CR Scan Otter Vs Raptor - Head Shot Comparision

  • I've done 2 more head shot scan of my in-law on both Otter and Raptor's NIR with the new CR Scan 3.2.14
    Here's what I found.
Dual scan technic works great with Otter. Body mode has much bigger detection area and it locks on shoulder while scanning the head. This makes it tracks very well. Then I use face mode to scan higher detail of the face then merge them together.
New software 3.2.14 merging has a lot of improvement.
Meshing also improve but the result is too soft for my liking.
Lasso selection tool has some bug; it doesn't show where pointer has been moved.
Otter has higher detail point cloud than Raptor, but after meshing, they look very similar.
Otter's by far the best scanner in the market for head shot scan. Average user should be able to scan effortlessly.
You really need to print this with SLA printer to reveal all the detail.

Thank you Payo for your tests. I've just bought an Otter and I'm very satisfied for the scanning results. I use your videos as tutorial to learn how to use my scanner. Thank you again. Enrico

Easily my favorite video so far.😂
The level that both the otter and raptor can 3d scan at, definitely qualifies as “Uncanny Valley” freak out! 😂😂😂
The uncanny valley (Japanese: 不気味の谷, Hepburn: bukimi no tani) effect is a hypothesized psychological and aesthetic relation between an object's degree of resemblance to a human being and the emotional response to the object.

One thing I’ve got to say is, please turn off the graphics card real-time view port rendering when using screen capture.
That way there is no delay in rendering the screen view.
I don’t think the two play nice, as the output is really stippled.

Could you use a netted veil with tracking dots at the joins, for a more accurate scan?

One thing, doing head scan in marker mode. It won't activate hair algorithm. It will try to scan hair as an object which's too small to detect.

Amazing video, thank you very much for your work, super informative. Do you think ferret could pick up hair as otter in body mode? Low resolution would be enough

Otter is better for scanning people. Even Creality says that. The Raptor was designed more for scanning things like parts with higher precision dimensional precision.
For typical hobby type stuff the difference in precision isn't likely to be noticeable, let alone necessary. The blue laser mode is really cool, but the marker requirement to use it can be annoying.
Unless you are thinking of getting into engineering level quality stuff Payo is right. The otter is probably the better buy for you.

I bought the Raptor for reverse engineering parts or to add modifications to it. It can scan edges sharper, picks up really small details like pins on a lid of a coffee machine and it can scan deeper into holes and cavities.

Sorry for my English.....German i can better 😅
Ok then is the Raptor better for parts to scan and smal parts Technik parts?....

    • @christopherstephens2699
      @christopherstephens2699 4 місяці тому +1

@@TOYSrROYS Yeah, that's what the Raptor was designed for. It has a smaller minimum part size than the Otter and can scan with greater accuracy with the laser. You're talking down into the hundredths of millimeters kinds of differences, which is why I said it won't make a difference to most people.
The Raptor is phenomenal with miniatures too. It just isn't as good with living subjects.

I think the head shape would be different with the veil on. I did try with swimming cap for short hair person, then add the hair later on in Blender, this will maintain skull shape.
and yes, I don't think older women would be happy to see the scanning result, wrinkles they don't see in the mirror just pop out in the scan.

@@stevesloan6775 In marker mode, the net has to cover the whole head including the face. I think it will cast spot shadow.

Do you know if there are big improvements in the performance of the raptor with the software updates they bring out? I know the raptor is pretty new and just bought one ( waiting on delivery). I do a lot of 3d cad work and hope.this will save me time on reverse engineering. Hope I made the right choice. It is tripple the price of the otter So hope it is more capable.

I think the Raptor has been the fastest (50 FPS) scanner even on the early version of the software. They have improved the performance on the laptop's GPU, now I can scan at full speed on battery.
