Bridesmaids is probably the best comedy ever made. That film deserved Oscars for writing and acting. It requires multiple watches. It never fails to uplift, inspire, entertain in all kinds of ways. Just brilliant and his character is particularly endearing. I am still waiting for anything as good as Bridesmaids 13 years later.
McCarthy got an acting nomination for supporting actress (which is practically unheard of for a comedy). Comedies are not as decorated at the Oscars it's very rare for them get nominations.
@@xKarenWalkerx true but this one deserved every award. It’s everything one wants a great film to be, comedy or not. Kristen Wiig deserved an Oscar for it, that plane scene alone is truly one of the most hilarious scenes and it’s thanks to her. Her meltdown at the baby shower is totally Oscar worthy too. Melissa was the obvious scene stealing character but Kristen is an acting genius.
Juggling ridiculous over the top comedy with real serious emotions is the hardest thing to achieve. And it was done so brilliantly here. Also the dynamics with her mum and commentary on being single as an adult is just absolutely brilliant and not tackled so much in movies. The only moments I would scratch are the ones with Rebel Wilson and her brother which didn’t function as well as the rest imo.
@@alexd1121 Melissa was nominated mostly for the scene of her getting real with Kristen Wiig's character. She was dramatic in that scene. The rest of the movie is very funny but comedy in and of itself lacks depth that drama has. They're different genres. Drama just tends to have the acting styles that are praised by the Academy. Golden Globes are different, it's isn't that high of a standard and crowd favorites tend to be nominated. Bridesmaids was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Picture (Musical or Comedy).
And, in fact, Kristen was nominated for the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. But she lost to Woody Allen...a tremendous feat for a Comedy at the Oscars...
@@xKarenWalkerx oh wow! I had no recollection of the film being nominated for best screenplay! Totally deserving but I’m glad Woody Allen won. He’s a genius as well. I know the drill about pre conceived notions on comedy vs drama but good comedy is infinitely harder to craft which is why it soars when it hits the right spots. These SNL guys often go for over the top or screwball all the way but this film was just perfectly its own thing not falling for any pre conceived notions or expectations of what genre it should be boxed into which also explains why many people don’t know the film outside of the US and non English speaking countries as it doesn’t translate well and got advertised as something in the lines of The Hangover when it’s got real dramatic elements as well and more universal appeal to be promoted. It’s tough being an original in certain ways and that film is just that. It was a resounding success though and will continue to shine through time.
@@alexd1121 I think it's mostly that comedy in its style, doesn't get deep enough, but that's kind of the point. It was really funny and it wouldn't have been if it was also very deep and sad. The surface level of comdey is what makes it funny. Humour, timing of courses, but its nature is not as deep and a bit shallow. That doesn't mean it's not well written or a great film...But good on the Academy for recognizing Melissa's scene and not disregarding it for being a comedy.
