I believe in the Christmas 2023 of RetroFan, Rick Goldschmidt said that a CBS executive heard Suzanne Davisson’s performance in “Miracle on 34th Street” (which CBS broadcast) and they rerecorded the lines either ‘73 or ‘74.
Always been my favorite Christmas special. I still have an old 90s VHS of Frosty that was a Xmas present when I was 5, even though I don't have a VCR anymore. One of the changes I'm not crazy about in the newer releases is when Santa puts the hat back on Frosty's head and the music starts playing slightly earlier than it does in the older versions. That might've been the result on correcting the timing of the sound effect of the hat being placed on Frosty, but I still prefer the older version's music timing when Frosty returns to life. Glad to hear June Foray's original recordings as Karen, even if the redub was more fitting.
Something rather ironic is that in the original DVD of Frosty I own, the" Frosty it is, Frosty the Snowman." Was clearly the kid from the Re-dub, but in the Blu-ray that I currently watch every year, the 1969 voice comes out of him for that part.
Suzanne Davidson's other claim to fame was starring on the CBS Daytime Drama "As the World Turns" as Betsy Stewart during the 70's. Similarly to how she replaced June Foray in Frosty, Suzanne Davidson was replaced on ATWT by Meg Ryan.
I thought the reason ALL ALONG why the child actors were brought in was because either Rankin/Bass or CBS finally noticed that some of the children sounded too old (No offense to June Foray or Paul Frees)
@@TheRandomEntertainer-o5r I think most of these kids kinda sound like Rocket J Squirrel from Rocky and Bullwinkle (Currently airing on MeTV Toons and formally owned by Universal)
I never knew that June Foray originally voiced Karen. Had they helped in her recorded lines, I probably would've noticed. Especially since I watched ALOT of 'Rocky & Bullwinkle' as A kid. Also, I had no idea Christopher Columbus became A controversial figure in recent years.
I’ve noticed how on some prints, at the end, there’s a second or so of silence between Frosty’s final line and the final notes of music. Newer prints don’t have this silence, having the music start just as Frosty’s line ends.
The Columbus line being cut out on NBC is the stupidest thing ever. It’s been broadcast like that for 55 years, why change it? That aside tho, another great video bud!!!
Wouldn't surprise me if one day you make the video, "All broadcast changes made to The Little Drummer Boy", or "The Sad Preservation History of The Little Drummer Boy", because this special has been through several changes through the years in it's various broadcasts and home video releases, such as the original negative getting lost, resulting in every home video release having a super soft, grainy appearance, making it pale in comparison to the releases of the other Rankin/Bass specials, which better source material exists for. Not to mention the 1998 restoration using a work print version of the soundtrack that, although in better sound quality, was missing lots of sound effects and had some bits of scratch dialogue by Paul Frees, and the current Universal Blu-ray print that made the dumbass decision of adding fades to black in parts of the special that didn't originally have them [likely because all they made was a new HD TV print and didn't take the fades to black out for the Blu-ray].
@@jaydensvhsarchive3.095I dunno; I'm assuming that's the best they were able to make it look without completely ruining it; The special's highest quality transfer has been the 2018 Universal Blu-ray, but even that has it's own issues: ua-cam.com/video/nB759QhfBl4/v-deo.htmlsi=chDPLGS_IfYTJdvZ
I’m surprised they did just “re-dubbed” the Cristopher Columbus line with a new child actor saying a different name. Would probably made it less akward
Picture-wise, it's the 2022 4K print. But audio-wise, it's the 2.0 mono track. I don't have a preferred preference for which dub, though I do slightly prefer the original with June Foray.
As much as I like to, there really aren't any notable changes worth noting as it's mainly just cut scenes and shortened songs. There was a brief time where Topper's name was changed to Waddles, but I already made a video talking about that.
Great video. By the way I don't know why but for some reason when ever I hear the original voices for two of the kids in the original audio for Frosty before the re-dub they sound a lot like Conker The Squirrel from Conker's Bad Fur Day. It kind of sounds funny when you think about it. 2:12, 2:26, & 3:03.
