  • This video compares two foil kites: The Flysurfer Soul and the Ozone Hyperlink. Comparing/Contrasting through a weighted point system to help you make the decision of which kite is right for you. This is episode 2 and addresses Launch/Land, and performance on a Hydrofoil & Twin Tip. Episode 1 finished with the Hyperlink in the lead, but this video is dealing with performance for the new foil kite flyer and intermediate hydrofoiler. Many things will come into play when deciding to purchase either of these kites. They are both truly remarkable beasts on the water, but this video series is to educate you as much as possible before making such a large financial commitment.

    Thanks for the detailed review. As an ‘evolving, timid, scared, weaksauce foiler whose currently adapting from 20 knot plus twin tipping in Australia to 10-12 knt foiling in Thailand its right on the money for content and detail

    Fantastic review finally the section about how they fly. Love the details about kite stability. For advanced kiters, they also like the stability, because advanced kiters are more aggressive and appreciate being able to get closer to the limit. I've noticed the soul to be about 2m more powerful than an LEI like you said. I also noticed my friend who has a soul boosting sky high. Soul wins! And now for some stories about my deep water packdowns: I have done a lot of deep water packdowns and swims. There is one critical component that matters more than anything and no it's not the center zipper, it's not this or that valve. The single most critical component is: Will the foil take on water? There are a few ways for a foil to take on water when you are packing down. One way is for the foil to just get soaked in the frabric. You don't want this. The second way is for the kite to gulp water in through the air intakes. The best way to avoid this is if the kite itself stays relatively inflated. As long as the kite is inflated and doesn't loose air, it's difficult for the water to get in because the kite sits high on the water. As soon as the fabric gets soaked or the kite starts to deflate the air intake valves start to ride lower in the water and that's when the water can gush into the kite and suddenly there's 1,000 pounds of water inside your kite and it will take you hours to push all the water out. A big deflate zipper isn't a lot of help. You want the kite to say completely inflated the entire time while you packdown. So you get skunked out in the water, the kite lays on the water, you spend about 5 minutes trying to relaunch and then give up. Spool the lines up and get to the kite. Now you start wrapping the kite up from one end to the other. If the kite never takes on water the entire time you pack down, you will have a nice tidy bundle and an easy swim in. During the packdown stage a lot of times, I don't even open a zipper the main reason being that I'm terrified of water getting into the kite and the higher up that kite sits the less likely water is going to go into the intake. When I do unzip a zipper, it's never the center, because water can easily get inside the kite from the center zipper. I always unzip at either the right or left end, and then roll up from the opposite end of the kite. this way the kite has air the entire time you are rolling it up. When everything goes correctly swimming back is fine. If however, water gets into the kite you can spend hours on the water swimming in and another hour on shore getting the rest of the water out of the kite, having to be careful not to tear any cells. By far, I mean by far the kite which I have had the best luck with in swims is a kite that never takes on water and has tiny zippers. best review of the year, and the one I have anticipated the most. I think advanced riders also would go for the soul too. Megalooooops. I think the soul 8m in 30 knots will be my choice. Now I just have to save up. It just seems like the soul is going to be more reliable in gnarly conditions.

    I also did the same test but on 9m Hyperlink and 10m Soul. I couldn't agree more with your analysis, except I am a skinny light weight fellow and found too much lift for me on the Soul on transitions, so I chose the Hyperlink. Both kites are brilliant, and get me kiting on the foil in almost no wind ☺

    Great comment. Just got the hyperlink ultralight 12m and find it amazingly smooth and stable to ride but have experienced some difficult launch when not preinflating enough. clearly 2 m2 more than a same size LEI kite. paking very small...

    I appreciate the effort to make the video. The choice of kites to compare should be Chrono V3 and Soul, the Hyperlink is a very different foil kite to the Soul. There are many things you've found to be positives and negatives that with foil kite experience would go the other way or not be an issue at all. All foil kites should have a backstall handle. An Ozone race bar is not an ideal bar to use when you have quite limited experience, they are really designed for racers.

    What's the fabric weight on the 2, I have a old fs s3 with standard fabric and heavier fabric is a big down fall.

