My mom was an incredible housekeeper. She would clean from morning to after everyone was asleep. Her big thing was towels and linens and she would keep everything white, crisp and properly folded. When she was dying she held my hand and said, "Lizzy, if the kids want to use big beach towels to dry themselves when they get out of the bath, let them. It's really not so important for the towels to be perfect." That broke my heart a bit, but I'm also kind to myself when things can't be perfect.

Love to you. I was thinking exactly this while reading others’ comments about being a perfect housekeeper or not. It’s nice to keep your home calm and together but the point of that is for you and your family to enjoy it - not to keep it sterilised for visitors. No one ever lay on their deathbed wishing they cleaned more.

My mother did her dishes by hand every night, but as we began to grow, the children knew that that was the time to speak to her one to one as we dried or put them away. Sometimes she asked a specific child to help and got the problem out of us. The other children learned not to interrupt.

I worked as a retail manager for years. We had a saying, “Close to open.” which meant that you left the store at night having set it in place ready to open in an instant the next morning. That way if things happened in the morning, you didn’t have things from the night before to deal with. That has stuck with me now that I stay home with 4 kids. I don’t always do it perfectly, but I can attest that mornings with a clean kitchen are better than mornings with a dirty one.

Close to open -I like that. I like that because it doesn’t mean perfect. And some days we not close maybe -cause life can be hectic - but it’s a great thing to strive for more of the time. 🙌🙌

I always stayed late in the afternoon to get my classroom ready for the next morning and even stayed late on Fridays to have a nice start on Monday mornings. I'm not a morning person and it made my world, my classes, everything so much better when I didn't start "behind".

I'm currently working to instill this habit in my coworkers at my new retail location! Clean counters, empty trash, pens & order forms ready, etc. I agree: nothing is worse than starting the day "behind".
I'm not a morning person, either, so I try to make sure (at night when I'm at my best) I have everything ready at home for my departure in the morning: clothes, meals, keys-phone-glasses all in their place, etc. Loving this channel & ready to start minimalist living!

One tip which helps me is to fill one sink/washtub w soapy water as I begin prepping to cook. I saw my Aunt do this at Thanksgiving one year and I was amazed at how easy it was to simply wash things as we went. For example, as ingredients were added to the stuffing/dressing, the empty prep bowls went right into the soapy water. Every few minutes one of us would wash whatever things had accumulated, rinse and place them in the drying rack. After a few minutes drip drying, one of us would towel dry the items and put them away to make room for the next load. This doesn't just work for holiday or family meals when there are multiple people helping; it even works for me as a single. I will scrape some things and load them in the dishwasher. Others go right into that soapy water and even if I wait until after I eat to wash them, it takes a very few minutes then. Also, there are no "ugly" piles of pans on the counter to look at while I am eating. I am still working to make it a habit, but it really does help.

We do dishes every day because growing up we didn't. When days of dishes accumulated, it was dreadful. And then flylady told me to clean my sink every single day. That's was the turning point for me many years ago. My house was always a mess. It's been a long rewarding journey but now my dishes are washed every day. I would even tell myself "I love washing dishes" until the day came that I enjoyed the clean sink. (working mom of 7 kids here).
Tip: wash pans as you use them and have dish water ready for immediately after a meal.

I wash as I cook, so after dinner all that has to be cleaned up is what's on the table. In our house pots & pans are washed by hand, but anything that touches a mouth goes in the dishwasher after a meal. Sure cuts down on spreading colds and other illnesses.

Yes He does! We always told our kids when they questioned why a prayer wasn't answered the way they thought it should be that it was answered, that sometimes the answer is yes, sometimes the answer is no, and sometimes the answer is in a while, and that no matter when it's answered it is answered according to His will and in His time.

I hate doing dishes. I don’t use that word lightly either! But, about a year ago, I found an article from a blogger (can’t remember who, sorry!) and she suggested building some routines/habits of doing the dishes every night, one load of laundry a day, and to prep what to make for dinner that night every morning. So, I have this little mantra I tell myself each morning after I’ve had a cup of coffee...“dishes, laundry and dinner” and that’s my cue to empty the dishwasher, put a load of laundry in, and prep whatever we need for dinner. Then, I say the same thing at night. “Dishes, laundry and dinner”...start the dishwasher, fold and put away laundry, and put whatever meat we need for the next day in the fridge to thaw. It’s taken some time, but the habit is so strong now and it’s made the biggest difference in my day to feel sane! Sorry for the long post! Thank you for your encouragement for all of us!