I thought nobody knew the name of the voice actress who replaced June Foray. Just like I thought the original edit was lost media. How long has this stuff been uncovered?
When Frosty was on CBS, I always noticed that the kids’ voices sounded much “clearer” and more stereoish than everything else. The slight mains hum that was in the background of their voice tracks didn’t help. This year, NBC tried to fix it, and it definitely blended in with the rest of the soundtrack a lot better. However, now the music sounds too “enhanced” if that makes sense. This special just can’t get a break when it comes to sound mixing.
I literally know the line for each specials main song You know Dasher and Dancer, Prancer and Vixon, Comet and Cupid, Donner and Blitzen..but do you recall..the most famous reindeer of all?… You better watch out, you better not cry, you better not put I’m telling you why..Santa Claus is comin to town….. Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul with a corn cob pipe and a button nose and two eyes..made out of coal! Can’t wait for this video you’re the best Lane!
Although I really like June Foray's performance as Karen becuz its sounds cute and sweet, at times, she sounds either too old or not as powerful (especially when she says "BUT IT'S NOT YOURS ANYMORE! U THREW IT AWAY!"), and some of the performances in the other schoolchildren either sounds too old or very wacky in general. The children's voices fit so much better because they are supposed to sound like children, and they sound more natural. I feel like hearing the schoolchildren's original voices would probably make me laugh becuz of their wacky voices, lol, while the newer ones would make me feel better in a way and not laugh.
Actually Lane, I looked it up and say that when the special was originally in production, June Foray was the voice of Karen, and Paul Frees voiced some of her classmates. However, shortly before it first aired, the children’s lines were redubbed by Suzanne Davidson and Greg Thomas (though a few of Foray’s vocal noises for Karen were retained) what do you think 🤔?
I watched that special a couple times, it's pretty good. Even tho Frosty was voiced by Patrick Star himself (since he was also in a Nicktoons short called "Patrick the Snowman"). I be like: "If I had a nickel for every time Bill Fagerbakke voiced a snowman. I'd had two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice."
@@KingLaneCreations It's great to see both voices of SpongeBob and Patrick were in it and plus the late great Burt Reynolds as the Narrator aka the older self of Tommy Tinkerton (his younger self was voiced by Kath Soucie).
The redub is a rush job. Such sloppy work, but I prefer the child actors because I believe that authenticity is superior to artificial youth. It's however not as bad as Judy Jetson's redubbed dialogue for "Jetsons the Movie"
Tbh, I love Tiffany, but Tiffany should've been the singing voice of Judy Jetson instead of taking over to be the voice in the movie. Janet Waldo was even upset that her recorded dialogue wasn't in the movie (however, a few did remain, which means they would've been errors). I actually would've loved to hear Janet Waldo perform as Judy crying about how Cosmic Cosmo, I believe, was taken when he was supposed to be her date. I can imagine how beautiful and authentic it would've been if I heard it. I would die to hear this.
Having the kids actually sound like kids was a smart move.
I agree. I also think it adds charm to the special.
Never thought I’d say this, but replacing June Foray and Paul Frees as the kids was the best move.
No offense to June but her performance of Karen sound similar to kitty from the 60’s Kimba the white lion series
The kid voice actors were actually better than the adults. The performances sound way more natural.
I agree, especially not bad for kid VAs.
I’m impressed.
That’s true 😊
the 1969 vocals do have some charm imo but the redub vocals do sound better
That is a smart move by having pixelation to avoid all that copyright crap. But I hope you'll put the uncensored version on Internet Archive.
I will say the redubbed lines are far more pleasing to my ear than the originals. Karen's new voice just sounds right!
I'm happy with their decision to redub the kid's voices with actual child voice actors.

I also remember that the later CBS airings added another fadeout/commercial break after Hinkle runs home to write his apology letter.
