Yes, Toaster Strudel is better without a doubt. But the real story is that Daniel put his Poptarts in the toaster. It don’t know of a single kid who didn’t just tear those open and devour them - that is why they put them in vending machines nowadays. But even as a child he took the time to toast, butter, and savor his pre-packaged breakfast slabs, years later fondly recalling the experience and flavor while boldly claiming that it will “change your life” if you tried it today. I have to believe that he emerged at birth clutching that medallion, opining to the tending physician about the music his mother listened to while he was no bigger than a cashew. He cannot help himself. Truly he embodies he spirit of a Som, through and through.

I bet his Mama wasn't happy about birthing that medallion.

I got rubber on the nose of the Red Wine cask blend as well.
I think it's great that more people are getting into whiskey. I've been drinking whiskey since I've been old enough to purchase it a couple decades ago. Only recently have I met others who drink Scotch as well. I was reminded of mooching some whiskey when I helped a coworker do a local television news story on holiday hangovers. She interviewed me at a local pub and offered to pay for my drink. The bar told her no charge and I asked if I could sample of Glenlivet 21, which they gave me a nice pour for free. That was more than a decade ago now.

I used to be a big Irish whisky fan until you guys came along. Now I'm absolutely in love with peated Scotch and my wallet has definitely seen better days.
That being said, I've been lurking around the channel for a good month and realize that you two are amazingly positive about every drink. So my question is.. was there ever a whisk(e)y you've had that was so bad, you couldn't give it a single compliment?

    • @ericschwab409
      @ericschwab409 6 років тому

Welcome to the mad house! You’ve come into the light........you should have run from the light! Lol! Seriously, I’m not speaking for Daniel or Rex, but, yes, I do recall that they have tasted whiskies they have not liked and they have said as much. However, I think their reviews are diplomatic and they do try to find at least something good in every whisk(e)y. Daniel famously said early on in the Whisk(e)y Vault that there are no bad whiskies and there is no wrong way to drink a whisk(e)y. The scathing comments about certain whiskies have come from the viewers, and even then you won’t find total agreement.

So, I just want to say that I really appreciate that you guys address these feelings that a group of your fans have in a productive and helpful way. I feel that way sometimes when I go to look at the number of likes on the video, and there are only around 300 or so. I have made sure to like every single video since I started watching around 3000 subscribers, and watch the full run time because I know that will help with the youtube algorithm and help you guys expand and grow the channel. I hate that I still get those kinds of feelings, and talking about it has helped me really turn my thinking around and ask myself what I can do to help newbies in the tribe and the facebook group. Cheers to you Magnificent Bastards! May the channel grow daily and may your glasses ever be full!

Hey guys, I have something to share I think you'll both be happy to hear. About a month ago I decided I wanted to make all this knowledge about whiskey I've accumulated from watching the vault videos to start working for me. I have about a dozen friends who are all really interested in learning more about it as well so I found a way to rent the tasting room at a Total Wine near my house and I'm going host my own whiskey tastings. We're gonna do it once a month and I'm planning on including a good amount of educational material to help them learn more about what they're drinking. Best part is that after the expenses, I'll end up with a good amount of free whiskey as well as a few hundred bucks in my pocket per tasting. I'm pretty excited to get it started and thought I'd share with you. Who knows, if this thing grows maybe I'll start my own small sommelier school.

It was designed and blended by a woman and is finished for an undertemined time in a red wine cask. We compared it in a tasti g to Teeling Single Grain which is also finished in a red wine cask and the majority preferred the Johnnie Walker. It would make a great Highball for Summer drinking in hot climates.

Frosted brown sugar pop tarts > all. If you disagree, I have zero shits to give. I think all Johnnie Walker blends are easy, uncomplicated, smooth "beginner" drinks with the exception of Double Black and Green. If those were the only two choices in that line, I'd be ok with that.

When I was a kid, the PopTarts didn’t even have frosting on them. There were like two or three flavors....apple, strawberry, and chocolate or cinnamon if I remember correctly. I remember when they were first introduced. It was a great day......I laugh when I look back because we actually had so little but we thought we had it all! Lol!

Toaster Strudel all the way. How is this even a conversation we're having? Pop Tarts are fine, but their function is to build character. They teach you to make the most of what you have and be grateful that you have that much. Toaster Strudels, however, are to inspire you. Stay in school, work hard, reap the piping hot, flaky, sugar-coated reward to which you've aspired, then share with friends and family so that they too can set such a worthwhile goal.

Hey fellas, love these videos (currently making my way through the channel from the beginning) and heard Daniel talking about washing and scrubbing labels off of old bottles for personal blends. Thought I'd share a really cool thing in case folks have never tried it - - my brother-in-law is an engineer at NASA and got his doctorate in thermal polymers, which only interests me because he told me that whiskey and wine bottles use thermal adhesive on their labels. So, you can heat an empty bottle up in the oven at 400 degrees for ten minutes and then use any old knife to peel up the corner of the label and it'll come right off the bottle unharmed because at that temperature, the adhesive is no longer sticky. (so cool and really works) Then you can put the label on a blank page in a journal; and as the glue cools off it becomes adhesive once again and sticks to the paper in the journal. At which point you can record the occasion of the whiskey, who you shared it with, what you liked or disliked about it. You may already know this, being that you have a tower and a school and many hundreds of bottles, but if not, it's a really cool way to document your journey without being overrun by tons of old glass bottles. Cheers, Lee (Also, I can't speak for Toaster Strudels 'cause my mom only bought pop tarts, and generic ones at that)

Fairly amusing that the biggest battles on this whisky channel are over pastries. Some will probably say that a product should stand on its own without needing to add things to make it better any more than judging whisky only in cocktails.
So it's pretty clear what needs to happen, we need a side to side comparison. Get some Pop Tarts, some Toaster Strudels and, to add a bit to the mix, some pancakes. Then grab that bottle of Nikka Coffey Malt...
    For science!

