    I love my speedo snorkel. It’s the best tool (along with a kickboard) I’ve used to help my swimming. My technique has definitely improved a lot.

    I have used a speedo and later finis snorkels for many years and I think my improper use of this tool hampered my ability to learn freestyle. I feel that I subconsciously rotate less when my head doesn't have to move, and also having a headband near my ears changed the trajectory of my entry hand to too wide bcus I want to avoid my bicep hitting it. That's just me and I agree 100% that it is great for kick sets and drills

    Timely video! My newest equiptment is a Finis snorkel. The first 50 or so yards of use I felt tense, but I quickly realized I can trust to snorkel. Flip turns? That will take some practice, and I'll use the tip demonstrated. I would love to see a video on how to handle anxiety at meets :) My anxiety has taken the fun out of meets and I swim better at practices than at meets.

      Just keep practicing the flip turn. It takes some getting used to but you can do it!

    I am asthmatic, I was not able to swim with endurance or with the right technique. The snorkel basically taught me how to swim and I still swim with it. I swim freestyle with him for a year now, learn butterfly with him, when my hips stop hurting, I will also swim breaststroke with him. The technique is improved with it (also with other tools), the endurance is great. My goal is that when I swim 500 km and improve my technique, I will gradually start putting the snorkel away, not before. Greetings from the Czechia.

    Get the snorkel without the purge valve

    I started using a snorkel again and I love it. I'll use it during warm up but I will also use it during a main set if we are swimming 100s to 300s+. I'll try to use it for about half of the main set. I do not use it if we are doing any quality or sprints.

    With a snorkel I have to keep my head more steady. It takes a little while to get used to. I like the Finis stability snorkel. It has a triangular forehead pad instead of a headband cross piece that could break in the swim bag. I put some rubber bands around the upper part of the pad so it fits my face better. The mouthpiece can be turned to the side, which is convenient when not swimming. For me, the mouthpiece would be better with larger bite and flanges. I don't think a purge valve is really necessary, as blowing into the tube clears it anyway.

      The stability snorkel does make a big difference.

    Please assist with the breathing during drills …breathe through mouth and out through mouth or in through mouth and out through nose ..

    I have a question, is it possible to practice swimming using side mounted snorkel instead of front mounted ones?

    • @CoachMattZ
      @CoachMattZ  2 місяці тому

      I would not recommend it. It will flap around like crazy and pull your head to one side. My recommendation is to go to finisswim.com and get yourself a stability snorkel. It's worth the money. And...if you use the code COACHMATTZ you get 20% off!

    Im 'that guy' I guess...Side snorkel works fine and can slide and take it off when needed. Maybe some drag to one side but I am not all that quick anyway.
    Is it good advice to try to breathe at the same time you would if you had no snorkel on? or will that hurt the timing and cause you to breathe too early or too late when the snorkels off and you are trying to swim normally.
    Also for non racer and just fitness, is a snorkel all the time better for shoulder and neck joints?

    • @CoachMattZ
      @CoachMattZ  5 місяців тому

      Hey if it works for you, roll with it!
      When I use my snorkel, I don't try to match up the breath timing to what it would be without the snorkel, but it's probably not a bad idea.
      Ideally you have a stroke that does not hurt your shoulders and neck even without the snorkel. If you are feeling pain when you swim, the first thing I would check in on is your technique. A lot of times pain is caused by poor technique. If your technique is ok and you are still feeling pain, then I would go to the snorkel. Better to use the snorkel all the time than not swim. Hope that helps!

      @@CoachMattZ Ive been trying it out...sort of helps compared to regular breathing. Been swapping when I want the snorkel to focus on my form or if the water is too choppy or even dirty, as normal breathing still makes me choke every so often. I swim in ocean pools.
      I do have a semi worse right shoulder but the issue comes up on the recovery phase.
      But no snorkel feels nicer as you can rotate more, and the side snorkel will turn into a straw if i rotate too much also.
      And snorkel feels more relaxing as you can look down or ahead and relax more, also see people more on busy days.

    Hey coach. I been struggling using snorkel and doing flip turns, any advice?

    • @CoachMattZ

      Get comfortable clearing the water out of it. Just practice that on the wall for a little while. You can also try a nose clip. That helps me. Then it's just practice. It will get easier.
