This reminded me of my first tabletop radio I got for Christmas, it was a GE pink radio and AM only. Loved that radio, I think the lady that gets this will be so pleased with it!
Ron, since you use various rattle-cans for your restorations, an easy way to rattle them until the ball is truly free & the paint or whatever is properly mixed was shown a year ago (i.e., in 2021) by the "sixtyfiveford" channel here on UA-cam in a video called "EASIEST Spray Paint Can Shaker Stirrer BUILD drill powered." I think he said that he spent less than ~$20 on it. He basically used about a 12-inch length of ~3-inch diameter sewer pipe plus he modified a ~3-inch test plug to have a long enough bolt to chuck into his drill motor. Tighten the plug into the end of the pipe and drop the rattle-can into the open end of the pipe. "Aim" it up so that the can doesn't fall out and spin it up -- it takes much less time & effort to properly shake up the rattle-can using something like he shows than wearing yourself out shaking the cans by hand. (I'm writing this from watching his video about a year ago, so I probably have some details wrong, but I've got the basic idea correct.)
Interesting radio, I've never seen one with octals & miniatures mixed. Another option for cleaning sealed pots is an adapter that screws over the mounting threads and forces solvent between the shaft and body. My kit has 2 thread sizes. I forget exactly who I got mine from but it was one of the guitar amp component suppliers.
Silvertone model 9001 from 1949. The 9000 model had a three section electrolytic cap this one had a two section one. Shares the same chassis and cabinet. Missing radio dial knob looked like one from an old fashioned kitchen timer but was in an "s" shape for Silvertone instead of the side of a space rocket! The paint job was a treat to see and I hope she likes her present Ron. She be able to listen to the ball games now!
That volume knob turned out nice!! Thats the kind of thing i tend to be really good at. I swear, every time i turn around i find something and think "wait, thatll work perfectly!'
I had a buzzing speaker but it wasn’t a loose cone or tear in the paper. It was the music it was playing! Nice thoughtful gift f on the heart you gave there. I love getting presents like a repurposed old radio that was given a lot of love.
The chassis is hot. The radio must not be used around water such as the bathtub, Jacuzzi, or even the kitchen sink. Other than that the risk is vanishingly low.
A living room worthy radio 📻. I’m glad 😀 you’re making this into a gift 🎁 for somebody. Ya can surprise them further by putting it under the Christmas 🎄 tree 🌲. The chassis looks very simple. No dial cord to break. I also don’t think 🤔 that this has a dial light 💡. Pink is a GREAT 😊 color. Often a color associated with cancer ♋️ awareness. Your friend, Jeff.
Hi Ron your friend Dave here it's amazing how you restored that old radio you definitely very professional about your work I always like watching your videos I never miss one I like seeing your cat too I work on a few myself when I get time you're the best in the business Ron may God bless you and keep you safe always
I can hear the Pittsburg Pirates playing on my Nonna's "American 5" radio on top the "ice-a box" as she used to say... was one of those old refrigerators with the condenser and compressor up on the top. Man I miss those days...
I use Paint Shop Pro 5. It is an old version of paint shop pro that is now available for free download. It has some issues the latest version (which costs money) does not but mainly it has a much easier to use user interface.
They really aren't repairable. Best way is to just watch for another model on ebay with a good dial glass. Another is to get a new glass cut and print a clear decal on your computer with some art program.
Another nice one Ron . Enjoyed watching . Takes me much longer than you to replace caps . I think you could do them blindfolded ! Best wishes from the UK .
I would like to have a bunch of kitties too but two is all I can manage right now. With all the radios in my house I can't have them jumping all over the place!
Regarding those wax capacitors, I'd heard that the line on the end only marked which side was connected to the outer metal case of the capacitor, but later I discovered one with the lines on the other end and had me wonder if they really are polarised or not...
endless arguments over that one, some say yes, others no, SOME say with the more modern film caps it no longer matters, i have found this to be true myself. depends on who you ask.
@@suzakule text was printed the other way up top, I changed it for a bipolar capacitor, I've not seen a convincing argument for it being either way, but then why make them differently?
@@phonotical LONG ago, back when the paper caps were made, 40s-60s it DID matter, outer foil edge vs the inner core, it could have a drastic effect on tube tech, but with modern film caps, the effect is MUCH less, that is not saying that it is gone completely, but from I have seen in my restoration work, the way I put in FILM caps no longer matters. bipolar capacitors is another story ( electrolytic and so on )
Well - I wouldn't say 'polarised' but they marked the outer foil of these capacitors because it picks up more hum/noise and therefore usually was connected to the ground side. Newer capacitors _sometimes_ have this effect too. You can check that easily with an amlifier or an oszilloscope: take the capacitor between your fingers (not touching the leads) and compare the hum when connecting one of the leads. Sometimes there are differences but it's seldom nowadays. If that's a problem depends on its use ...

I love how the radio matches your dress!
Very nice Ron ,another future vintage radio collector will be born with such a great gift .best wishes & Stay Healthy.
One of my favorite channels, very interesting radio, as always

That's fine work. I work on vintage audio gear but I haven't worked on a five-tube AM radio in probably 40 years.
Your electronic wizardry is a pleasure to watch.

A beautiful pink radio to match the beautifuly worn pink blouse.
Nice restore. I would have put some adhesive rubber feet on the bottom of the cabinet for protection.
It has two plastic ridges that space the radio up off the table. The rubber feet would be a nice idea though.
Such a pretty, sweet kitty!
I wonder if they had a lot of WWII surplus and used what ever was cheaper?
poor kitty is hot mines lives like a queen foam mattresses cool air-conditioning nothin but the best this texas heat is unbearable at times
Thanks for making this video. Always fun to watch you in action.
Why did you drill a hole in the volume control? Is that one of those rare sealed controls?
The cleaner spray needs to go onto the resistance element. It is not sealed, but not any cracks in handy places.
One thing that Gets me is the Ending of you Video, It is missing something...Great Video, Just missing something in the End....
Would you be referring to a cardboard or plastic insulator on the inside of the power plug or better yet a polarized plug due to a hot chassis?
A very talented man. No two ways about it.
Amazing.
great work,,pretty in pink
I restored a nice little '39 Philco in metallic purple for my wife. It looks fantastic!
very good! Better than shoe leather brown!

Great work, Ron, the girl that is getting this radio, as a present, is very lucky in deed, show her your video here.
Very cute radio. Nice job Ron.

Nice Work! Patience of a Saint!
Nice save for a set that'll like good on a kitchen shelf
Aww, what a cute litttle radio, and nice restoration! :)
Great Work Buddy

This was great work. The quality of Rustoleum spray paint has declined steeply this year.
It helps if you shake it until the ball stops rattling!
Yes. It varies greatly with the color I find. Multiple thinner coats work quite well.
It's those stupid spray tips that get easily clogged. Forces you to buy two cans and thus more profit.
Well friend, that was quite fun! thanks a bunch!
That is really neat! Good job restoring it.
Beautiful gift, love the color!
I see the tuning cap is loose, could that cause a problem?
Are the chassis mounting screws hot?? Hope that this will not be her last birthday😵💫.

That’s a good tip about what to do about a buzzing speaker!
very nice job (and you are lucky there are still MW broadcastings over there in US)
Benefit of a free capitalist society. Broadcasting is a lucrative business in the USA. There are waiting lines for channel space in some markets.
You’re bound to make someone happy with that

The master at work...
What's the proper way to repair a hole in a speaker cone?
Paper and some wood glue to reinforce it. Black craft paper tends to match the cone closely.
Try used dryer sheets for reinforcement and service cement.
