About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
I think people in their 30’s would like the title tweaked
Noted!
I'm 38 and I'm completely screwed as well. I'm living in Hamburg, Germany. I could probably afford owning real estate in the countryside, but as long as I stay where I am, I won't be able to. The rent for my apartment is super cheap, people around me pay 3-5 times as much. So I got no reason to move, I just was incredibly lucky.
When I tell people where I live they automatically assume I'm super rich.
Yeah, but people in their 30’s should also be concerned about other things than a mean guy on the internet. If the title concerns you, it means you (should) have everything else sorted out hence, it doesn’t apply to you.
(BTW: Sorry if I come out as offensive, this is nothing personal against anyone.)
Woah it's so weird when people need to be right more than laugh at a dumb joke oh BTW I'm not talking down to anyone specifically it's just a strange thing to feel a need to correct people on UA-cam comments
I agree the title needs changing. This video is an ad for kali speakers... blah
Finally, a pair of speakers I can use to mix in my cardboard box on the street! Thank goodness I stopped eating that avocado toast for two days so I could get me a pair of these lol.
It's not just Gen Z. It's everyone.
And not only in canada and america... we are f*cked
I’m 42. You’re completely screwed if you’re over 30 too.
I'm 56. I cry into my imitation raisin bran every morning.
Lol
It’s alright I buy store brand everything to
@@tacolightningyt3639 Or just make it if you can. I make my own peanut butter.

Try 41. Convince your folks to inherit you their home. Won't be easy though.
@@jaconova You mean to tell me I'm one boating accident away from home ownership!? Hell yeah!
@@jaconova Assuming that your parent(s) own a home, and aren't equally poor. Oh joy.
@@jaconova What do you mean it won't be easy? That isn't a _common_ thing? What else would they do with it? I just assumed everyone gets their parents homes automatically, after perishment. EDIT: Nevermind, I just read your other comment, I understand your situation now. That's a shame, sorry to hear. I'm surprised they would sell, rather than just keep it as their forever home but I guess some people want to go out with a bang.. hopefully not literally, don't want that image in your head.
Thank you State Street and BlackRock and Vanguard
Fr. Let’s not forget people like Soros and the Rothschild, that’s the tip of the iceberg of beyond rich, let alone the elites that have politicians in their pockets.
If it makes anyone feel better, I'm 26, work in a Canadian studio full time, but my mixes still suck and I'll also never own a home.
Awesome vid Glenn!
I'm sure it makes others under 30 feel so much better 😃
Thank you.
You should list your 5 biggest fears some day, here's my best guess:
1) Pasta
2) Headphones
3) Mixing a modern pop album complete with auto tune (gotta admit, it's on my list too).
4) Software compression plugins
5) USB fader banks that cost 10000% less than a hybrid Neve Console.
Bass playing, mime clowns.

As a virgin i have never been screwed. I think at this point getting screwed might be harder than buying a house
just what I needed after getting home on a Wednesday! thanks for keeping all my hopes sky high ❤
As a man closer to 40 than 30s these day: no, we do not stand a chance. Regardless of the topic or focus. Also…what a strange title for a video about studio monitors
That's clickbait for you, he makes decent videos but I CANNOT STAND the clickbaity titles that don't tell you at all what the video is about.
I'm 31...
What do I win?
Oh nevermind, everything is still 💩either way.
Dude same. I'm 31. Laying here on my couch sick out of my mind. And this just made me go oof even worse
As a 25 year old in the music business, thank you for telling the truth
Same. Xd😂
At some point in the future the nostalgia about being thirty will make people view this time in their lives through rose-colored glasses and everything old will become new again. You might even say the eventual new mindset could be called... Vintage 30.
Loopback is a hell of an awesome piece of software, too! I love practically everything Rogue Amoeba makes and that has saved me an incredible amount of time with routing audio around in the past. Totally and completely worth it! Farrago was really neat a while back too when I needed soundboarding.
