My grandfather gave me a Rolex 6694 shortly before he passed away, in the late '90s. I don't wear it often, not because I don't like it, but to preserve it and eventually pass it down to my son one day. The funny part of the story is, why did my grandfather buy this watch? He had an accident that destroyed his Omega 625, so he bought a more robust watch. The funny twist: a couple of years ago, I found the broken Omega in a drawer of a piece of furniture in a storage room... Well, I sent it out for restoration, and now it works perfectly, although I left the dial with its defects-it gives it a lot of character. Conclusion: now I have both watches working perfectly.

So in the same way your 36mm 14270 will do the same but even at a higher level since it’s has (and you seem to agree!) a closer DNA of the one your grandfather had. I’m in total agreement that the Explorer is just more correct in its 36mm version and not only that but in the older references (1016,14270 & 114270) compared to the 124270, the current 36mm that just doesn’t have the same effect in regards to its dimensions. The older references are just perfect in their dimensions! An even bigger reason it was the right move is as you stated, you will wear it more and that will bring your loved grandfather to your mind and heart even more. Congratulations on your decision, be at peace about it! I own a 114270 and have my own story how it brings me back to my late brother!
I'm glad that you now love and appreciate your brand new used Rolex. Enjoy it for decades. When my youngest brother passed away last year, I inherited a swag of watches. One of those watches was a Citizen 7N0419 38mm quartz. I dated this watch to be around 1991? After replacing the battery and the caseback gasket, it worked to this day. And I do wear it on a regular basis. It's one of my favourites. The other favourite is the Pulsar PX3223X Solar. When I first saw the Pulsar online, I knew I had to buy it. Swapping 39 for 36 makes sense, and like you said it's THE size to have. And I'm sporting 7.25" wrists. Bought mine nearly a year ago and it's definitely my most worn since. Only thing, I would (did) have gone new.
6.3” wrist guy here, and I understand your feelings on this video 100%. My collection ranges from vintage 33 mm to chunky 42 mm chronos, but I really saw the light the first time I tried a 37 mm GADA watch. I always thought the Explorer was a bit boring, until i saw it for real the other day. Those white gold indices on Rolex's shine like nothing else. I tried on an Air King (my grail) and now really want one. On sizes, i always thought i had really small wrists, but i also tried on the Hamilton Frogman 46 and the Breitling Superocean 46 and both fit perfectly with space to spare!! The larger Murph and Longines Majetek also surprised me, the latter being an absolutely sensational watch.
Great story and congrats on your new, old watch. I thought the lug to lug on the 39 was fine on you. But if the change gets you to wear it more, then it’s the right move.
Mazel Tov on the trade in! I agree that the Explorer is meant to be 36mm, it is absolute perfection at that size. Same goes with the DJ. Enjoy it well and build all those memories!
Glad you’ve found a size and variant that suits your personality and wrist size. I’m the other way, started out with 36mm then gravitated up to 42, then 40 then 41. Strangely enough I’d say 40mm is a Large. 42mm is XL and anything over 42mm is 2XL+. So by this logic I’ve just made up, 36mm is a Medium size and you’ve got medium sized wrists so it’s a match made in horological heaven. Watches are like clothing. You wouldn’t wear a suit with the shoulders too big for you or shoes in size 13 when you’re an 8. You’ve just found the right sized watch so congrats.
got my 39mm with the white dial on the 3-link "Bader" bracelet watch on AMZWATCH 3 weeks ago and am loving it to pieces. Absolute fantastic watch that wears super comfortable on my 6.75 inch wrist. Chose the 3-link over the 5-link bracelet for the toolless quick adjustment. Way more comfortable than my Longines Hydroconquest 41 mm.
In 2011, I bought a Rolex Deepsea with the inheritance from my mother's passing. And like you, over the years, Rolex lost its shine. But, I made the rule that I would only sell the watch if I saw a better one. In 2021, I came across the JLC Polaris Marina Date and it was love at first sight. The Rolex got sold and not a day of regret, my JLC is still the watch my mother bought.
I think you did right; Explorer should be 36mm. Maybe I'd have gotten the 114270 instead though or the 124270 even if the aggressive taper isnt for everyone
I'm not sure I was emotionally prepared for this video, but you made a good argument. While I think the 39mm is the perfect size on me (not that I have one...I have an Explorer II), I think the 36 fits your wrist better. I'm sure that was a tough call, but it sounds like the right one.
Absolutely spot on decision mate. You do what you want not what other people think you should do. Of course I’ve been telling you for years the correct size for an explorer is 36mm. 😂👌
I didn’t know the 14270 said “Swiss Made” on the dial. I thought that was only the 114270. Learn something new every day. I own the 114270 and I love it.
