- One of the strongest scenes ever from one of the best movies ever made , The girl tortures her cat before poisoning it and herself.
The obvious interpretation is that on the great ladder of being, she is taking out her frustration and impotence on the one creature lower than her. (She was earlier robbed by an older boy.) I’m not so certain. In one of the few points where Tarr quotes extensively from the novel, the narrator intones that the girl knows that even in death, she is still incontrovertibly connected to the entire town around her and its people. (Tarr’s shots of spiderwebs echo these words.) It is presented in a neutral manner, but one shouldn’t confuse neutral with benign.
These people live together, act together, and are damned together. Irimias manipulates them as a whole, and ultimately there is little to distinguish them. I prefer to see the girl’s actions as a testing of the barriers between herself and an animal, as she wonders what other kinds of relations are even possible between beings.
She poisons both the cat and herself alike, and does so, I think, in solidarity with the experience of “shit” of which Tarr speaks.

All the cat noises you hear are samples that we found from the sound archive on the internet, because the cat was totally silent.”
Ah yes, I'm sure it was merely pretending to fight its way out of the bag in which it was forced because it was authentic to its character. I cannot fathom why people defend this film. No 'art' is worth the abuse of an animal.
It is alarming to see that many people are unable to identify cruelty.
Even if the cat was not killed, it doesn't mean there is no animal cruelty. Stressing, scaring the cat and giving her injections to create a movie scene is cruelty as well.
Using a defenseless being who is completely unaware of what is happening is cruelty and cowardice.
It is exactly the fact that animals don't have a voice what makes people think the animal is okay with it or that it has no rights or dignity. That is beyond disgusting and coward.
I also saw many people say that a veterinarian was present during the scenes. How does that change anything? It's absurd. The only thing that means is that the vet was a witness of the torture, and that they considered the cat could end up harmed and need the vet's help. That's bizarre.
Alarming how you people can't see. You either lack strong logic or empathy.

@@pramitpratimdas8198 But what's equally frustrating is that the majority of the Film world doesn't seem to care. There has been a big retrospective of Tarr's work this Summer in the UK. BFI, Curzon, Mubi, Prince Charles Cinema... All esteemed cinephilic institutions that celebrate and revere this film. If you see this film, then you see a cat be deliberately distressed for several minutes. Simple as that. I don't understand why scholars, critics, distributors seem to think it's justified.
@@TMATDPAny animals are stressed or at least very confused on a shooting. Maybe dogs are clever enough to not being stressed, but you can't evade it with cats, goats, some cattle, horses, especially donkeys. For the upcoming Danish movie 'Stranger' I had to lead a Camerun sheep, and he did though otherwise very much. It was a several hours session of pulling that poor guy, yet of course no harm happened and everyone tried to calm him down as much as we could, we gave food, treats and such. Do you think horses like to fall and roll on a crowded battle scene? However that stress is nothing compared to the stress that their wild ancestors gad to endure daily, and those didn't get treats after they escaped a predator.
Also, have you ever had a cat? The stress that she endures here is like the stress when you give it vermifuge or any medicine, or when the doctor prepares for a surgery.
I found out the cat wasn't hurt, it was given a sleep injection by a vet - but it is a difficult scene- I had to walk out- the little girl in the film tries to save the cat -

Given injection is harming the cat too. No one asked any permission from the cat.

It’s essentially torture but it’s mild to say the least. She puts the cats head in water and then puts her arms around it, really not that bad unless I missed something. The ending is a safe injection btw.

This is a beautiful, powerful, and masterful film that absolutely justifies its seven-and-a-half hours. That said, I nearly turned it off during this scene.
I get the symbolism - the girl feels powerless in her bleak life situation, tries to exercise some smidgen of control by abusing a similarly innocent being, and commits suicide after realizing she is doomed to become desperate, miserable, and toxic like everyone else in her life. Still, there are many ways that this point could be made without torturing and needlessly anesthetizing a real animal.
As a cat person with five felines (who all watched this scene very intensely when it played on my TV screen): This is highly effective as a piece of cinema, but I wish that I had at least received some kind of trigger warning beforehand. Very hard to watch and impossible to forget.