These look good! I'm building a studio in my backyard garden shed and these ought to be a good fit.
I’ve got a mortgage but I’ve given up getting my mixes more than mediocre. It’s not my monitors or my headphones or my room. I just can’t hear it. Oh well it’s good enough for people to hear what I’m trying to do.
wow, these look super cool. I love my LP 6 v2s. Makes mixing so easy especially in concert with Sonarworks Sound ID reference software, I am a fan of Kali that's for sure. First found them through this channel, thanks Glen!
Please note, Kali offers a longer phoenix connector (the wire that connects the main to the passive) if needed. Great review as alwaysssssss!!!
"OKAY BOOMER"
"OKAY RENTER"
😂😂😂
$299 is a nice price. The small monitors before that were something like $500-800 or so. The USB-C is a brilliant idea for many reasons. Lower chance of cable failure, I can switch between regular speakers and the Kali easily without having to buy a separate DAC, etc.
Another really good set of budget studio monitors i would recommend are the
PreSonus Eris E3.5. Absolutely fantastic sound quality especially for 3.5 inch monitors under £100.
While they're a great idea...up/down buttons for volume? Yeah, they lost me there. There's absolutely no excuse for ignoring the fact that a pot is a _vastly_ superior (and cheaper, and road-tested) way to do it. That's why we don't have up/down buttons on amps - apart from anything, if you need to very quickly turn it down, you can't do it with buttons.
Yes, there's the argument that pots can go scratchy over time, but...the same phenomenon affects push-button switches, except that the switches just stop working at that point and then you're completely boned.
On the other side you can dial them both exactly at the same volume without any balance discrepancies. Oh, and push button switches are waaay more serviceable and cheaper than potentiometers.
@@ggaabb_ - those things might be true, were it not for the fact that a) only the main monitor has the volume control, which acts for both and thus will never have any balance discrepancy (just like a single volume pot), and b) these are touch switches, which degrade over time and cannot be replaced easily given that they're based on surface-mount components...unlike a volume pot, which can be replaced by anybody with passing acquaintance with a soldering iron.
It's not like anyone is ever going to use that anyway, it's just gonna be always cranked to the max and the volume will be controlled at the source, e.g. windows volume control
How often are you gonna be turning your monitors up and down? I've always just set and forget. If I need to adjust volumes I can do that on my monitoring FX.
@@ggaabb_ so just use a rotary encoder or digipot
5:19 i envy you Glenn!!!...such a monster console!!!!...Cheers dude!
I’m very curious to hear your thoughts on how tubes in the power section of the amp change tone ie: 6l6 vs el34 vs el84. I’ve been watching your channel for a bit over a year, yes I hit the subscribe button, you have the 5150, The Soldano and The Mesa Boogie amps there. All fantastic amplifiers! They are all powered by 6l6 tubes. Is there a test that can be ran to see how or even if different power tubes change tone? Also, eminence speakers, I’ve been using their Patriot Swamp Thang for years! Popped one in my Fender Tube amp, Blues Junior, and one in my solid state cab for my Orange Crush 120. No complaints.
I'm not sure this commercial is improved by leading with inter-generational warfare. But alas, I applaud your acceleration of the coming day-of-the-pillow.
I do mix on head phones but I do think it comes out okay. May get a pair of them Kali monitor thingy stuff. They are sold as a pair which is an excellent plus in my book.
Great bought those kali 6.5" ones ( they are big), and these are available. Would have been a better fit for me. Oh well, they sound great, just way bigger then I would have thought. 👍👍
Welp, you had me for the first 1 minute 30, but I don't need an extra advert about shit I still can't afford mate. Not under 30 btw, I'm 54, and can't afford that shit!
'Why didn't you buy a house when you were two?' -America
@@DjDoggDad Realistically, it was just pre-covid when houses should have been bought.