    Would you please do a comparison of the Soul and the New Hyperlink V2?

    You keep the deep flying kite longer at 12 which is better for transitions and foot switch for beginners if you take advantage of it.

    What did you find the wind range of the 12m soul for riding a foil and that of twintip. I figure the 12m soul will be become a handful at some point with a foil but good fun on a tt. What’s your weight? Thanks

      @TheOKKiteboarder  5 років тому

      I weigh 160lbs. I currently ride the 12m Soul in conditions of 8-18mph on a foil.

    This video is a great listen, however foil kites have been around way longer then the hydrofoil boards. Peter Lynn ARC PHANTOM GORILLA BOMBA along with Flysurfer SPEED v1 v2 v3,PSYCHO PULSE many many more were with us from the late 90's. Yes the PL were still foil but without the full canopy bridle.
    Price difference in the 12m models is only around £150-£200 (FS more expensive) in the UK. Could be enough to make a purchasing difference. Though I think more discount can offered under the Ozone line.
    I flew the 15m SOUL back to back with a 15m Chrono3, as expected the Chrono3 well out performed the SOUL, but the Chrono3 comes in around £300 more than a SOUL. The Ch3 doesn't have a 12m, but an 11 and 13, I priced this on the 11m.
    The jumping and amplitude on the Chrono3 was way more savage on the Chrono, but a lot more floaty on the SOUL.
    SOUL lost on overall speed and Upwind ability. Maybe unfair comparing the SOUL to the Chrono3, maybe Chrono3 Vs Sonic FR2?
    The SOUL gave me more of an intuitive feel over the Chrono3, better bar feedback.
    I also tried the 12m SOUL once, after spending a couple of hours under my 13m Chrono3, wow it just felt like someone had turned the wind off :)

      I don't think the soul is competing with the other foil kites, both it and the hyperlink are aimed at kiters who want to replace their tube kites with foils and need the stabiilty of a tube kite but not the performance.

    I was looking at the DLab by Duotone but its insanely priced. The new V2 Ozone is supposed to be waterproof and lighter so im moving towards that. I like this review.

    Video is better than OK ;) 👍. Would be interested in hearing what Greenhat said to improve your boosting with hyperlink, or that style kite ?

    • @TheOKKiteboarder
      @TheOKKiteboarder  5 років тому +1

      thx dpwild328. Most of the tips were about flying the kite that sits deeper in the window for jumping. Much more aggressive steering, not just send overhead and pull bar in with the Soul. Of course this was advice for just my level.

  • @davidl3115
    @davidl3115 5 років тому +6

    how could a kite that sits deeper in the window, and boost less be a better choice for an advanced rider, i just sold a hyperlink for another foil kite for the exact same reasons. lets face it the soul is a better kite hands down for all users.

      Chrono3 superb kites. Flew back to back with SOUL's, think the only Fkysyfer close to Ozone Chrono3 spec is a Sonic2 (maybe). The Hyperlink is Ozones introductory foil water kite, easy to fly, simple to relaunch, stable as a stable. It's almost more like a high profile version of a VYRON if such a kite existed lol

    Great to see a review from a human kiter rather than kite god! So I’m similar (probably less there than you) on the foil… so a soul looks bang on the money to me (if only I had more of that money! EBay here I come)

    Thanks for your videos! I have an Hiperlink 2 years ago, it is very old now. I want buy another kite for foiling. I foil with Moses 91 cm foil six months ago, Just jibe for the moment. But I dont know Which foil kite to buy. Lot Ozone R1 I like it, But think is too much for me, I dont want to race, Just freeride, I kite 3 years ago, 47 yeras old, do not like to do mad things (risk). Wich options do you think can fit me? Ozone Chrono? Soul? Others. Friends said R1 is the Best option, but Is it for me? I am not sure

      Tough to answer. Probably not a racing foil kite from what you have stated. You could go in between and try the Sonic 3?

    Tryed both. Soul behind a competition. Ozon is crap. Zipper on the kite in sandy conditions? Seriously? How long it will last?
    Soul is super stable and not loosing it form even stalling. Ozone is shitty.
