I remember this scene when it first aired and get emotional watching it again. Any one that has lost their mother and/or a long-time viewer of All My Children can identify with Erica..... Great work by Susan Lucci and rest of the cast.
Dignified manner? Erica didn't know how to grieve Mona, that's why she broke down the way she did. Erica and Mona never saw eye to eye, and it didn't click into Erica's head that she'd lose her mother forever until this one moment. It's very powerful and true to her character.
I feel for Erica I just about reacted the same way when my mother passed away 12 years when i see this scene I broke down just a little inside I feel her pain.
I reacted the same way at my son's funeral. I was completely numb until my husband told me we had to leave. I just flipped out saying that Sam needed his bottle and he needed his mom. It's been almost 6 years since I lost him, and the pain is still fresh.
There were so many storylines that Susan Lucci should have won an Emmy for and this is definitely one of them!! I remember watching her thinking this was for sure her Emmy moment! Didn't actually happen until 1999.
When you are as close to your parent as Erica and Mona were portrayed to be, the overwhelming sense of loss that comes over you is incredible. I think Lucci was perfect here.
I appreciate good acting and this was amazing acting. First, Erica Kane is over the top but Susan Lucci played the scene as Erica not as Susan who would have grieved differently. If you watch the previous scenes it seems like Erica was in denial and hardly reacting to her mom's death and then like in real life for some and obviously Erica it hits her. I can't believe some people think Lucci or AMC should be embarassed - this was perfectly played out as Erica Kane. Emmy and Oscar deserving!
My husband told me that when his Dad died, his Mom was completely numb and quiet. At the wake his Mom had a complete meltdown and started pounding on his chest, screaming "stosha (polish for Stanley), oh stosha don't leave me!" Rick (my husband). ordered everyone out of the room so he could try to calm his Mom down (everyone else just tried to drag her out of there) and give her a few moments alone with his Dad.
This was the 2nd time I ever 😢 watching a soap. The 1st was when Megan died on One Life to Live. Both broke my heart. I cried when Luna Moody got shot and died. I was very hurt when Nash died on One Life as well.
i have seen this seen so many times, more times than i care to even count and i still cant watch it without crying, this is susan lucci's best performance, for me at least.
The actress who played Mona Kane was Frances Heflin, the sister of actor Van Heflin. check him out in the movie Shane and you'll see a startling resemblance between the two.
I remember keeping my Mom from watching this scene. Her Mom had passed away about 12 years earlier, and she would have been absolutely bawling at this. I forget the excuse I made up, but it worked.
Susan Lucci played the scene beautifully and in keeping with Erica's personality. Also she and Frances Heflin were very close. Always thought that fact made the many years of scenes between Mona and Erica more believable and realistic. Underneath all the arguing was a deep love.
I keep on looking at this clip and I am left in tears myself. I am even more resolved - Lucci really can act and this was powerful especially in light of the build up over several days. This should have won her the Emmy along with the Kendall scenes - she was and is the bomb. WHy there is such jealousy towards Lucci I do not know.
LOL...Erica's reaction/breakdown reminds me of the end of Imitation of Life, when Sarah Jane runs after the casket carrying her mother away and says how sorry she is and all that stuff.....only thing is is that I don't wanna smack the s$%t out of Erica like I did Sarah Jane.
For the people criticizing Susan in this scene, you must not have been an AMC viewer at the time. Erica was always over dramatic and her relationship w/ her mother was an important element in her life. The way she responded to the news her mother was dead was completely NOT Erica, I was watching and waiting for this Break, just wondering When is was gonna happen and how. Susan did a Perfect Erica breaking down, I was sobbing with her. To this day it's one of only a few scenes from soaps that will bring tears to my eyes just remembering it and AMC wasn't my favorite show. She should have won an Emmy for this but I'd be willing to bet knowing how it is remembered by fans even decades later is a reward more cherished.
I watched AMC on and off since the early 70s (I stopped watching when they killed off Jenny Gardner). This is extremely hard to watch. Susan does an excellent job on this, as anyone who had lost a parent could see. I don;t think I could watch this scene again. I loved Mona. RIP
A lot of fans agree Lucci should have gotten her first Emmy either for Mona's death (like this scene) or for the drug addiction...I agree. But am still glad she finally won in 1999 and watch her acceptance speech on You Tube all the time. Long live La Lucci! ;)
Very good acting. Like Nancy Marchand as Livia Soprano, Susan Lucci is such a nice person in real life as compared to their characters. RIP Nancy, and the actress who played Mona
I completely agree. Anyone familiar with the character understands that the loss of Mona would hit Erica suddenly and cause utter devastation. I truly believe it never occurred to Erica that Mona would die, and the funeral really drove home the finality of the moment. This is totally in character with who Erica is.
This is true to life, as over-the-top as it may seem. Intense grief can easily make you react in a way you wouldn't ordinarily act like. Ask me how I know.......
@imachildofthe80s8089 Louis Edmonds passed away in 2001. Langley was last seen on camera in 1995. Langley's death was not mentioned until 2005 when Phoebe passed away.
I can't find the actual scene, but I DO remember it from 14 years ago. The woman who played Erica's mom had died days prior to them writing it in the script. So what they did was, write Erica coming home, going upstairs to tell her mom something, and the next scene showed her coming back down the stairs with a look of shock. It ends there.
Emmy and awards are political but I wasn't a soap fan but I saw this scene and I felt for the character of Erica and the little girl (Her daughter) and all the friends and family. Had AMC kept the writing like this they would still be on the air. I do sense a lot of jealousy towards Lucci - not sure she seems to be a kind, generous lady who loves her family and friends.