@@hhaste Correct, the 70's were before the pandemic
Hey Glenn there's something I wanted to ask you, what do you use for I/O? (Also I really am waiting for the mix breakdown)
I’m fortunate enough to have parents who worked hard and lived well under their means. Now they’ve bought some property and left the house I grew up in to me. I really hope for the best for everyone out there. Stay strong
I’m curios (and ignorant), is there a special acoustic treatment required for this type of monitors? I mean, having in mind the “bedroom-studio-class-hero” of these (and forthcoming) years, apart from the guide and switches on the rear side, did Kali have some non-preferred acoustic environment in particular? I definitely would like to get this pair, yes sir!
Cheers and thanks!
My Yamaha HS8s are awesome. Checked it with pink noise and the graph is flat. Sound amazing.
i calculated numerically , 90.93% of this video is about a pair of speakers , leaving only 9.07% of this already short video to actually be about the thing that the title says it is. that is less than a minute. and the speakers section also includes belittling some poor guy who enjoys the channel enough to submit their music for feedback too
i am genuinely shaken by the absolute philosophical nightmare that this video has presented to me
my soul has shrunk away from me
glenn, what are you doing
perfect username for that particular comment, 'cause aren't we all?
The clip of Lahey falling down his trailer stairs was gold! Lol
3:40 really loving that bass sound.
Again I'm blown away by sound coming out that tiny speaker in my phone.
assuming we have a completely clean desk to set these things on.
What happens when you put speaker on the side? I have both of my Kali LP8's on their sides for space.
That nice touch at 3:52 when you pause the mix and the bass player can't end on the beat with the rest of the band, as usual.
Surprisingly for once you're actually correct about something being affordable, at least in terms of studio equipment, with my monthly "budget" if you can even call it that, I'd still have to save up to get these though. However thankfully I am not trying to get the next best magical tone pickups on any of my guitars anytime soon, so I'll put it on my massive "maybe list".
90% of this video is a paid ad. This is why we will never afford a home. 💀
I still want Kali lp8's.🥰🍻
We use those Kali LPs. They work very nicely as they do not color the sound.
Glenn really found the one picture for thumbnails, and will run with it till the cows come home.
Thanks for the reminder Glenn, lol
Glenn, I’m looking for some good cab sims that work with iOS. Any suggestions?
Sounds like a set of speakers i want for my stereo.
I forget the name of the studio in Toronto, other then it was in Chinatown. But they had 3 sets of speakers in their control room. And every single one sounded different.
Hmm, if only the same could be said for amp speakers.
Are you sure? I'm pretty sure that plus/minus thingy is for letting me choose how new or old my bass strings are
Have you been actually doing the mix reviews recently? I am subbed and hit the bell and don’t get notified… I want you to hear my new single.
I see you're using some kind of Apple laptop... an M1 perhaps? What kind of break out box are you using? I've been playing with some old MacBook Pros that have lots of ports but the newer Mac just have two USB C ports so a break out box is need. Thumbs up on another great video!
Volume buttons instead of a pot or a dial whatever... Nnnaah, not very awesome when you gotta get the volume adjusted down FAST. But that's just me and I don't know if they thought about that. Anyway...
So, while I don't dispute that speakers trump headphones for mixing every day, Christmas and Mother's Day included... If one knows what to do (that little clip you had there, the mixing dude had no idea) won't it be possible to come up with good results with good speakers?
I mean, I just about have an idea what to expect from my Edirol MA-15D's (Ooold as fuck but they do the trick) and I have an idea how my headphones differ. Theoretically, knowing the difference - in my case a sligtly more pronounced bottom end on the headphones, for instance, you COULD come up with decent results.
Of course, that requires having a familiar set of proper monitors. Cuz headphones alone without a reference aren't gonna cut it.
Is my take yay or nay? I recall you touching on this topic somewhere earlier.
