Visiting Wouter Van Veldhoven, magnetic tape musician

- In which I visit @Wouter van Veldhoven , a tape loop and electro-acoustic musician I have long admired. I get a tour of his studio/workspace and some of his beautiful creations and techniques, from the surprising Brüel & Kjaer gong, over the automated harmonium to the multi-head tape pitch shifter. Then we perform on tape, modular and Ciat-Lonbarde together.
This video was made possible through everyone supporting me on Patreon. It is the first where I truly realize my goal of visiting synth/tape/soundart artists and show their techniques, as well as collaborate. If this is something that inspires you and want to see more of, consider signing up on my Patreon. It helps me invest time in money to realize these remotes and you get tons of goodies, from music to sounds.

I'm so glad to see Wouter in the spotlight, his work really deserves more attention! Thanks Hainbach!
Those Brüel & Kjær machines never stop giving!
Seeing Hainbach getting out at MY TRAINSTATION ?! #mindblown
hainbach's intro is the most powerful asmr on this site
Woah! Two of my favourite experimental musicians in one video.... UA-cam doesn't get much better than this.
Love that Soviet wire recorder and to see some of the tape reels I sent to Wouter being used in his studio.
It's a pity you couldn't have stayed longer.
Thank you so much again!
Super inspirational... would love more videos of you visiting the studios of other artists!
next coming in two weeks!
Yay!
Great! My 2 favorite "tapeheads" together ;)
Havent seen this guy in forever, so nice to see Wouter in action in his own habitat!
You got the same name as him as well, just like me ; )
@@superultrathanksmom3845 And me!
Hey! I have the same name too!
All Wouters unite!
Can I be an honorary Wouter?
That Russian wire recorder being used for echo, alone is blowing my mind.
I seems to be an Мн-61(Mn-61) www.rw6ase.narod.ru/00/mg_kat_/mn61.html Not too hard to find really, on post-soviet marketplaces they are sold for 50-80 euros.
Thanks for that windmill. I needed that. :)
I remember watching that Wouter video years ago.
thanks for the video. love this guy! (and you too)
YES! Thank you for this, so wonderful to see you two working together. Wouter's music always inspires me to try out new things.
This messy workspace, leading to strangely fascinating music...
I can almost smell the tubes and the old casings. Maybe there's a tiny scent of solder in the air? I feel so much at home in places like this. I wish I had such a cosy play-cave.
Nice video and also fun to see my old commute to school in the Rotterdam metro in the intro 👍
FUCK YES I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU TWO TO LINK UP!
Amazing video once again, mate! Thank you!
wow! what a playful workplace, that's what music is all about!
Bitte! Richtig an gefixt!
Can't help but hear The Andromeda Strain when I hear that music. :D
still love it!!
Amazing Music
The first electronic music LP that I bought featured Steve Reich and Pauline Olivera. Reich's "Come Out", as everyone watching this probably knows, was a tape manipulation piece. Incredibly trippy! I still will occasionally put it on and listen to it through headphones. You can also tell if a potential friend will be a good fit if they can listen to the whole thing!
No , sorry : this one doesn't know that record . . . But i wouldn't mind to have a listen , wink wink ;o)
Awesome! This video inspires me so much! Thanks for sharing;)
I love these WTF moments watching your vids. The world needs you man.
Wow!
Such sound. I need more tape in my life!
Funny seeing you walking through the Netherlands, it almost feels as if you're visiting our dimension from your own. Have a great stay!
Amazing
Excellent sounding noises! Goodtimes!
Tape, long underrated musical instrument.
*rrrrrrrzzzz* I love the sound of tape!
"Brüel & Kjær Beater Box" made me laugh. Excellent video! I have a new musician to check out now.
I like his music 😺
Wonderful! I love this blend of analog and digital tinkering. Would have loved to get a closer look at that raspberry pi configuration, it looked super interesting!
Oh, Christ! I'm a big-time fan of Van Veldhoven's work! The man is a genius! Thanks so much for this!
Noooo, I could've seen you at Worm yesterday? That is such a bummer. But awesome you've visited Dennis Verschoor and Wouter van Veldhoven. Two amazing artists.
Love that minimalistic sounds ape on min 7ish. Great video! Was nice seeing you in Rotterdam!
At last! I expected that u'll meet him and upload this video many months ago!
We only met two weeks ago 😄
Oooh my God, the David Duchovny of the tape recorders! Great atmospheres

@@Hainbach Awesome!
Wouter is a magician.
Merci Beaucoup! Hope to visit France soon, INA GRM and the Michelsonne Toy Piano Museum are on my list.
That's a dream job right there.
legends
mad scientists!
Nice to see that there are so many magicians in my country .. I just started with tape because of your chanel HAINBACH .. and found out today that there is something wrong with the capstan of my Wega .. so my cassette recorders wil need to do the trick for now ... anyway..this video gives me some confort for now ...while I ponder what to do about my reel to reel ... thanks and have fun
@@marcuszc3172 if you need any advise on the tapemachine feel free ask.
@@woutervanveldhoven thanks wouter .. in dutch ok ?
(Sorry for the dutch HAINBACH)
wow super interesting ! & great sounding!
mono -poly! ftw!
Great way to start the week! Thanks Hain~ Lv
👍
Hello Hainbach. I was wandering if you ever had interference problem from radio frequencies? I have this problem on a Sony reel to reel. I did put "magnets" on the wires but with no results. I thank you in advance and I already learned a lot from you.
Mmh, never had problems - maybe you are running too long cables? Tried a DI box? Usually tape machines are shielded against RF, because that what they had to record from an amot often.
@@Hainbach They unfortunately have to be quite long in my setup (15 ft). Never tried a DI box and will do. A ''funny'' thing is that I can also ear the radio on the speaker of my old Yamaha Automatic Bas Chord System and yes. It is the same channel. Thanks you soo much for your response. I'll keep you posted if it works.
Nice, top 10 anime crossovers
I must always think of SFX sound Artist if i see stuff like this [and it's cool].
It's the combination of (things)/mix in music.
That was interesting like always 👍🏼.
Enjoy the days 'HAINBACH' and have fun [to make music] + everyone here too ;)
It looks like a cave of a crazy music scientist
Welcome to Rotterdam :-)
I'd think if he could mount that hanging spool on a movable track, perhaps with a set screw he could resolve the tension problem. Also, perhaps a lighter reel?
Thinking a bit more about this - maybe a mic straight stand with (very well) taped-on rod at a 90 degree angle where the reel could be mounted onto - the idea would be of course to experiment with slack.
fuck hij komt dichtbij :D
6:35 Ooooo my native language ))
This rips!
🌀 EPIC 🌀
I guess, you have to Go back & finish what you started....(-;
Seconded !
Almost sounds like some lofi chillhop
Hej Wouter! Groetjes uit Rotterdam !
Hey Chris! (Denk ik?)
@@woutervanveldhoven Ja! Chris. Haha, sorry.
