Martha Beck is a great author for this topic. Being an ex-Mormon with loads of intelligence and courage, her understanding about honesty is based in growing up in a shockingly dishonest religion -- much of it manifested as subtle ways of lying by omission and covering up secrets -- largely to protect themselves and defend the "One True" religion.
You have likely heard it said, "You are as sick as your secrets."
She is from Utah, and in the 90s she rebelled against the Mormon church, as well as her family - who didn't want to hear or accept her truth, such as speaking up about being sexually abused by her upstanding and well-known scholarly father. She left the church back then, and chose to share her truth as an author.
The Mormon faith is based in lies, yet the LDS church preaches about honesty as one of its highest values. It is insane how much high demand religions can gaslight and live a bunch of lies, while completely justifying constant dishonesty -- mostly justified by their belief that God speaks directly to their prophets and other leaders .
I truly believe so much of it is embedded in the system, that many Mormons seem to not acknowledge - or even be conscious of their lying much of the time.

I told my daughter from as early as she could understand that she can tell me anything, that I may not always like the truth, but I can deal with the truth. It’s lies that I cannot tolerate. The hard part is then having to follow through with that when your daughter tells you the *absolute* truth about *absolutely* everything…some things that you’d maybe rather not know!😂 It’s worth it though, there was nothing that she didn’t/doesn’t feel safe to tell me. Obviously the same respect has to be given in return, so I’ve always been very honest with her. There are always going to be certain things that it’s not appropriate to tell young children for their own safety/wellbeing or that they’re just too young to be able to understand, but honesty is definitely the best policy!😂

36:51 - So true. I just started telling the truth about my mental health: "Thank you for thinking of me, I am struggling a bit and want to come." - Then I try. If I still can't make it out of the house off the couch, I tell the truth without causing concern. "I'm sorry that I'm missing out. Thank you for your grace, but I'm staying home." -The true blue friends will understand. Be careful not to take advantage, like I did in my 30s. I'm a recovering addict too, and relapsed on Xanax in my 30s. Funny thing: when they keep asking, I keep trying - and end up having a great time!

Y’all. I’m sitting here watching Winnie the Pooh with my kids and I just realized that Piglet sounds EXACTLY like Old Shrimp Nose.
Being polite is not the same thing as lying. You can tell people the truth and still be polite. I think the happy medium is being able to give it to them straight without voicing it like an asshole. Just like some situations call for brutal honesty. They are called that because the truth itself is brutal. It's not permission for the teller to get brutal. In mature communication you can hit that balance which also makes it easier for the recipient to not get defensive.
I also do say, "just seeing this" sometimes cuz I respect people enough to let them know I wasn't ignoring them. I don't do it with people I AM ignoring. That too doesn't have to be a lie. It's etiquette that changes depending on the audience.

Why do I have a feeling that Mae smokes more than "just one" cigarette a day? I get it, I only smoke 3 a day, and it's a way to escape and be alone and kinda just be a bit rebellious because I don't have the energy to be really rebellious any more. Even though I know it's terrible. But it's all I have right now I feel like.