  • @Fidasaind

A pour of Lagavulin 16 is approaching $30? Ouch. An entire bottle is $70! I expect the markup to be at most 4x the price of a bottle when at a bar or restaurant (preferably 2x but I understand they've gotta make their money). ~15 servings per bottle and 30 each is $450/bottle. That works out to $112.50 per bottle if it was a 4x markup. I'd expect Lagavulin 16 to be at most $18-20 for ~1.5-2oz pour.
The 12 costs more generally because I think that is the Distiller's Edition. I think around here it runs about $120/bottle. Or $8/serving. That means assuming similar price, less than 2x retail price. So yeah. A steal!
Worst I've had was at a pub. I wanted to try Del Bac Dorado (the mesquite smoked one) and saw they had a cocktail that included Del Bac and it was a smoky old fashioned. I asked to try it. It was a stingy pour (maybe 1oz) and was $10. And it was the unaged one. Which is like $30/bottle here. So they were pouring about 1/25th of the bottle and charging $10. AKA $250/bottle if you bought the entire thing 1 pour at a time. For a $30 bottle. AKA 8x mark up. Needless to say, the next time I went back I stuck with beer. And they price that very fairly. (a small pitcher which is about 2 pints for $5 all day if you come in by bicycle and/or during happy hour... and these include local beers not just the cheap domestic stuff).

      @QuickQuips 6 років тому

Yeah, I think the best way to treat bars is an opportunity to try a drink that you cannot find miniatures or half bottles of. Otherwise it will be an accelerated way to kill your wallet and drink less. I'm wondering if some restaurants would allow whisky for a bottle service like they do with wine.

While I'll admit to toaster strudels being higher in quality, I still get pop tarts for their price and convenience. Don't need to freeze them, don't need to heat them (unless you want to, I guess). Honestly though, I like both, but I don't need to wait for a pop tart.
Plus when I want to flirt with diabeetus, I toast two and use them for an ice cream sandwich.

Strudel hands down better then a poptart as strudel has so much more fruiter characters. Poptarts are flat and normally dry up but are decently sweet. Have you guys heard about all the Finishes which Diageo Johnnie Walkers are working on as they have a Rum Cask and even working on a Tequila Cask which I'm not sure they're allowed to release.

I have never commented on any of your videos, even though I have seen them all. But for some reason this pop tart vs toaster strudel argument made me jump to the comment section. I could not sit on the sidelines and just read the unjustified bashing the pop tarts were receiving and the misguided praise for the strudel. The tribe needs a US-based whiskey tasting subscription service with affordable rates on whiskeys that are generally available in all 50 states. Ordering from Flaviar or overseas is insane. Most people just don't have the budget to be able to taste a tenth of what is in the Vault in their lifetime, not even counting the locked cabinet. The vault has been wonderful for me in finding whiskeys I love, but not being rich means that when I bought that expensive (in my state) bottle of Angel's Envy that I didn't like, I had to budget carefully for months before I could afford Spice Tree. The two of them cost more than 5 bottles of Bulleit.

Also if you are in Pittsburgh and enjoy Yamazaki 12 head to social house you can get like a 6 ounce pour for 15 bucks

I actually enjoyed this Wine Blend. I prefer it above JW Black and DBL Black. I would honestly keep this in the house decanter as an everyday over my normal Glenmorangie 10yr. JMO

Toaster strudel for sure. Although pop tarts have the convenience!

I have to agree with Rex, Toaster Strudel is superior...I'd like to try the buttered pop tart...

When I was a kid it was unfrosted, and BUTTERED (thanks mama), TOAST'EM BRAND strawberry "pop-ups." Daniel soooo wins this one. The struedel is a different animal altogether.

Did Peter Griffin and Quagmire singing the "Have you ever put butter on a Pop Tart" song immediately show up in anybody else's head?

Pop tarts are original. Toaster strudels are like over flavored whiskey. 🤣😝😎🤠

Ok so, this might be a good time to ask a question about JW Red. My dad loves it, it’s the only whiskey he drinks, and from watching this show for about a year it is very clear that the red Is quite the base line whiskey. Are there some whiskeys that are more complex and nuanced that he can get, that still get a similar flavor (tart, sweet, etc). He doesn’t like the black nor does he like Smokey whiskeys, I know there should be no snobbery but I truly think there must be better flavors to be tasted.

YES YES YES! Daniel is so right on the pop tart thing. That was basically my entire childhood was unfrosted, toasted, buttered strawberry pop tarts. People still say I’m crazy for that haha
But Toaster Streudel over pop tarts any day. Rex is crazy for not using the icing though.

When a whiskey show devolves into a highly in depth comparison of a poptart vs a toaster strudel

Daniel is correct in saying buttered plain strawberry Pop-Tarts are amazing. Toaster Strudels are delightful, but Rex comes in a close second on this argument.
Further, this distinction is made on the toaster pastry as a whole, not on individual components. While the strudel has a better pastry and filling, the whole Pop Tart is greater than the sum of its parts. Made to choose only one component, I'd go with TS pastry, but again dipped in melted butter.
