Why the Skull?! (Memento Mori)

- A few of you have noticed something disturbing here in my classroom. Every once in a while in our videos, this guy can be seen in the background. And, of course, this isn’t a real human skull. Its a replica. But why do I have it? Well, human skulls were often used by monks in the early church as a memento mori-a reminder of their mortality. They would often only have three things in their room: a Bible, a candle by which to read the Bible, and a skull to remind them that life is short so keep things in perspective. The skull is a reminder to live our lives focused not on creature comforts or storing up earthly treasure, which are fleeting, but on eternity and the presence of God. Heaven is our home, and every day is one day nearer. Morbid? Maybe. But it’s also our reality. And the Bible says we have nothing to fear because for followers of Jesus, “Death is swallowed up in victory.”

I love your heart Rob, thanks for sharing! I think it’s a great reminder, life is short. We could eat drink and be merry, but tomorrow we die. Let’s enjoy life but remember our home is in heaven and let’s try to lead as many people to the one that gives us a home there.
Interesting. However, I think I’d rather have a cross, reminding me that I am redeemed and don’t have to fear death.
MAN thats GENIUS. I love this! Its such a good idea.
Amen. "Memento mori" means "Remember you must die."
A similar tradition in art is the "Vanitas" which means "Vanity" = a still life painting that has a skull as one of the featured items & is intended as a meditation on the temporary & fleeting nature of life. Also not unusual to see a Bible &/or other religious symbols in the painting.
"A good name is better than fine perfume,
and the day of death better than the day of birth.
It is better to go to a house of mourning
than to go to a house of feasting,
for death is the destiny of everyone
the living should take this to heart."
(Ecclesiastes 7:1-2)
I learn something new every time I watch your videos.
Psalm 90:12 So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.
Thank you Rob. You’re always interesting!
I was going to ask...
Thanks for sharing. I really enjoy your theology.
Whoa - simple but deep !
The skull I know was not real! ( Teeth are too perfect) but it is a good reminder that our life here is temporary
Amen
That décor "practice" is often pictured with the candle affixed to the top of the skull at All Hallows Eve.
Memento Vivere, Memento Mori. In life and death, we belong to God.
Thank you awesome!
Please don't put the skull on the Bible.
Lost me as soon as you said
Heaven
Why?
@@joe1940 because, we do not go to heaven. Yeshua come BACK to earth and we are to be with him forever after. New Jerusalem descends from heaven to earth. So, when he said he goes away to prepare a place for us, it is in heaven, yes, but it is coming to earth with Yeshua. we will be here on earth even after he makes it anew again. forever and ever.....

2 Corinthians 5:1
I prefer to fix my eyes on Christ.. for to live is Christ .. and Gal 5:16 "But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh." morbid yes.. the law of the Spirit of Life is effective too
You need to listen to it again.
BTW, Ecclesiastes 7:1-2.