I have been having a similar debate. I wore my Cartier Santos to the birth of my son, among a few other major milestones. Now I just don’t seem to be reaching for it and am debating selling it to help fund some other things I have been lusting after (Pelgagos 39, Doxa 300 Carbon in the short term, Grand Seiko Mistflake eventually)
ooooooooooof!!!!! shays a big call for sure! Ive still got the Tag Heuer Formula 1 from my daughters birth and the Vertex MP45! Not sure I'm ever gonna let them go! BUT!!!!!! Its you and your choice my friend!
It all makes sense now, I was 17 in 97. Guess that’s partly why I enjoy following this channel so much even though our tastes might not always aligned (Yes I’m looking at you, field watches 😅)
Great decision MWC! Back then, the Explorer was still an attainable, aspirational tool watch! And at 36mm you can actually bend your wrist without pain! Hollow end links and centre links, with a stamped clasp make it lighter and more comfortable. Sometimes (not always) the classic designs are the best! It definitely suits you better. Pure class!
I absolutely understand your situation!!!! The 39mm is a way to funny size, the 36mm in either old or new reference is the 100% classic No matter how big or small your wrist is….. brilliant episode 👍
felt the same about my 214270 but traded it towards a Patek 5055G-010 as I already had a 2021 37MM Yachtmaster which scratches the vintage size Rolex itch but has the latest bracelet with ez link etc.
I love the explorer. The 214270 is my favorite watch in my collection. Congratulations and I hope you make a ton of great memories wearing your new explorer!
You make a clear point on this case and I understand now. Knowledge in the hobby make early decisions feel strange or wrong. Back in the past, I wanted a tag 😂. Enjoy it Russ!
@@dominicrusho In the past... They have done some shady stuff like the Seiko Chronograph movement for the anniversary of the brand and more recently the appointment of the new CEO (the son of the owner) who not even 30. He must have a lots of friends in the company 😉. But recently, they are launching some very nice new models and I admit that I consider them again.
I bought a 214270 to commemorate the birth of my son. But I hate seeing explorer below the pinion for some reason. I intend to get a 36mm at some point in the future as well.
I love this story and I’m glad you ended up with a 36mm and I think you made the right choice. I agree an explorer is meant to be 36mm. I want to find a 91 for myself some day when I can afford one, as it’s my birth year. No family relation to the watch just want a watch of my own to build memories with for my kids some day
Russell! My dad was a lifelong 1016 guy! Bought it himself in 1967 as a young guy cashing his first real check to buy a 'luxury watch'. Now in his late 80's - he wanted the money out of it (a 1967 with box and papers from one owner -> 25k!) - I couldn't afford it! Now... I'd love to do the same family watch tradition and get my own new one, but I struggle mightily with my hate of the company (I was told quite rudely by local AD that waiting list was 'full', unless I was interested in some precious metal women's Rolexes). Rolex, the company - are dicks! So, still no Explorer! Also - that current model with "Explorer" written at the top seems to have a bit too much negative space below it...
The bit about your rolex love really resonates... I've taken myself off any waiting lists and just wear my Sinn EZM 3F and a vintage 34mm longines from 1970 (+casio W-59 occasionally and a G shock)... glad to be free of the "must save £7000 and get that Datejust " obsession
Fair enough. But I'm a bigger dude and a 36mm watch just seems dainty on me. I much prefer the 39mm Explorer. Feels like the "golden" sweet spot in terms of size.
Probably the only Rolex I kinda like. No hideous magnifying glass glued onto it and almost perfectly symmetrical without a date complication killing the 3 o' clock position. I can live with the triangle at 12 o ' clock, but the actual number would have made it almost perfect. I also hate the text walls on the dial. They can put them on the back!
I was initially a little surprised to hear you’d traded in the 214270 given it’s significance but I think your reasoning is sound and you’ve done what feels right for you, and that’s what’s important. The 14270 is a fantastic reference and as you mentioned, it’s far more in keeping with the actual watch your grandad owned. Loved this video MWC. Here’s to George 🍻
I had the same thing with a King Seiko I bought new; never wore it just couldn't love it. Got it for a birthday. When I sold it on eBay after it was gathering dust for months my entire family was disappointed.
When I watched the video on the comparison of the two I knew you were torn. Good choice though, I do love the smaller watches after seeing on my own wrist the difference between 42 and 38. I now understand the attraction to a smaller more representative size to an iconic piece. Health to wear and make memories
My favorite watch is my 114270 very closely related. I found myself going back to it even through I had other more expensive watches. I’m so glad I own a piece of history. New Rolex just doesn’t do it for me.
There is no right or wrong, it's what YOU like. I wanted the 36mm Explorer and then when I actually tried it on.. it just looked too small.. maybe Im used to the Sub and I needed time to adjust to it. But it was too much to risk, if I didnt start to like it
At this point I’d do what you did. The 114270 is still the true explorer (to me). I’ve tried all the variants including the 39. The new 36 is mechanically better but doesn’t have the presence of the old 36 with the 20mm clasp. I actually got a better fit on wrist with all the micro adjusts on the old jingly stamped clasp.
