"Regulators" was one of several names for the "slave patrols" that had operated since at least the eighteenth century, patrolling by night to look for runaway slaves and verifying that any they encountered had "permission" to be out. They were variously also called "night riders" or "pattyrollers" (corrupted from "patrollers"). This was the element that took over the Ku Klux Klan when Reconstruction was passed (before that point the KKK was only a silly social club with no purpose). At the same time it formed multiple other similar local vigilante groups, the various emanations of which were often lumped under the umbrella term "Ku Klux" even though the actual KKK was dissolved in 1869. And if it's not already obvious, "Regulators/Slave Patrols/Night Riders" are the direct ancestors of the modern police.
This is my county, that I live in and I have never heard any of this before, but I knew things like this had to have happened. And there is a reason why, people want to forget it, but if we forget it, it will happen again, fast. It's already at the doorstep now.
It never gets easier to hear these stories...but if these stories ever stop being told..we wd be destined to repeat them
We've been repeating this history, we don't learn.
Just remember your hearing them not living them
Thank you so much for telling our stories. Each one teach one. ✊🏿🖤

Poor Samuel. He was an honest hardworking man who didn't deserved what happened to him. My heart goes out to to his family.