You ladies are so special! And I need to thank you. I am one of those that washes dishes multiple times a day because I get irritated if I ever need to fill my water pitcher or something and I have to move stuff out of the sink. Anyway - short story long - my kids are 16, 19 & 22 - all boys (not that that matters but .... LOL) and are all at home going to school. I had FINALLY found my dream set of Correll and a 12 place setting. Perfect for our size family. But I've spent the last few years doing dishes and then saying "Who just put their dishes in the sink right after I cleaned it"? And I either hear crickets or "not it'! Then I watched your last couple videos and saw your littles washing their own dish. I spend so much time saying just rinse it and put it in the dishwasher and call it a day. But then they say ... but the stuff was dried and it had to soak ... UGH .. and I saw 'Don't let it sit in your room that long - bring it out as soon as you're done with it (we ususally don't eat together or at the table due to different schedules)!!! So yesterday I spent a few hours and went to 3 different Targets and got their $0.50 hard plastic dinner plate, dinner bowl and cereal bowl in 5 different colors. This week I will pack my dishes up and break out each of these sets and let my grown up kids know that they have a color. If they do not wash their color, they will have nothing to eat on. Hopefully this will ease some of my stress and make my not be so irritated at them so much. Community ... WISH ME LUCK! LOL. Thanks again for always (1) cheering us on and (2) stressing the importance of mini milestones. You are appreciated so much. Stay Safe

One principle my mom taught me growing up is to use and put things away without ever setting something down and walking away from it. Diane mentioned this idea as, "clean up as you go." Wipe down counters while you're cooking. Pull ingredients out, use them, put the rest back as one motion. Plate up the food and DO NOT drop the pan(s) in the sink. Run them immediately through hot water with a scrubby and soap. Pans just emptied are the easiest to clean. Set them back on the stove and they dry themselves while you eat dinner and admire your kitchen that never got messy in the first place!
You can teach yourself and your kids this simple principle and apply it to everything you do. Having a minimal house is really a plus in this process! Start with something small. Can you brush your teeth and never put the toothpaste or toothbrush on the counter? Get them both out, hold both while you put toothpaste on your toothbrush, put the cap back on and put it back in its place before you start to brush. Finish brushing, rinse the brush and put it back. It's like that. Doing something a new way can at first seem harder but when you see how it makes any task actually faster you'll want to apply it everywhere you can. Become a motion expert so you can use LESS energy and make NO mess. Your goal is to walk away from any area of the house you just used and leave it as clean or cleaner than it was when you walked in, simply by never setting anything down and walking away from it. :)

I grew up with my mother making us help with doing the dishes every night, but I still struggle with doing the dishes, but I have a physical disability that sometimes stops me from standing and doing the dishes, dont own a dishwasher and don't have someone else to help me do them, but I just take my time and sometimes have to take a break and leave them then come back

I hear you. I struggle with depression, and a family of women who not only do the dishes after every meal, but also sweep then as well! If I can run the dishwasher, with pots and pans in it, once a day I’m ahead. Give yourself a pat and a cup of tea!

I do this as well. I used to feel bad about leaving them. Now I do them as I can, sometimes just a few of them one day, more the next. And I don't beat myself up about it anymore. It's a big relief.

@@sherunswithscissors You can do you. My sister-in-law runs 5-15 miles a day. If I can do a 15 minute walk, I'm learning to feel good about it. So never mind who else does what. You do you. Depression is much worse when you beat yourself up or compare yourself to others, I know from experience. Just learning now at 61 how to be kinder to myself. I'm rooting for you.

When I was little, my dad would talk about wanting to have just one cup for a person. It never happened but that thought was one I took into my parenthood. "Sometimes, I just wish we all had just one dish set per person." After watching a few of your videos, I just said we're doing it. I made cup scrunchies for each kid so they can have a water cup all day and know which cup is theirs. I am blown away at what it has done for the kitchen, and we even have a tall tumbler and a short tumbler for each kid and yet when we get "behind" on dishes, it's still such a quick clean-up. After all, you can only get one day behind because they have to be washed before the next meal. :) When we run the dishwasher, we can only find enough cups for about half of the top rack (there are 6 of us and most of my kids are teens). Often, I tell whoever washes dishes that night to just wash them by hand because there isn't enough to fill the dishwasher. I am amazed that this idea my dad wanted to implement has been gold in our home. Technically we have more dishes but the kids know the only time they are allowed to get the top shelf dishes is when the grandkids are here. We're still learning the idea of washing as we go. I appreciate your videos and inspiring me to take the next step.

Your dishwasher has a sensor that checks how dirty the water is during its initial rinse. So people who only scrape their dishes and toss them in the dishwasher end up with cleaner dishes...using far less effort. When I swapped over to that method-tossing in a pod and running the dishwasher as I went to bed-I found that I woke up to clean dishes each morning that I could put away as I was fixing coffee. I feel SO successful as a dish manager, now... and I had never felt that way before, even when scrubbing by hand. My dishes are so amazingly clean, and I feel like I have a handle on my kitchen.

Honestly, I have a shopping and hoarding problem. While I have chipped away at decluttering/ cleaning my home day by day and worked in therapy to help with the underlying issues, I knew I had to focus first on those things. I have been using disposable silverware and plates since starting the process and it has been so worthwhile to not have a pile of dishes discouraging an already depressed me that I SHOULD have done those already like everything else. My willpower can now be focused on getting systems in place ❤️

Over two years ago, I had built a resentment toward my wife because she wasn't doing the dishes every day. One morning, I looked at myself in the mirror and said, out loud, "If you want the dishes done every day, then do them."
I stared back at myself in disbelief for a minute, then I walked to the kitchen, did the dishes and cleaned up the entire kitchen. I've done that almost every morning since. I love knowing my wife can walk into a kitchen ready for whatever/whoever may come.
PS. I don't do dishwashers. They're more work than they're worth, and I get the dishes cleaner by hand. FACTS.