Congratulations, and good luck. I actually prefer this reference to the one you have, but if I were you, I'd swap it out for the Submariner 14060m. But if you'd rather already have an Explorer 1, this is your best bet.
I want a 39mm Explorer so badly I can taste it, but I can't justify the expense. I can "afford" to buy one (on the secondary market) but it would wiping out most of my savings, that i can't earn back, because the cost of living is too much to save anymore.
If you're not wearing a watch and you haven't made a good connection with it, it only makes sense that you move it on. Congratulations on the new one. If you flog that one in a couple of years , I'll never let you live it down! 🤣❤
Glad you are happy with your smaller sized Explorer and you have definitely made the right decision for all the reasons you explain. I own the Explorer 1 40mm and have a similar wrist size. I love it, though if I had to get the 36mm, I would get the version you have and not the 124270. The new 36mm has seen Rolex taper the bracelet to 14mm, making it feel dainty, feminine and not very "tool watch". It's aimed at women - a "his n hers" pairing. There is no "right size" for the Rolex Explorer 1 in my opinion since personal taste is a very individual thing. Many Rolex losers harp on that the 36mm is the last word in the Explorer 1 because it's faithful the original - I guess they mean the 1953 first release and not the Smiths De Lux that the watch is based on. But by that argument, the Rolex Submariner is no longer "faithful" to the original where that too was first released in 1953 in 37mm. It's now 41mm. If the 36mm is only "inspired" by the SDL "Everest" watch then why can't the 40mm be "inspired" from the original? Rolex have done that with the modern Submariner and it looks like they are attempting it with the Explorer 1 now as well. Based on a few auction sites, it looks like the 40mm is in higher demand since it always goes for a premium over the 36mm. Watch tastes change like you point out in this video where Rolex changed the size to 34mm for a decade or two before going back to 36mm, which was actually nearer the size of the Smiths De Lux, but now in the modern era a larger watch is preferred. For men, 42mm is the best selling size across all watch categories according to WoS. I actually see more long term value in the 40mm since it will probably be discontinued. There will be demand for it and Rolex are experts at marketing and generating demand/using sales psychology tactics. It then increases the "value" and perception of the 36mm...
No harm in selling (unless it was his actual watch with sentimental value) and you'd probably make a profit anyway now. I also think 36mm would be better for our sized wrists. Only a watch, can always buy one again (or don't buy to start with ideally, haha). I don't mind avoiding vintage watches, not worth the trouble. San Martin and Cronos do good knock-offs, if nothing else it's a good way to try the case shape and sizes.
I was in Venice a year ago and tried on the 114270 and 214270 in a small family-owned jewelry store. The old 36 explorer was absolutely stunning with the deep black dial and white gold hands. It fit perfectly and was very comfortable. The 114270 had their own charm! Unfortunately, I couldn't afford to buy it at the time, but I'll get it someday! Is it good bracelet for everyday use? Because the 214270 has a more solid and better-made clasp and bracelet.
I would've sell my rolex too if its not an inheritance from my dad. Really, I have no use for it, my peasant lifestyle never calls for it, its mint but that only means that I would've choose another watch to wear almost every time. My Aqua Terra saw more use whenever I'm in formal occasions. My daily beater would always be my G-Shock.
Yep fair enough. Important thing is this crazy collecting hobby of ours is rule number one. Wear what you like. If it makes you smile when you look at it. Then it’s a winner! Nice one mate, may you build many find memories with that roller. Cheers
If you haven’t bonded with a watch and the size doesn’t feel right then why wouldn’t you trade it in !! Getting it right means a lot especially when spending a good chunk of money on one.

Great story and congrats on your new, old watch. I thought the lug to lug on the 39 was fine on you. But if the change gets you to wear it more, then it’s the right move.
Excellent choice!!! The 36mm Explorer is the way to go 14270, 114270, or 124270 you won't go wrong. Congrats
At the end of the day, it’s how you feel about it. Glad you found one that works for you!👍🏼. Thanks for sharing such a personal story.
As usual thank you for the comment my friend!
got my 39mm with the white dial on the 3-link "Bader" bracelet watch on AMZWATCH 3 weeks ago and am loving it to pieces.
I have the 114270 and love how it looks and fits. The 3,6,9 numerals look more elegant than on the current model.
Yeah makes a lot of sense. Sometimes we try to make ‘em work, but if it don’t, it don’t. Difficult, but onwards and upwards. 😎👍🏼
100% Thank you my friend
Good for you for recognizing the fact that your not happy with that watch. Your not letting the name brand of the watch convince you to keep it
I'm not sure I was emotionally prepared for this video, but you made a good argument. While I think the 39mm is the perfect size on me (not that I have one...I have an Explorer II), I think the 36 fits your wrist better. I'm sure that was a tough call, but it sounds like the right one.
