At 0:22 I just noticed Athena acknowledged Odysseus was her friend. Quite the growth from "You're not looking for a mentor; I'm not looking for a friend!"
Also, I love that she's just adopted this family as her pet humans. Like getting a new puppy (Telemachus) after your dog (Odysseus) ran away bc it reminds you of your dog in looks and mannerisms.
As a god a of Wisdom it's your job to learn and grow. I think this is a good character arc for her where she accepts the parts of her she viewed as weak or unnecessary to make the 'Greatest Warrior' realizing its because of those traits that one becomes who they are. If Odysseus didn't love his wife and son more than the world itself, he would've given up, died or worse.
And in the underworld Odysseus states that he lost his MENTOR...

Oh, the face Telemachus makes when he says he's glad he's not dead is just adorable. And Athena giving him the most polite and formal high five in the world is really cute. Really, this song overall is just wholesome, genuine and sweet.

I like this aspect of Athena as she’s showing actual remorse and sadness at the way she reacted to Odysseus and by her helping Telemachus she’s helping repair the rift between her and Odysseus and he doesn’t realize she’s talking about his dad. It’s like this is her way of trying to make amends to Odysseus but since she’s a goddess, she can’t come out and say I was wrong. She has to remain firm and her godly appearance and infallible.
This and the call back to this is my goodbye when Odysseus says "what's a title a goddess could lend if I'll never sleep at night" with Athena saying "maybe I'll be able to sleep at night" showing she can now see what he was talking about, after facing her own guilt when she felt like failed him.

Athena's genuine shock when Telemachus called her his friend was so beyond sweet 😭
That’s my favorite part.
Ok, so you know how you read a story or watch a show when you're younger, you think "this is an awesome story. I like that the protagonist is my age." Then you read it again as an adult and you're like "Wtf, this is a child." What if that's what's going through Athena's head for the past 2 songs?
Athena met Odysseus when he was younger than Telemachus and has been "designing" him since then. She watched him grow and grew with him, then went to war alongside him, and she witnessed her warrior get stronger, wiser and then, defiant.
Then she goes to see Telemachus and she figures he's going to be like Odysseus was as an adult cus he's 20 now, right?
Except he's a total goofball, very idealistic and naive to the war-hardended Athena. And she's disturbed because "that is a child. This is not a warrior, it's a child." She remembers that Odysseus was just as much of a goofball when they first met and wonders how on earth she could have treated him so coldly.
How she purposely kept an emotional distance from him when he was begging to be her friend, how she was so obsessed with molding him in her image that she saw the brightness now present in Telemachus as a nuisance, how she dragged him into her war which darkened his light.
And suddenly she doesn't feel so wise. Before Odysseus was a warrior, he was a kid who wanted to be her friend, and despite everything he did in her name, she didn't give him that simple thing.
So she follows Telemachus's advice and learns from her mistakes. She returns the high-five.

2:13 I have 2 head canons for why Athena was so gentle with her high five.
Head canon 1: Athena has never done a high five, so she decided to be gentle with it due to her inexperience, which I find really wholesome.
Head canon 2: This one is personally my favorite. Athena is so strong that even if she high fives him just a little too hard, she might send him flying & would feel really guilty about it. Which is hilarious. Just imagine this 10 ft tall goddess high-fiving this kid so hard she sends him flying & constantly apologizing & basically just going into full paniced mom mode.

Maybe nobody will see my comment, but in case Gigi gets to see this. I'm an art college drop out, for more than 5 years I gave up on creating art. A month ago~ I found Epic the Musical and Gigi became my favorite artist. Unlike any other artist, Gigi reminded me the joy in creating art. No matter what, these silly little animatics changed something in me and brought back a kind of joy I never knew I missed having in my life.

I absolutely love that this animatic takes it literally-- he gets a bit reckless and falls, but Athena is there to catch him. He will learn as he goes (and so will Athena)

20 is still really young to be fair. Like, his brain isn’t even fully developed. And then compared to a literal God he practically is an infant to her lol
The detail of athena being so tall she had to duck under the doorway and then telemachus getting on her level to connect with her by jumping up on the railing was amazing. And after that she comes down to catch him from falling showing how his effort really did get through to her. ❤️ Talk about character design aiding in story telling! Tall = above it all character learning to see eye to eye with someone very different from herself. Telemachus talks about learning as the obvious apprentice role, but athena being the one learning from this innocent young man and her own mistakes. Telemachus representing her chance to take on a new outlook, the very thing she was offering Odysseus all those years ago, reversing the roles in a way that might turn out better for everyone in the end.

It kinda shows how she evolved and gets Odysseus now, because she also feels guilty about Odysseus' fate too, such as he feels guilty about killing or hurting others. She learnt to have more empathy with him
Telemachus: Because I got in a fight and I didn't die!
Telemachus two seconds later: *trips and almost dies falling off his balcony*
That's why he's excited!