People talk about a vet being there or similar arguments. You think that made the cat at ease? Warch the moments before this too. You will see a cat in distress, being physically restrained. We need to dispense of the pretentious justifying of animal abuse for the sake of art.

The scene AFAIK was done under veterinarian's supervision and the cat was director's own cat.

@@genericusername337 No, this scene was very carefully rehearsed. The girl and the cat prepared together at the hotel during the location shoot, rolling on the floor like that and everything. The rest is clever soundtrack and a bit of luck.

Maybe to generate feelings of conflict in the audience cuz the girl kills herself after she kills the cat. Then a faux savior comes and blames the whole village for her death. It's a shitty situation all around
Oh, it definitely adds to the story. But it sure didn't feel right when I watched it in the cinema, it's clearly animal cruelty. The girl reportedly rehearsed rolling with the cat before the shot, and there was a vet present (some vet), but the poor cat was obviously stressed out and drugged. Still, I can't say it didn't add to the story, because it really did.
I heard about this scene and expected far worse, I would go as far to say this isn’t bad. She puts the cats head in water for a few seconds and then puts her arms around it, really not that bad. Am I missing something? The horse treatment in movies gone by is far far worse. I’m not hating against cats I just don’t think this scene is that violent, she didn’t cut it or punch it. Looks very mild to say the least.

I saw the words "animal torture" on an Imdb review before watching the film, so when this scene came on I was covering my eyes expecting the worse. It's not THAT bad. The kid is a bit rough handling the cat but it's not like she beats it or anything.
Before this scene is several minutes of the cat being wrestled around while being forcefully held by its forepaws. Then, the cat is put into a bag and is left there, trying to wriggle its way out (as a cat would - it has no understanding of what is happening). It was clearly in distress. There has been worse treatment, yes, but this one feels particularly prolonged (I imagine there were several takes too), and of course *any* mistreatment is bad, regardless of other examples.

Looks like Bela Tarr indeed injured the cat in the making of the movie, and tried to use the veterinarian thing as an excuse. I understand the statement "it stops being art when someone's injured" but in my reality, living a 3rd world country, i see people doing worse to animals, humans are cruel people, and nature is tough with everyone. Unfortunately, as painful as this scene can be for many, it's the reality of people who got no soul and no good will left, being poor and living in a rural area, i've seen things you people would get crazy mad at.
And to show how cruel reality is, you become part of that reality, making the same mistakes you are trying to address as mistakes that shouldn't be made?
You torture a cat to show that cats are tortured in real life?
But if you are aware that this is the harsh reality and it is wrong, how could you do the exact same thing?
You can't tell the world something is wrong by doing exactly that wrong thing.

Eh directors often abuse their actors to get the best out of them, it's really common. Ofc they'd treat animals even worse. Clouzot for example used to slap his actresses, he slapped Brigitte Bardot on the set of Le Verite. Bardot slapped him back and Clouzot never repeated it. Clouzot put the life of his own wife at risk on set even though she had a heart condition. She did die of a heart attack later on. Artists love stretching the boundaries of what we think art should be

Y'all missing the point: no one needs to see anything like this happening. It amounts to snuff porn, and if Tarr felt it was necessary to subject viewers to watching a cat being tortured and killed to get whatever his point was across, then the sooner he'is dead and buried with his miserable, morbid, sick, nihilistic existential outlook the better as far as I'm concerned.

@@Brandon-rb4sm the cat ultimately didnt die, and was not harmed. the girl had practiced moving around with the cat until it didnt care anymore. it was also given a mild sleep injection thing so it would feel very little and then sleep. i believe his vet was also present on the set as well.
im not saying its good that they did that to a cat, but i dont think its fair to say the director is a cat abuser.

yeah, not astronomically but definitely worse. the cat got hurt on nails and stuff sticking out of walls in the novel. it also defecated, which ultimately convinced estike to kill it