Thank you so much for the comment my friend!
Absolutely spot on decision mate. You do what you want not what other people think you should do. Of course I’ve been telling you for years the correct size for an explorer is 36mm. 😂👌
it's the feeling that you feel towards the watch, not anyone else seems like the right decision
Pure class!
It's hard for me to imagine someone else wearing one of my watches. This is why I have a secondary case.
You made the right choice.
I absolutely understand your situation!!!!
The 39mm is a way to funny size, the 36mm in either old or new reference is the 100% classic No matter how big or small your wrist is….. brilliant episode 👍
It definitely looks better than the larger one. It's like you were born wearing it. Looks beautiful.
Thanks for watching Anthony!
Great choice! I really enjoy my Explorer (124270).
felt the same about my 214270 but traded it towards a Patek 5055G-010 as I already had a 2021 37MM Yachtmaster which scratches the vintage size Rolex itch but has the latest bracelet with ez link etc.
Thanks Christian!
If you still think TAG Heuer is crap then you have a lot left to learn, young grasshopper
Good for you. I can really see how happy you are about the new watch. 👍
I think you made the right choice. The 36 mm looks better than the 39 mm. I personally preferred a 36 watch.
You’re absolutely correct 👍
I bought a 214270 to commemorate the birth of my son. But I hate seeing explorer below the pinion for some reason. I intend to get a 36mm at some point in the future as well.
I love this story and I’m glad you ended up with a 36mm and I think you made the right choice. I agree an explorer is meant to be 36mm. I want to find a 91 for myself some day when I can afford one, as it’s my birth year. No family relation to the watch just want a watch of my own to build memories with for my kids some day
Great story, gorgeous/classic watch, thanks for sharing it.
Nice one Russ! I completely understand why you made that change, good choice 👍
Thanks Nath! hope you are well!
Congrats on the new Explorer. You got the watch that is perfect for you and that's what's most important in the end.
I've had a 14270 for about a year but just sold it as I get a 124270 from AD in October. It will stay in my collection for an eternity.
7 1/4" wrist owner here. It feels like being reborn when you realise most 40mm+ suck and 36-39mm is ths best watch size
A real man never goes under 40mm.
Fair enough. But I'm a bigger dude and a 36mm watch just seems dainty on me. I much prefer the 39mm Explorer. Feels like the "golden" sweet spot in terms of size.
Wow Rus . You know when things have got to go they've got to go. Love your channel mate.
Cheers Garry!
Defo the 36 suits you a lot better, congratulations for the tough choice but being happier
But it was too much to risk, if I didnt start to like it
Wearing my 124270 as I watch this. You made the right choice. Unless you have very large wrists, 36mm is the way to go with the Explorer.
The 36mm Rolex explorer is a beauty. :)
You did the right thing mate. No question.
Thank you my friend!
Great decision, I tried the 39mm explorer for a day and it was too flat and large..it's an odd profile as 40mm or 42mm suit me fine.
I just tried on a 36 and 40 today. Unfortunately the 36 is too small on my 7.5 wrist. 40 seems too large to me but it’s the obvious choice
You made the right decision! Thanks for sharing.
That was pure poetry, sir. Many thanks.
Smart move. I love the 36 so much I have both 14270 and 114270.
I've been thinking about replacing the watch my Dad gave me, thanks for the justification.
You made the right choice imo. Congrats Russel, enjoy!!!
Looks great on you Russ. Enjoy it 🙌🏼
Cheers Tim!
Why not the current 124270? All the best characteristics of your 39 in the smaller 36 size? Or was the more vintage bracelet preferred in this case?
The taper of the bracelet is way too extreme . I don’t like the Rolex signed rehaut. Older models just feel more like enthusiast watches
I got the 214270 36mm
Friend sorted it for my 50th
Hardly wear it even tho it slips under the radar looks wise.
36mm suits u better glad that yr happy with the trade.
Yep fair enough. Important thing is this crazy collecting hobby of ours is rule number one. Wear what you like. If it makes you smile when you look at it. Then it’s a winner! Nice one mate, may you build many find memories with that roller. Cheers
both sizes work just have to decide which works best for you...the Explorer is just a superb icon
Good move. You got a version of the Explorer that makes you happy.
Do you know what I just discovered, MWC? Not only do I like your watch reviews and watch content, but I like you!
Bob! That makes me double happy!
Totally love your new Explorer. That's the one id get. Well done
If you haven’t bonded with a watch and the size doesn’t feel right then why wouldn’t you trade it in !! Getting it right means a lot especially when spending a good chunk of money on one.
Glad you found a watch that makes you happy and still reminds you of your Grandfather.