AMC was not on the verge of cancellation at all last year. That stupid rumor came from that rag, Daytime Confidential, where one of their "journalists", Nelson Branco, has a hard on for hating the show and often will come up with ludicrous rumors such as it will go off the air. It's HIS dream but not reality and he needs a life. Lucci is not just a staple on AMC. She is the only soap actress to be a household name. She's doing something right and this clip proves it
@novusmundi you spelled Erica's last name wrong. It's "Kane" as in the late Ruth Warrick's(Phoebe Wallingford) movie "Citizen Kane" not "Cane" as in Cane Ashby played by Daniel Goddard on Y@R or even Cane and Abel.
My junior high school teacher says that soaps are the same as they were 15 years ago and longer. She says that soaps only do social issues(AIDS and alcoholism) when their show is in trouble and only want to boost ratings to keep it alive and money in their pockets. Margaret was a sharp woman who didn't need to make a kings ransom in teaching to know that show business ppl are relatively messed up and never find peace of mind in their lives so she stuck with basics. Education rules smut anyday.
@oneofGodstreasures Amen to that. I know just what you mean. Some of this grief she was displaying was real, as the actress had played her Mom from day one, and had really passed away.
You have to understand that Erica is an overly dramatic character. That is how she was billed as being "over the top"...if you've seen Lucci's other work, she doesn't always get too dramatic but it's Erica's character so it's ok Many also believe she did not win because the Emmys scored in ratings over the "will Lucci win or not?" so viewers tuned in each year and, when not winning, they tuned in the next year. Plus, in the past couple of years, the judges have done poorly on awarding Emmys
This was back in 1994, and critics still considered Susan Lucci's acting a bit campy to be worthy of an Emmy - she would have to wait five years later, in 1999, before she could show them what she was made of!
"Even" Erica is human? More like "ESPECIALLY" Erica is human.......very passionate, very driven, and feels things very deeply. My only problem with this scene is that all these adults are just standing there watching Erica completely break down--and no one thinks to take charge of Bianca and get her out of there.
Sorry kiddies, but she IS a good actress. If you know anything about the charactor of Erica Kane, you know that this is EXACTLY how she would react had she supressed her emotion about her mother's death, and then let it finally dawn on her. The ones that typically badmouth Lucci's work are fans of charactors that dont get as much screen time or notice, therefore they are bitter. Sorry, bad acting WILL get you replaced on a soap...no matter how much of a "staple" you are.
Susan Lucci acted her but off in this scene! My heart actually hurt for her. Bobbi Eakes can also pull off a good funeral scene. Do you remember when Babe orginally died and they had the double funeral with Dixie?
LOL, i just realized something: erica's "breakdown" is alot like those histronics some black people have at the funeral of their loved one, right down to the jumping on the casket and saying dont leave me. all that was missing was the "why her Lord? why her?" and the "take me instead".
@capcomguy07 Right on. I prefer Jess Walton and Jane Elliot anyday over Susan Lucci. People can say Lucci's the best...but that's their own opinion. Some ppl like her some don't. She herself doesn't even think that the red carpets should be rolled out all the time. Life does not necessarily revolve around Erica and now that she's old granny(and basically alone most the time) she's seeing that.
Also, for the idiot who commented on her quote that Mona could die in there and "it's too late for that"...clearly you missed the point. When someone dies, we remain in denial about it for some time. For all of Erica and Mona's fights, she always counted on her mother to be there for her. Despite her success in career and what not, Erica did not know at this point how to move on but she found it in her to continue with her life and she made Mona happy....so she denied that her mother was gone.
@gibbdreamer that's precisely how I feel about Erica/Mona...despite any of their arguing, Mona had the uncanny ability of keeping Erica grounded even if she attempted to make sense of her actions. You don't get any better parent/child relationships on AMC than the Kane family ;)
Finally Erica feels bad for all the horrible things she said to her mom and the horrible way she treated her. And why is Phoebe there? I thought she hated Mona
Phoebe actually spoke at Mona's funeral and said, despite their differences, she had a lot of respect for Mona. I believe she showed up to support Erica. If memory serves me right, she and Erica always got along.
At 0:28, Ruth Warrick as Phoebe must be thinking: I acted with Orson Welles, why am I in the same scene as an overacting untalented actress like Susan Lucci?
jferkfjkj I agree, her acting was totally ridiculous here. It's a shame because Susan Lucci worked with Frances Heflin for almost 25 years at that point, the writers didn't need to have Erica act like that.
There were several times in my life that made me laugh at Erica's pain...when she'd lost first husband Jeff to her opposite but much more easier to handle Mary Kennicott. Or when Tom had enough of her bullshit and married Brooke English. It didn't matter if Hollwood worked out for her or not! Sadly Mona's death was not one where was I laughing.
@cajayson8301 I agree with judges poorly judging. I cant remember the actor's name. But the OLTL Todd Manning execution scene was great and he didnt even get an Emmy nod.
This was one of the most memorable scenes ever from AMC. Erica Kane at her finest.
I haven't seen this scene in a very long time! I'm watching it and it gives me chills!!!
Susan should have won an Emmy for this scene, This is when the actress that played Mona really passed away, and she close close to her..
Yes!
I remember this scene when it first aired and get emotional watching it again. Any one that has lost their mother and/or a long-time viewer of All My Children can identify with Erica..... Great work by Susan Lucci and rest of the cast.