Athena is so cautiously vulnerable in this and I love that interpretation. She has regrets and is trying to change her ways because of it but change is hard and she seems scared of rejection and I just love this because I've gone through something very similar. I feel seen and validated. Athenas redemption arc is a rollercoaster of emotions.
Gigi is the most recognizable animator for Epic, in my opinion. I love it.

I like how there is a reference to Warrior Of The Mind, when Telemachus puts up his hand for a high five, I think that is a reference to when Odysseus does the same thing in Warrior Of The Mind (proven by some behind the scenes videos from Jorge's channel, Jorge acts out the scenes while Athena is singing and does that), but only this time Athena actually gives Telemachus a high five. :)

One of the tapestries beside Odysseus and Penelope is a picture of Scylla. At first this seems meaningless, but if you think about it closely, that’s probably why Odysseus knew about Scylla. My guess is that Odysseus knew about Scylla from that, but the men didn’t, so that’s why none of them knew they were being sacrificed.

OMG THE HIGH FIVE ODYSSEUS NEVER GOT IN 'WARRIOR OF THE MIND', MY HEART!!! Athena understood that THAT was where she did wrong with Odyseesus -- he wanted them to be BESTEST OF FRIENDS and she closed her heart to him. And now she knows that this is where she can make sure it ends differently with Telemachus, because he reminds her so much of his father. I swear I teared up in this one!
I love this, Gigi! Athena is being so vulnerable and opening up to Telemachus but isn't sure about what she's doing. But when her owl lands on Telemachus' shoulder, you can see she takes that as a sign that she's on the right path, and she truly opens her heart to him.

Telemachus knows Athena is talking about his dad (watch him when Athena is looking at the portrait of him and his parents, he figures it out!) but he still doesn't know who that *is*.
In the original song Telemachus doesn't know who Athena is talking about, so the line is very straightforward; he doesn't know the identity of Athena's friend. But in this adaptation Telemachus is talking about identity in a similar way to the prophet in It's No Longer You. (Thematically consistent!)
Telemachus knows the identity of Athena's friend, but he doesn't know the *person*. He doesn't know who he is, or what he's like.
And the little awkward 'hand on the back of his neck' thing conveys this so well!
I imagine he'd do the same movement in Legendary at "Cause I'm stuck with your stories, but no clue who you are." as well, to reinforce that he does it when he's thinking about not knowing his dad.

I really like how for the opening part of the song, Athena continues to keep emotion out of her face, but then changes once Telemachus gives his response, it’s like she’s still trying to keep her calm facade.

thirdly, the little details make SO MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE!! (the flashbacks, athena having to duck under the balcony ceiling, the humanity in athena's body language, the playfulness in how they interact-just don't mind me bawling in the corner, please)

This song actually makes me cry so much 😭 Athena acknowledging that Ody WAS her friend, Athena being Telegraphs friend and high-fiving him, therefore not repeating the mistakes that led to her fall out with Odysseus. Her going back to Odysseus’ riff, which she stopped doing at the end of My Goodbye, and then Telescope ADDING his own notes to the riff 😭

The details of her having to duck in the doorway is so good. The fall and catch. The emotion of the characters. The size difference is fantastic and the gentle high five. Ah, I’m dying for this. This is fantastic.

Your animatics are the reason Telemachus is my favorite Epic character! They add so much to his character and it literally rips my heart out in the best way possible
Oh this is so so lovely, I feel so happy and moved and happy relieved and also a bit maternal watching this. I love the way you animate characters moving, and your camera sweeps as they move which doesn’t seem easy at all. And the way that Telemachus was walking along the balcony edge made me think of Odysseus walking along the boat’s edge in Suffering, and I love how you create this through line of emotional payoff and parallels throughout your animatics. I love love love your vision, which you executed brilliantly, and I know I always comment on this but your Telemachus is so so dear to me, I get so excited to see him in your work. I love this so much. Thank you for sharing!!
2:06 I just realized the hand Telemachus holds up changes 😅He puts his right hand up first, it's his left hand in the next shot when we're facing Athena, and then it goes back to his right hand for the high-five. No shade or anything, I just thought I was going crazy for a second 😂
Don't worry. I noticed the same in There Are Other Ways, when Penelope reaches for Ody flashback. I had a heart attack trying to make sense of the hand. 😅

Watching these always makes me feel so creative. This musical has no theater to it, and yet the Fandom has brought every song and moment from it to life in each of their own ways. It's such a beautiful thing to see all of these creatives pouring their heart out into a mutual interest.
Your design of Athena has got to be my absolute favourite. Every other ones I've seen suffer from ridiculous bikini armour, mini skirt, high heels syndrome.
