None of my family would do anything to help the real me, so they’re not about to help the AI me.
We have been seeing this happen wihtext messages for a while but the AI voice gen is a nasty new twist.

My entire family has set up a "password" that acts like a two set verification system. We made it a word in a foreign language for extra security. If my granddaughter calls up and she does not have the special password....I know it is a scammer. So far we have not needed to use it but it is set in place BEFORE, not after we become victims.

If you know someone but don't have a password you can ask them something only they would know. But someone digging hard enough could find something like the name of your childhood pet.

Setup with your family members to ask/answer a code word to make sure they are who they are.
I’m old but all my children already know, don’t bother calling Dad unless you have enough proof you need it. A night in jail WOULD NOT DO IT. I love my kids but EVERY decision has consequences, in the military the teaching is simple, anything you do can get you killed, even doing nothing.

Good points! Before Ai voice tricks, the scam worked anyway, because in the heat of the moment anyone on the phone sounds like a grandchild to a worried grandparent!
The real remedy to stop phone number spoofing is not hard for phone companies to do-but legislators refuse to make them do it; they’re all making money from letting these fraudsters run wild!

Yeah, I noticed the AI voice in the scam to your wife was a bit off with the voice tone and pauses. This hasn't happened to me yet, but I wouldn't be fooled because if it was my spouse, child, etc. calling me and then putting on a police officer, I'd be questioning why the officer needs me to give their personal information when they should have it already.
Still, this is concerning because this technology can only get better if anything isn't done about it.
If I called you on a random 3am and woke you up from your deep sleep, its a very different experience than watching this in the nice comfrot of your home/ car/ computer/ phone.
You clicked on a video that already told your brain "don't answer" so you already have a "biase".
These scams work because they are unexecpted and often catch people in situations when they are not focused.
And as you said, AI is getting better and better, so these are going to get worse.

Excellent presentation. I listen for breathing sounds to identify AI. I would ask for someone to breath as a test if it's person to AI person. The password is a great idea.

Another thing to do would be to try asking the person on the other end that you believe to be a relative, a personal and obvious question that you know for a fact they would know the answer to. If they can't answer the question or if they avoid the question than you know it's not them.
true - the problem is that they make up a situation where you don't get to talk to your relative. So you hear their voice for 30 seconds and then the "doctor" or the "police" or the "manager" takes over and they make up a story of why your reletive can't talk. I have worked with someone who got one of these calls from the Border Security. They heard their child's voice and the "police" said they can't talk anymore as they are in a holding cell.

I think this has already happened to me and the person is calling and texting people and verbally abusing them.. I don't know how to stop it...
So glad my kids all have a code word to help with verification, sad we have to do this but any extra step can help in serious situations.

How do you know that you can trust these data deletion services? They promise to do all these things, but this is the problem, isn't it? You're handing your trust entirely to another company that, ironically, also wants your personal information for itself. I wouldn't mind having a service like this, but is today's video sponser transparent? Has it been audited to check that it is really doing everything it promises? Can we be sure that it doesn't take the data I want deleting, get everybody else to delete it, then go about selling the information for itself? These might all seem like silly questions, but if you're to trust a company like this, I really think it's imperative that we know these things.

I have seen it in a "60 Minutes" clip. Everyone's voices CAN BE spoofed, as said by the ethical hacker, who was featured in that clip. That is why you should NOT leave your social media accounts wide open to the world to see. Only your inner circle who you know really well can.
My friends and family have only one option to contact me. They must provide me a code. If not, I do not accept texts. If I answer a call, they must immediately give me a 4+ digit code
Yeah, already told my parents some years ago to just ignore any calls if someone claims to have me kidnapped and threathen to kill me...."just kill him, good riddance" and hang up 😆 And now same with the voice cloning...I'll never get myself into such troubles

How many data brokers do they work with? I use Aura right now but I could be persuaded to change
Just to be clear, they don't work with any data brokers. They are effectively your agent and they run through all their websites and look for your info to get it removed. What I also like is that if I find my info somewhere, I can add it to their list and they get to work on it.
Scary stuff. Wonder if there is an app to detect AI voices in calls? I see there is software for desktops to detect AI voices.

Theres a way to beat the scumbag scammers...so simple and one I have found effective if you really know the caller. AI cant predict / react to events only the genuine caller would know going on. Also if in doubt ask about something only you and ther genuine caller knows

As much as I anticipate the potential of AIs, it is also terrifying to understand that AIs do not filter every information unless being forced by their programmers. Im sure AI will get better, but even with voice cloning many of them speak artificially. Wrong cadence, incorrect pronounciation or missing charistics of family member's inflection. Too many UA-cam narrations are obviously AI.
