Hi! Uncle Bumpy again! I know a question that's been on your mind and nagging you for years is, 'What are all those button holes doing on the KEY Bib Overall....on the bib?'
There are three of them. There's one right here, and there are two right here. What are they used for? Well, this top one is for the end of a watch fob, and in the good old days most people wore pocket watches. Didn't have these jobs around (wrist watches). So what they would do with a bib overall is they would attach their pocket watch to a watch fob, and the end of the watch fob went right through this hole and attached it to the bib overall. Then there was a piece of leather or fancy chain, or in some places just a string, that attached to the end of the watch. The watch would then go right in this pocket right here. There's a nice sized pocket in here. Slip that in there and the watch falls down into the pocket. So that's what this button hole is for.
The other two button holes are for pencils. Pretty obvious with this pencil....I've got it in there. But you're saying: "What's that one on the bottom for? Who would put a pencil in like that? Well, you wouldn't put a pencil like this in there, but back in depression era, and back when times were tough, a lot of the guys who wore these were carpenters or had to mark things when they were cutting and they wore their pencils down to just a little nubbins like that! So those went in here. You have this little nubbins sticking up out of there and the bigger pencils went in there.
Back in those days the carpenters didn't use pencils like this because they always broke! They use pencils that look like this. You sharpen these with a knife. It's got a big piece of lead in it and that would go down in here.
I started out selling Oshkosh B'Gosh bib overalls and I remember that many times with a promotion we'd be giving these pencils away. One pencil with every pair of bib overalls your bought. That was a pretty valuable deal to those carpenters and a lot of the workers back then who had to mark things. If you're going to use this kind of a pencil today you actually need to open up this eyelet a little bit and make the button hole a little bit bigger. There's room there to do that.
OK, what are some of the other things you can use those for? Well some of you might have a specific small tool that you use all the time in your work. I'm just going to use this (small scissors)! Some fellas have little clippers or little scissors that they use, but those would hold that very nicely. So if you've got some other tool or something that you need to use all the time, those eyelets or buttonholes just might do the trick for you.
So I'm Uncle Bumpy! I don't know how many of you remember the Oshkosh B'Gosh Bib Overalls, but like I say, that's when I started out selling. Actually, the son of the man that owned Oshkosh B'Gosh, was the one that started the KEY brand so it's kind of all in the family anyway.
Well, be sure to sign up down below, comment, and get all kinds of interesting suggestions. There's some more good stuff over there you can click on!

I'm Uncle Bumpy and we hope that you will wear your KEY Bib Overall in Safety and Good Health!
Thank you very much! Bye-Bye!

I've been a sheetmetal worker for a little over 11 years now and I prefer bibs to pants. When working a belt can feel like a tourniquet. But in my short time being in the trade, I have always wondered what that was. I even ask an older gentleman about it last week and he didn't know. Now I can finally sleep at night.
Thanks my favorite uncle.
Thank you for supporting KEY Apparel!
My husband got his first pair, love it, but he asked what the buttonholes were for so thanks Uncle Bumpy so much. I can now tell him.
Thank you so much! I just got my first pair of Liberty Bibs and could not figure out what the button holes and side pocket were for. You learn something new everyday!
Ive always wondered. You cleared it up for me! Thank you sir!
Thank you! I was putting on my Libertys this morning and decided to search for the answer to this very question! Good to know. Now I kinda want a pocket watch!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks I've been wearing bibs since I was a toddler and never knew.
Nice tid bit if info about Key being the spawn of Osch Kosch. Did not know that.
This the reason why love my key overalls
I just bought key overalls on 12/24/2021 from the coastal farm and ranch store redmond oregon
I work with a couple of old timers and I’m thinking about switching to bibs great information
Go for it!
I just started wearing overalls again. They're a really excellent choice for the ample man.
Thanks Uncle!
Thank you I was losing sleep trying to figure them out.
These are the best every day summer overalls. This specific model. They've changed my life.
I remember them. There used to be a lot of overall manufacturers. Now I think they only make children's overalls. Here where I'm from low backs used to be the overalls everyone wanted. I wore out a bunch of Pointers before I ever got a pair of high backs.