I feel ya there! My mom has been gone 33 years and it feels like yesterday! I miss her so very much
I cried like I had lost a loved one when Mona passed away. I grew up with her.
Me too, and I can't believe she didn't win an Emmy for this story..
I reacted the same way at my son's funeral. I was completely numb until my husband told me we had to leave. I just flipped out saying that Sam needed his bottle and he needed his mom. It's been almost 6 years since I lost him, and the pain is still fresh.
May you find that peaceful place. He is resting well. And still surrounded by love
I am so terribly sorry honey.
So very sorry for your loss...
God bless you and your son.
I'm so sorry
There were so many storylines that Susan Lucci should have won an Emmy for and this is definitely one of them!! I remember watching her thinking this was for sure her Emmy moment! Didn't actually happen until 1999.
Laquana Davis Susan Lucci is a great actress! I loved her in All my Children ! I loved that show!
When you are as close to your parent as Erica and Mona were portrayed to be, the overwhelming sense of loss that comes over you is incredible. I think Lucci was perfect here.
Oh God, just watching that scene brought tears to my eyes - I was also thinking back to when my own mother passed away in September 2008-
La Lucci should have won an emmy this year for this scene. smh!
I felt the EXACT same way!!
holy cow, I remember seeing this and getting very emotional to the point of tears. seeing it again brings back all the tears.
I never saw this. Heartbreaking.
I appreciate good acting and this was amazing acting. First, Erica Kane is over the top but Susan Lucci played the scene as Erica not as Susan who would have grieved differently. This was the episode!
Susan knows how to turn a scene out.
Very heartbreaking this scene is.
WOW.... Im over here crying my damn self. Breaks my heart to see anyone in pain. Especially over the lost of their mother. Well acted Susan Lucci!
true emotions..true life long friends..
Awesome acting by Susan