Glen: Check out THIS mix
Me on fake airpods: Hmm yeah i can definitely hear more clarity now
The title of the video should be changed to “Why you’re completely screwed…” and that’s it 😂😂😂
It should be changed to "how my generation screwed millennials and gen Z's out of everything that was in perfect reach for my generation" Seriously... this video title is so cringe and tone deaf. He's like hahahah you're screwed... welp I got mine and let me sell you something that you don't need right now! What a joke Glen has become. But I don't blame him necessarily 100%, I blame truly the UA-cam business model...
I'm a Brazillian 36yo and I feel screwed already! Thanks, man!
Wow! That was great 😂
How do they compare to the ik multimedia desktop speakers, they cost the same
Is it a mortal sin to use these in the horizontal orientation? My main issue is I don't have the desk real estate to have them properly vertical
This is an elaborate commercial
His whole channel with every video is an elaborate commercial
@@onlyguitar6521ehhhh, not _every_ video, he has QUITE a few negative reviews that don't seem to advertise shit
Let’s get Glenn to 1 million subs!
We need a whole compilation of Frickups n Bloopers. ur welcome
I do like the idea of having a second set of speakers, but without a subwoofer, I don't see them working as my sole set of monitors.
I'm gen z and there's a really good chance I'll be a homeowner one day. Nepotism goes hard 💀
you guys think it is worth upgrading from the gen 1 LP6?
glenn, how can you have a 100 bajillion dollar Neve console, a studio full of tube amps, mic pres, compressors, eq's, what'soo nots, but still use monitors with built in dsp in them?
GLEEENNN! How do these compare to the Kali IN-UNF "Balls"? I am trying to create a mixing space in a room I can not do sound treatment in (apartment). I'm sure either would be better than the headphones I have been using for years.
I own monitors and a sub, but can't use them in my untreated room. I'm happy with my mixes produced on high quality headphones.
Finally, a TPB reference on Spectre. Took long enough
Well, at least I'm not screwed, so there is that.
So can I use these as 'casual' speakers as well? Like do both mixing and listening to Spectresoundstudios on them?
Seems like these are only supposed to be within arm's reach. So, maybe desk-only rocking out?
Though it looked like Glen survived them being farther out.
Goddamit Glenn, you need to chill with clickbait titles, I almost didn't watch this video as I tend to ignore them, but I thought ah what the hell and now I'm off to thomann to order these!
Those places you were mentioning about living costs were all in Canada, i noticed... are you a fellow Canadian Glen!!?!? I am literally Stevie T's local garbage man here in Ontario. Dude id looooove to come record something in that studio of yours!! Im trying to find a half decent one around here.
I mean, Zakk Cervini mixes on airpods...
I don't really think you can hear that something was mixed on headphones. I think it just so happens that people starting out are mixing on headphones more often than not, because that's what they have.
But those Kalis look good. I was thinking of getting IK iLouds for mixing at home.
That's probably because he (I assume) uses the mentality that the audience is going to be listening on airpods, most likely, so mix on whatever they'll be using so it sounds good in those.
@@hhaste You phrased that like it's the wrong mentality. Zakk's mixes sound awesome anywhere. And 99.99% of people sure as hell won't be listening on studio monitors, so what gives? The important thing is that you know your speakers or headphones.
Realistically these days most people listen to music on their phones with headphones and earbuds (if you are lucky...) so mixing for those conditions actually makes a fair bit of sense imho
Looks like they sell 8' interconnects for them, so you could get your spread on!
Studio monitors would be great if I didn't live in an apartment with crazy AF neighbours. Until then, it's headphones. Then most of my friends or family listen to my tunes on their phone (with no headphones) anyway...
GLENN I’m in a band where it’s just me playing a bass guitar and my friend playing drums. Do you have any tips on how to mix my sound properly for a distorted bass sound that’s beefy in the mix but has enough treble for my solos to stick out?
Multi track. Then pan and process the tracks as if they were separate instruments.
@@sparella Thanks 🙏 for the tip. I relay appreciate it.
This is a great video Glen, very straightforward breakdown.
Cheers from a fellow Gen X who owns his own home. Here in Northern Ontario they're a little cheaper than down southern Ontario.