Probably already covered in a different video.
But I'm sure some people are wondering about the small pocket at the top of the right-hand front pocket.
As well as the twin pockets on the right leg.😎
I know what they are for.
But some people don't.
Earned a subscriber. I knew about the pocket watch, but thought all the others couldn't be for the same thing. Many thanks.
You are welcome. There is a lot of history and functionality with bib overalls.
Honestly I use the first button hole for ear protection. I roll up my ear plugs and stuff them in the hole. When they expand they hold firm and won't get lost. Way better than letting them get dirty in the bottom of a pocket or constantly losing them.
Wojac...My Apologies, but I overlooked your message a few months ago. When I saw what you use one of the holes for, I just had to get that info out to other Bib Overall wearers. GREAT IDEA! Thanks for sharing. Uncle Bumpy
I just bought my first pair of overalls and couldn't figure this out. Thanks so much!
There was Three abd four button for the waists . We had to get them from August Ga.
Hi, thank you for the great information on the ways to use the button holes. I recently found what seem to be an older pair of key overalls and was curious if you knew what era they used the green thread accents around the buttonholes. I couldn't find too many references online so any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Hello Javier: Not totally sure, but it seems to me the green thread ended about 2005. I know there was some confusion among customers because the replacement thread was a black or deep navy color and some folks thought the button holes were unfinished or only partially completed.
Thanks so much for your very informative overview of a product that I’ve worn since I was 16 years old and still do to this day. They don’t do anything for the looks of my butt, but that’s not why I’ve always worn them. Now I’ve got to get a pocket watch and a good fob. 👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Very helpful. Thanks.
Small pocket also used to hold your “ bullet” pencil. But, that would be a whole other video
Thanks brother good video
I’ve never owned a pair of overalls. As I have gotten older they are appealing to me.
Well...now is the time to get a pair! Lots of storage space for goodies.
I still have my grandads oshkosh bgosh. I would love to find a vintage adult pair
My sister and I just bought our first pair of matching bibs. Thank you for settling our argument about the buttonhole. We were both wrong. We are wondering if the pocket under the hammer thingamajig is for the handle of the hammer?
Good Question! But, Nope....you don't want to use that pocket for the hammer handle. The hammer handle has to be unrestrained and hang down when you walk and move your leg. Otherwise when you bend your legs, or go up and down a ladder or stairs it can bind or pinch your leg. Also, if you put the hammer handle in that pocket and you lift your leg high enough, the hammer could slide out. Enjoy your bibs!
@@factorydirectshippers for the life of me, I don't know what "pocket" you are talking about.🤔
I have been wearing Key denim overalls daily for a couple of decades.
Every pair that I have ever had......
They have two pockets on the right leg, which I have always called "pliers pockets".
And then, on the left leg, is the hammer loop.
But there is no pocket under, or lower, the hammer loop.🤔🤔
Roundhouse overalls are made in Shawnee Oklahoma.
lol been wearing overalls for years and i finally know
Those pencil holes... for me, I carry a metal bodied pen instead. So I slip the pen through the top hole, then back out of the bottom hole. The clip on the pen keeps the pen from moving.
Very interesting. Thanks
Glad you think so!
Wore the Oshkosh bibs all through Jr high school and high school wouldn't wear anything else but bib overalls even to this day.
Hi Vernon! You started out wearing the same brand I did...OshKosh. We had a store about 60 miles from the factory in OshKosh, Wisconsin. When we first started a mail order catalog in 1982, we grew to be the largest single shipper of OshKosh garments in the country. It was a sad day when OshKosh B'Gosh got out of the work wear business. Stay well....and Merry Christmas! Uncle Bumpy
Used to wear Oshkosh. Bibs but now key hickory stripe every day I miss the white and blue stretchable straps shows my age I guess
I still carry a pocket watch and hook it to my bibs. As a blacksmith and welder, wearing a wristwatch is a hazard in multiple ways. My favorite brand of overalls however, just did away with all the models of overalls with watch holes in the bibs. Do yall sell insulated overalls as well?
