the first Wild Arms!! I still play it every once in a while. I couldn't get into Wild Arms 2 (didn't get too far into it) and Wild Arms 3 completely pissed me off with having to use a radar to find a damn city. I don't think I got the city after the tutorial to pop up. Even after looking it up.
Another great series, hope if they do bring it back they don't ruin it.
I would be happy with a bare bones Wild Arms collections, considering Ive never played a game after the second one and doubt these old games are easy to access now.
theyre stupid expensve on ebay now
Im doing a few wild arms OST remakes. for now i have Wild arms two covers and visuals . If you have time check em out and tell me what you think

My opinion here and probably the only one, but Wild Arms 1 was still the best of them all. I played all the numbered sequels, but nothing did it quite for me as Wild Arms did it despite the barely serviceable battle graphics.
i will always know wild arms as the town theme from arcane adventures
The first Wild ARMs is a fantastic game.
to answer your question, no it shouldn't be rebranded. playing with nostalgia will just ruin our nostalgia. Wild Arms came during the golden era of JRPG, and we all enjoyed it. it's now over we got to accept it.
Shadow hearts next? Wild Arms needs a Fire Emblem Awakening reboot
Wild Arms 5 is my favorite. I also quite like the Wild Arms XF PSP game.
i played Wild Arms 1 & 2 and it was Great Experience for me 🤗👍👌
Basically the wild arms is done, their last project was WA Alter code right? The sales wad flopped i heard
Not sure if this considered good news but Armed Fantasia seems to be a spiritual successor of Wild Arms series. I do still like Sony to publish new games or even remakes.
I'd like to see a Wild Arms remake rather than Wild Arms 6.
I think there’s a possibility we could get a new wild arms game but I would suggest that Sony maybe re-release a PS five port of some of the wild arms games.
Best whishes for a new Wild Arms game, I am not exactly a fan of the serie (I only played the first one back in the PS1 but never tried the others) but I know the feeling of "Wanting more" from a franchise and not getting it... it can be really depressing, so, hope you'll get a new Wild Arms game, cheers ~
Replayed the first Wild Arms earlier this year. Still think I have my well worn original copy somewhere around here.
The western/fantasy mashup is still so unique, and there are so many great musical nods to classic spaghetti western soundtracks.
Never finished 2 although I need to. Wild Arms 3 was a disappointment and I kind of gave up on the series after that, only coming back for the Alter Code F remake of the first game.
3 is a bit of a let down. 5 is pretty good though.
First video I've found of your channel.
I'm just writing this comment for myself, so i know where my journey with you started.
Cause i'm 5 minutes in to the video and i already know I'm gonna be subscribing to your channel.
This is a fair review & really good. With the Wild Arms franchise they're sitting on gold they just need to make a modern game. & why not they could give names like Witcher, Zelda, Red Dead & FFXV a serious run for their money. If they market it right they could draw from all of those fan bases & make one great new game.
i really hate it when they make a mediocre or even awful mobile game of a beloved series and take a gatcha failing as reason to not make any new wildarms games
3:00 Filgaia was the name in the English translation. In Japanese, it was Fargaia.
3:10 The picture you show next to the Elw is... not an Elw. That's Cecillia, a human. Misleading imagery there.
3:12 The Crimson Nobels weren't introduced until WA2.
3:13 The Baskar aren't a separate race from humans - Baskar is simply the name of their village in multiple games, but they are still human.
5:40 The U.S. and E.U. releases were not "Ports". A Port is when a game built on one hardware is rewritten to play on a different hardware. Despite being different region codes, the hardware was the same. Get your terminology right.
6:55 The Wild Arms games do NOT "take place in the same universe". Names are recycled, but the actual planets and settings are different for every game.
10:40 Again, the games do NOT "take place in the same universe". Case in point, in WA2 and WA3, Lombardia is a metal dragon. In WA:XF, Lombardia is an interdimensional spacecraft. These are NOT the same universe!
Damn you picken em apart lol. Bt all are correct corrections
Im doing a few OST remakes. for now i have Wild arms two covers and visuals . If you have time check em out and tell me what you think

Ff7 getting a remake and sony never giving us a new legend of dragoon despite people begging for one since 2000 is wild to me.
The music was so good
An live action film for wiled arms is in development with writer of mad max
Need Wild Arms and Breath of Fire to come back
I think it's best that Wild Arms ended on the note that it did. Lately, there's been a whole push of nostalgia on old IPs and too many radical changes that cater to new fans rather than old ones. We still have the old games to play and fondly remember by, and that should be enough. And if there's someone that really wants a new Wild Arms experience, they can make a whole new IP inspired by it and garner interest that way, without compromising a series that has gently been forgotten. I love playing Wild Arms (beat acF and 3, working towards the rest) but I want to keep those memories pure if possible.
WA has always been one of those series that I’ve always admired from afar but never gave a shot. If they really did make a new game, I’d give it a shot. And if I could actually purchase stuff on my Vita (server issues or somethin), I’d look into the PSP one cause that looks like fun, as I’m a big fan of spin-off titles like FFT
What happened to wild arms? I have a feeling I’m about to find out. 😁
Worth noting that 2 and alter code didn’t reach the U.K., and 4 & 5 seemed to have a limited release that didn’t get much attention or marketing c’: I’m still wanting to play alter code
good point
This is an awesome franchise, I really like the Wild Arms 5 battle system, I could grind for hours. And I really wish to see a new game, or something else that a mobile game.