Guilty, headphone mixer here. Not just that, I also use Windows. Cost was never my concern, sound was. Having a room mate or a duplex neighbor means I can never mix late at night. You know, when you're home from your day job. Anyway, headphone eq correction has been a godsend, but MY GOD is it fucked up on Windows with ASIO. I'm looking to buy a cheap IR loader pedal to use as a hardware DSP for my heaphones.
Is there any chance you could go further into tips on how to preserve your hearing when mixing/recording? I've had my comments on the show before and in case you don't remember, I'm fully Deaf with a cochlear implant. I didn't go Deaf as a result of loud music, but having had to spend a year with either no or barely minimal hearing before I received the implant, I know how crap it is when you are a musician who simply can't hear. And the implant isn't magic - I'm always going to be impaired in my creating/mixing/etc music.
So if you could make a video about how to preserve your hearing in the studio, that'd be great as I know a lot of people - especially of my generation - think they are either immune to hearing loss, or that it's "worth it". ...It really fucking isn't worth it.
I like those budget monitors, though I'm guessing I can't put gaffer tape on those LED's? I have nerve damage and hyper sensitive to light.
How about those red biohacking stickers intended for blue LEDs? I use them on annoying devices.
@@sparella I normally use gaffer tape, though it sometimes needs a few layers on certain devices
Possibly dumb question, is there any reason *not* to use these as regular desktop speakers as well as monitors? Other than hearing other people's bad mixes
Nope! Would just be an upgrade over your standard pc speakers.
fuck you got me at okay renter lol. I've pretty much accepted that
does the usb c works also on windows with an external soundcard ?
Yes
I’m 34 and own a home but I work my ass off and I’m getting a BSBA in accounting
As someone in my 30’s I can safely say that we too are screwed.
this is an add for speakers
The problem with the pictographs is there are people who don't know what the > symbol means.
I’ll mention that to Kali
Are they better than Yamaha HS7?
I can't believe this boomer just ranted about zoomers not being able to afford anything and then quickly turned it into an advertisement for speakers.
mfw i forget that gen x exists and were the first to feel the burn
Never have I felt so personally attacked by the intro of an advert. Kudo,s I guess.
I‘m 30 and I don’t expect to own real estate in any reasonable amount of time.
51 and I'll never own my own house...and as the speakers are $649 here in Australia, I doubt I'll ever own these speakers either.
Mainly good idea, but the volume control is a definite no no for me.. powerful speakers and a slow vol up/down... just no. Unless there are features like double-tapping for mute or drop/raise faster. Are they powered off USB? Can see Kali is really looking at trying to break the bedroom studio market and good on them for that. They certainly seem more practical than the balls with the supra magnet sub!
Dude I'm almost 34 I don't play guitar for money(wish I could) but I love playing and I've been playing since I was 16
Who's buying all these houses in my "village" 30 min from DT Ottawa . It's freaking nuts, there's like thousands of houses just built or being built ... If it's not the younger gen , who's buying em , how are they buying em . Nuts just nuts
interesting, but i'll probably stick with my eris 5's.
Yep. 27 here and it’s sad but true.
I left Canada 5 years ago and moved to Korea. I am extremely fortunate here, as I've been able to completely eliminate my debt, buy a home and a car. If I still lived in Canada, I'd have no choice but to live with my dad....who is strangely very similar to Glenn in terms of appearance, voice, and build also with family roots from a similar area as Glenn....
I mean tbf. My buddies under 30 and just bought his own home. Albeit hes like me and started construction at 11 and had a helpful family unlike me. Let alone not having to lay for funerals in their early 20s.
I live in rural Saskatchewan and grow my own food in the garden so I can afford to take piano lessons while living in Canada lol
As someone who is 30, we're completely fucked in this decade of life, too. The difference is now we're slower and have to be more cautious about our physical health because we feel 20, but our bones have no issues reminding us that we are not