Hello Musashi: As a welder and blacksmith these two bibs might be right down your alley! Go to this webpage: www.lapcofrworkwear.com/cat/5002-bib-overalls The denim bib is unlined but made of heavy flame resistant denim; the insulated bib overall is warm and wind resistant...BOTH have the Watch Fob Hole at the top of the bib. Use the Coupon Code: UNCLEBUMPY at checkout for $5 off the shipping. Hope this is helpful. Stay Safe and Warm. Uncle Bumpy
@@factorydirectshippers much obliged, kind regards to you and yours.
Now I've got a pocket watch to put in that pocket
Never knew what the button holes were for.
I used to wear the Oshkosh herringbone carpenter overalls. I don't think you can buy them anymore.
Yes. OshKosh quite making those in the early 90's...B'Gosh!
Do you wear these over pants or are they like your pants
The majority of folks wear Bib Overalls as their pants. However, some folks who prefer to wear jeans or dungarees, sometimes keep a pair of Bib Overalls handy to step into and wear over the jeans for dirty environments, to keep the jeans clean. If worn in this manner, the waist size should be 2" to 4" larger than the jean size. Hope this is helpful! Uncle Bumpy.
I have wore Key overalls since the 1970s. They were superior work clothes when they were made in Kansas. Their quality suffered when they move to south America. They would shrink four sizes. I don't know where they are made now. I started wearing roundhouse overalls when the went to zippers on Key. So sad the company did not want to pay American union wages. Many have jump on the China bandwagon, with massive supply chain problems are going under. Those who move their manufacturing back to U.S.A. will survive. I would pay five dollars more for a pair of overalls made in Kansas.
According to the tag in every pair of Key Imperials that I currently own......some brand new, some a couple of years old......it appears that they are currently being made in Mexico.
You mentioned a shrinking problem.
I have been wearing this brand for a couple of decades, and have never had a pair shrink even a tiny bit.
Sorry to hear that you have.
The only ones that I have had shrink, were a couple of pairs of Liberty brand overalls, that family members gave me for Christmas a few years ago.
He would pay $5 more but it will cost the company $10 more to make them in Kansas. Mike never was very good at math

Why do they make kids Oshkosh overalls but not adult?? and Where are you located? Thanks
About 1995 OshKosh stopped making adult work wear, but continued making fashion garments for children, youth, teen and some adult. At that time the work wear was only about 7% of the total production, so OshKosh decided to drop it and fully focus on fashion garments. A few years later OshKosh sold the fashion business to Carters, a children's wear company. Carters discontinued the adult fashion items and later the teen garments. I think you can only get garments with the OshKosh label in sizes 7 and below now? We are located near La Valle, Wisconsin, which is north of Madison and about 25 miles west of the Wisconsin Dells. Our company is completely an online business and we do not operate a retail location anymore. When we had a retail location, we also published a paper catalog of OshKosh work wear. We were told by OshKosh that we were their largest mail order shipper in the country. We were truly saddened when they quit work wear. We mailed a lot of OshKosh B'Gosh bib overalls and dungarees to a lot of hard working people! Brooks...Thank you for your interest! Uncle Bumpy
Thank you for the explanation
Do. you still have a mail-order business and if so what all do you sale
I was wondering where I was going to keep my watch
Good old days I still wear pocket watches I can't wear a wrist watch cuz it gets broke.
I remember Oshkosh
Yes. Everyone who wore 'em loved 'em - men, women and kids. Folks loved to say: Yup...I wear OshKosh....B'Gosh!
I do believe Liberty overalls are better they got better pockets but thanks anyway.
What happened to key overalls the imperial used to be the best overall on the market, now they are cut for elephant legs, they use a cheap zipper instead of buttons for the fly, the hardware on the straps is noticably cheaper, they quit doing the contrast stitching around the bottom holes, and they no longer double line the bottom of the pockets, they charge more to buy a product that is made by third world labor for less money. Screw them I'll buy Round house or Five Brothers same money for a better product.
