It's great to find information about folks growing hazel nuts in Canada. I'm in Peterborough zone 5a and have 17 hazel bushes. I've been growing since 2013. This year I have a huge crop of nuts on the plants. Some of these are plants I grew from my own seed 2.5 years ago. One of these is producing nuts this year (2021). I'd very much like to connect with other hazel growers in similar Ontario zone to compare notes. I will be contacting Earthgen Tree Nursery to find out more about inoculating hazels for truffles. Thanks for the video, thumbs up and a sub.
I planted 5 bushes last year and started 500 seedlings this year. I do some mushroom cultivation so I’m going to have to experiment with this! I’m growing near Mallorytown and Prescott
@@jdvanallen2907 Biggest challenge with hazels for me is squirrels. They eat every nut before they even start to ripen. Using them for truffles may be a better option. Will you inoculate your seedlings before planting in their permanent locations?
In my region, we produce tons of hazelnuts but noone knows anything about truffles . My question is , is it possible to grow truffles in existing hazelnuts trees?
Hi Mario, great question! I called up earlier this year to find out if there’s any update. They are expecting the first truffle crop this year or in 2022. When I have an update I will put it here:orchardpeople.com/hazelnut-trees-and-truffles/
Found this episode on my google podcast! Great timing as I have my food forest/permaculture plan done and am waiting for spring to plant. Didn't even think about inoculating my trees with truffles. I couldn't find many suppliers online who would do small orders (looking at 14 trees), the ones I found so far are asking for orders of 75 or more. I'll try messaging your guest. Not sure if he could ship to Wisconsin. Thank you for this wonderful program.
HI Heather I'm so pleased you enjoyed the program! If my guest can't sell to you in the US, he might know who can. So good luck with that. And please, if you remember, keep me posted as to how it goes! Good luck with your permaculture garden!
If your plant gets blight or any other disease, it means that there is a mineral deficiency or imbalance, or possibly some other problem. The quality or health of the plant is measured with a refractomer, which determines brix. If the brix is high enough, the plant will be resistant to all diseases.
If you confirm the relationship of the fungi on the roots that is your indicator that you've got a good plant. Guess work is risky if your true aim is truffle.. Especially with just choosing one tree.
cool info; but man i breed precocious hazels, and yes i use mycorrhizae; and they don't produce nuts in 2 years! That's unreasonable. Maybe one cluster lol. Hazel can take shade fine.

Thanks Bill! So glad you liked the video! Your nut orchard sounds amazing. Enjoy the bounty!

Not worth the hassle. Inoculate has its price and youre better off just using saplings because its easier to inoculate them
Lovely interview!🤗💛🤗
So glad it was helpful!
Her voice is so soothing🌰
It would be interesting to see how the experiment went. Are you planning a new video?

Sounds like a NPR broadcast interview
Thank you! I like NPR 😊

Yes!!!! This is so true and the science behind it is fascinating!
How many trees do you need to grow truffles?
Hi Gina, I'm pretty sure just one! But if you want hazelnuts too you'll need a second one of a different variety for successful cross pollination.

Ibwant to partner with you i have where to do it

I think so! Good luck with that!
Tasmanian Truffle industry too
👍
The intro is cringe you need to introduce them before you make them watch and anticipate when you'll introduce them
Just being honest
Thanks for the honest feedback!
susan's hosting is really terrible, she completely deviates from your title and wastes the audience's time.
I’m sorry you feel that way!