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING!
I remember watching this when I was little girl with my mom. I felt so sorry for Erica
Chokes me up every time.
How did Lucci not win an Emmy for this performance?
this so makes me cry
wow this really made me cry!
I happen to think this is actually quite good. Susan Lucci pulled off Erica's hysterical sadness beautifully.
i have seen this seen so many times, more times than i care to even count and i still cant watch it without crying, this is susan lucci's best performance, for me at least.
Missed Please Bring it back.I understand
Hands down this is Susan Lucci's best acting
Susan A True DIVA of daytime. This scene made me cry. THANK YOU.
WOW, that is heartbreaking to watch - reminds me of my own mother's funeral-
I remember watching this with my mom and feeling this heavy
I 💘 Susan Lucci she is a Great actress and played Erica Kane so good
The actress who played Mona Kane was Frances Heflin, the sister of actor Van Heflin. check him out in the movie Shane and you'll see a startling resemblance between the two.
I remember these episodes so much. I felt so bad for Erica! Good job, Susan.
I remember keeping my Mom from watching this scene. Her Mom had passed away about 12 years earlier, and she would have been absolutely bawling at this. I forget the excuse I made up, but it worked.
Emmy awards here

A bit overacting, Erica!
Right. Telling how sorry she was, to please come back. It happens when you treat your mom mean. I miss my mom but never treated her mean.
See some people don't know how good they have it until it gone
What a heartbreaking scene - I remember back to my mother's own funeral - that is so sad to watch!!!!!!!!!!
My mom did the same at my papa’s funeral
erica treated mona like crap many times and took her for granted, its sad that she finally realized what her mom meant to her at the burial.
True for many humans in real life, that.
i know what you mean my mom died to and i was so so so sad when i saw this
BRILLIANT!!!!! :D
I'm having soap opera flashbacks of the greats
A few days earlier they were saying Erica was taking the death too lightly.
For the people criticizing Susan in this scene, you must not have been an AMC viewer at the time. I remember this. I remember she kept it in until the funeral.
Soap Opera deserved to be Abridged.
I watched AMC on and off since the early 70s (I stopped watching when they killed off Jenny Gardner). This is extremely hard to watch. Susan does an excellent job on this, as anyone who had lost a parent could see. I don;t think I could watch this scene again. I loved Mona. RIP

You have a lot to learn...the actors and actresses have even said they only judge you on two tapes you submit, not a year's worth of work.
Great acting
This is true to life, as over-the-top as it may seem. Intense grief can easily make you react in a way you wouldn't ordinarily act like. Ask me how I know.......
if she couldnt act then why would she have been on the show from 1970 untill now
erica is great

So! It's still a bit off; regurgitated scene from 'Imitation Of Life." I believe that scene already won awards.
Next!

was that little girl bianca?
It's not a movie. It's a scene from All My Children when Erica's (the woman having a fit over the casket) mother Mona died.
i remeber when she died it was a sad day in soap operas
Poor Erica dealing with the loss of her mother
she doesn't want her mom to be buried in the grave

i love them
jake is so funny

Noooooo! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Why god WHY!!!!!! :-)
rip frances heflin
Finally Erica feels bad for all the horrible things she said to her mom and the horrible way she treated her. And why is Phoebe there? I thought she hated Mona

You're idiots. Both of you.
@vickizspace She did inject a little more "ham" than usual in these scenes, I agree....
I think that y ou had this feeling says how well Lucci acted out the character.
@cajayson8301
I agree with judges poorly judging. I cant remember the actor's name. But the OLTL Todd Manning execution scene was great and he didnt even get an Emmy nod.