And here I thought fans of Xenogears have it rough. But you guys have been waiting on a spiritual sequel for years now.
You should do a What happened to... Breath of Fire series
none of the wild arms games are set in the same universe, they just us the same name for their worlds, that’s why the same metal demons in 3 have different backstories than they do in 1
With series like this and Legend of Dragoon... Sony could clean house if they REALLY wanted to.
ghad Wild Arms haha this is the sole reason why i bought Thousand Arms thinking it's related to one xD
anyways my most fave was Wild Arms 2 and 5 w/ 5 i painstakingly printed all the chests locations just to get Dean's Nine Lives costume w/c is literally just Ashley's Knight Blazer from WA2 hahaha how cool was that? (considering WA5 is a big fanservice game xD)
WA3 was also one of my faves (my sister too lol) this is the only WA title she enjoyed.
WA4 unfortunately I haven't played it due to having broken / inoperable copies
so yeah, still hoping for a new Wild Arms mainline title from Sony. idc if it's from the PS4 or PS5 just give us a new damn WA game that's not shovel ware or mobile
Wild arms xf’s title is meant to be short for wild arms crossfire
For me 1 and 5 are the best and I am currently very aware of armed fantasia
Can we all at least appreciate that your parties are called dream chasers? I miss when games gave things cool job titles.
I like the whole series, heck if you ask me, wild arms 5 might not be an AAA game, but was a very, very solid jrpg nonetheless :/
I would have loved a new wild arms 6, but ehhhh
I hope Sony will revamp series... me too do enjoy these series
I will suplex anyone who tells me Wild Arms 3 sucks to my face! I fricking loved that game. I still know the lyrics to the intro song to this day! I beat that game 6 times!!!
3 is also my favorite
:)
I specifically love the psp version
I love wild arms
I'd love to see Wild ARMs return...but let's face it. _IF_ Wild ARMs returned, it wouldn't be anywhere near like what we loved 14+ years ago. Sony seems to *hate* games with Japanese play aesthetics/play style. Sony's last "Japan games" preview for the PS5 showcased a bunch of games made by companies based in Japan, but looked and appeared to play like what a B-level US game developer would crap out for a shiny copper coin.
Wild Arms was a weird B-tier JRPG with a lotta problems past 2, like 3 and ACF having jank as hell gameplay, 4 being the series equivalent of Shadow Hearts: From The New World (read bad series ruining tone making decent to good gameplay irrelevant), and 5 being cope for 4's sins but still having several degrees of 4's writing. It just couldn't evolve in a way that didn't anger people.
I bought the first one off psn and played up to the part where you had to sneak out of a castle. I couldn't figure out how to not get caught an rage quit... Maybe it's time I give the game another try. Knowing me it will be simple and I will end up cursing my younger self for being dumb.
8:00 isn't that ghost stories?
For me it was just weird. The story and themes in 1 and 2 were really good, but 3 and on it's very watered down. 4 and 5 had some decent story bits, but it's not the same. Same for the dungeon design. 1 and 2 have amazing dungeons, but it dropped off really hard in later games. 4 did try and was an improvement over 3, but 5's dungeons are awful. Music is good in all the games though. I didn't mind the hex system in 4, but I think it needed more development.
Oooooooh turn based tactical wild arms
Armed Fantasia continuing Wild Arms!
Wild Arms 3 was considered one of the worst?? Wow, I always thought 4 and 5 did the worst.
that intro of wild arms 1 is so nostalgic. I always whistle along with it.
Same.
I still watch the opening on UA-cam from time to time.
Yessssss.
And no one know what is the whistle beat comes from 😂🤣
So much nostalgia on the opening
Looks like this is another series that has a successor now. Armed Fantasia is the name. It has the original team working on it with the same composers for this series! This history lesson was great because it reaffirms my choice even more to back it on Kickstarter. Good stuff dude!
Great video dude. While I can’t say I have the same fondness for the later entries, Wild Arms 1-3 were an essential part of my childhood and some of the first RPGs I think of from that generation. Hell, I even still have a WA2 picture set as my desktop background right now lol. Probably my favorite RPG series from back then that’s no longer going on to this day (Suikoden and Grandia are close though).
The music was absolutely incredible and of course the wild western fantasy setting was insanely cool, I was really into Trigun so anything similar to that was right up my alley. We really need more pieces of fiction that take place in settings like those. We make JRPG content on our channel as well so I’m really looking forward to the day of covering these games in more detail.
Thanks for the nostalgia!
Thanks for watching!
Grew up with the original Wild Arms. . . Lots of nostalgia and fond memories with that game (red balloon).
Would love to see the series come back in some capacity, even if it were just a remake of the original. . . The western'ish J-RPG feel to it is so pleasant.
Wild Arms 3 was one of the first rpgs I ever played as a kid and saw me through the worst years of my life. It'll always have a special place in my heart and I hope the series lives on somehow.
It's not just nostalgia. It's a style of RPG that has been lost for a while and would refresh the genre for new fans too.
I miss fun JRPGs. Modern JRPGs are too cookie cutter right now.
that's why the retro handheld community is trending these days
@@Daimon12820 Trending where?
@@faidou9954 in my heart
Yeah. It's because developers fell off track trying to be the next big thing when they should have focused on what brought people into their games in the first place.
There's a reason the Switch is becoming people's new favorite system. There's a reason spiritual successors are being lauded. These games are filling in the holes that the original IP owners walked away from.
