Heads up everyone, this is how you paint watercolor flowers! What I just watched is more like a free watercolor painting class than just a flower painting tutorial. Absolutely stunning work, a great lesson in the value of layering and I learned so much! Thank you for this amazing Hibiscus painting!
This may be the nicest comment I have ever received! Thank you-I’m so glad you enjoyed the tutorial and found it helpful! It is one of my favorites and your comment means a lot to me
Your paintings are always so beautiful! I really appreciate your thinking and process, it’s very helpful! I LOVE the bumblebee!!! I know putting together tutorials is a lot of work, but we all appreciate your efforts and that you are sharing your amazing talent! Hope you and your family are well!!
Thank you so much for saying that! It IS very time consuming and difficult-especially as I prepare for maternity leave and hope to schedule out at least one video a month while I'm gone (as usual)... and then trying to share MORE videos than usual while everyone is at home! Trying to help but it's definitely overwhelming at times and just so so nice to hear someone who appreciates it rather than just "expecting" it! So thank you for that!
I've been doing small watercolors of just single items. Watching your video really makes me want to try a bigger composition. Thank you so much for sharing!
Your art is so soothing. The colors are very muted and you seem to be the ONLY UA-camr that’s seen real southern magnolias! Why do people paint them hot, hibiscus pink? Lol! My property has many magnolias and these look similar enough. I’m returning to my previous YT eventually (if health allows) and I will paint one with the special ‘find’ that is inside many magnolias.
Renee I do a screen shot of her sketch. I edit out all From the screen shot except the picture. I do this on my iPad but can be done on a smart phone. Then I print it. Mine came out light so I traced over it to make it darker. I tape the picture on my sliding glass door, tape the watercolor paper on top. I open the door and shine a very bright flashlight behind the picture with my left hand and trace with my right. I can draw but am lazy. Works for me.
Renee: I created the composition myself. It's from a collection of photos of different hibiscus flowers. I don't include a copy of my drawing because I want to equip YOU with the knowledge and tools that you need to create whatever you want. If I give you a "coloring page" (or you steal it), then you won't grow! The best way to grow in your painting? Work on your drawing!
Great catch, you are so right!! I need to fix that label! Unfortunately that means that all of my videos are labeled wrong because i just updated the links, haha! Oh well!
Blushed Design 🤗. I didn’t know if you knew and figured you might like to know. I’m a color/pigment nerd. I like your palette color choices. I used to have Rhodonite Genuine in my palette as an muted pink, but it didn’t rewet well, so I gave it away.
Beautiful painting! I just love your style! Can’t wait to check out your other stuff! Very informative, and moved at a good pace. Not criticizing at all, just trying to be helpful here...but throughout you painting when you moved your hand off screen the lighting got darker and then would lighten up when you brought your hand back. Hope that makes sense. It was as if someone in the background was turning on and off a light switch. I think it was the camera trying to adjust. Anyway, I am so glad I found you, and can’t wait to see more! I’m a retired graphic artist, and want to get back into watercolor painting...it’s been years. Would love to see more of your wonderful florals. Thank you for sharing your talent!
Yes, I have seen it and understand the frustration. I would love to invest in better quality equipment for these tutorials, but then I can’t afford to keep them “free” on UA-cam, if that makes sense. I am currently just using my phone, which is “free” to use as a video recording device as well as free editing software. If my costs are low, I can continue to offer these online tutorials. Glad you found the tutorial helpful! 🥰
Blushed Design No worries at all! I fully regret saying anything about it! You do beautiful work, and I can only imagine how much time and energy it takes to make one of these tutorials. Your work is stunning. Thank you so much for sharing your art!❤️
Don’t regret it! I see it too and it’s frustrating. I wish I could do everything “right”, but it’s still fun and I love being able to share on this platform ☺️ someday, if UA-cam starts bringing in money to justify the costs, I hope to invest in better equipment
I really like the video, I watched it very carefully as I'm a beginner on this, and it really helped me. It would be great if you can share the drawing then we can download it and use it to practice it. Thanks!
So glad it was helpful!! It will actually help you improve even more if you practice the drawing as well! It helps you understand the way the petals move and fold. If you need help with your drawing, you can take my free mini drawing course: www.blusheddesign.com/flower-drawing
Very beautiful. I have been struggling with how to add ruffles/petal edge details and you make it look so easy. I usually end up with too many and them & not going in the right direction even though I try to have them follow the shape of the petal. Some petals seem to have them all curving in the same direction and others have a mix or direction (I cant explain it properly), so it confuses me a lot as to how to approach each petal on different flowers. p.s. I dont mean in your painting....meaning in general. thanks for a wonderful video.
If you’re consistently struggling, the best thing you can do is work on your drawing! Drawing helps us to see and understand where painting requires an additional level of understanding. Practicing and blocking in the shadows and shapes you see will help you grow a ton in your painting
Hi! I don’t offer the outline for this piece because I sell this one, but the tips and shadows will apply to other hibiscus / rose of Sharon drawings as well!
This was really informative and beautiful - thank you! Do you think you could adjust what I think is the white balance/brightness on your camera to be manual/static? Every time your hand left the screen (which was a lot) the image darkened and every time you returned it lightened. It created a constant flickering/strobe effect that made this a bit hard to watch... and I want to watch more!
Hello! Yes, I am aware of the problem ☺️ it happens if the paint palette isn’t in the shot, but it largely has to do with the fact that I film on my phone. It’s how I keep costs down and am able to provide this content for free (YT doesn’t pay my bills, but I enjoy teaching so I do it anyway!). Someday it would be great to upgrade to a better camera but until then, this is the price we “pay” for free tutorials 🤷🏼♀️ if that makes sense. Sorry about that!
@@katrinacrouch It's a shame our phones don''t focus all that well. When you're dealing with a mostly white background, it can help to keep a darker object in the frame such as a tube of paint or a paint brush. This way the phone isn't continuing to refocus while you move your hand. Hope this helps with your amazing tutorials!
Allô, I was wondering if you have the link to the drawing of the hibiscus? I really appreciate and love your tutorial and looking forward to follow your work either on You Tube or other media. Thank you😊
It was from multiple photos actually! Which is why I struggled a little bit to get the shading and color right-you should be able to follow the general idea with any hibiscus photo!
I don’t sell the pencil sketches-but I DO teach drawing lessons with my free art challenge! My mission is to teach you and other artists how to create your own artwork, not to just live in a shadow, being trapped in the limit of my work :-) Www.BlushedDesign.com/flower-drawing
Yes, I always allow the paint to fully dry in between layers/passes of paint. Some people will use hair dryers to speed up the process but I have 3 boys under 4 so it happens naturally ;)
There isn’t a single reference photo for this design because I pulled from multiple pictures to create a unique composition. Sorry, that’s why I don’t often show my more complex designs in tutorials

BTW loved the painting 😍..
Trying for one every 2 weeks during quarantine! But I’m also trying to get ready for my maternity leave so it’s a ton of extra right now, haha!
@@katrinacrouch of course be safe ☺️
When you do the shading of the petals do you do it wet on dry ? Loved the class. Thank you so much.
Wet on dry - or, more accurate: damp on dry! Don’t add too much water or you risk re-activating the color underneath
