15 years ago I was diagnosed diabetic. Went on Atkins, then low carb, then Keto, then ketovor -- I now eat mostly meat, dairy, nuts, berries and an occasional salad or pickles or sauerkraut. My blood sugar is normal and I have lost 100 lbs. I am now 76. There are many different kinds of Mediterranean diets so if one is recommending one they need to be specific.

In my opinion the Mediterranean diet has always come out top ! I don’t think you can beat it, I’ve never been a big meat eater but i love fish, i have salad and nuts every day and try to eat as much veg and fruit as possible, i like a glass of red wine as a treat so i never feel deprived, im happy with this way of eating and hope to continue for ever eating like this ! I don't consume a lot of grains either, although daily oatmeal is my staple, so I'm exploring that. But what got me most interested in reviewing his body of work was the gut health stuff and how that interfaces with our whole body, (stands to reason, right?). So one of my New year's agenda items is to include much more fermented food and to make my own yogurt. Gotta start somewhere!

Hi! It was great to meet you too and thanks for saying hello. I haven't used the Zoe app (or any others) though I know a few people who have found Zoe really helpful.
Some people really benefit from using an app to guide and motivate them but others, like me, find they don't stick with them so I think it's a very personal decision.
I just try to eat a balanced diet of whole foods, keep my sugar intake as low as possible (including reducing starchy foods), avoid processed foods, stop eating before I feel full, move frequently and exercise daily. Those basic habits really do go a long way.
      Hope that helps!

Thanks for the report. This is interesting. With nutrition, sometimes it takes years to sort out what were the true dependent variables. So, I wonder A) Did they really statistically isolate egg consumption or was increased egg consumption inadvertently statistically lumped with the fact that British people eating eggs also were eating more processed meat in the form of sausages, bacon, bangers and hash, etc.? B) Were they really isolating for eggs or for conventional factory raised eggs and what would the results be if just looking at organic truly pastured eggs? C) Did they really isolate out whole grains or did whole grains end up as a statistical "ride along" for people who weren't eating refined grains? Since most people eat grains, did they really look at if people would have equally good (or better) results if they ate no refined grains and also no grains at all?

Be careful about conclusions. Bear in mind that because one must eat something, the addition of any element means the reduction of another. Cause and effect are rarely obvious. For example, if one drinks milk instead of a sweetened soda, is the benefit the reduction of high fructose corn syrup or the addition of lactose? Is reduction of meat the key, or addition of veggies (that lead to meat's reduction by displacement)? If good fat displaces carbs, was the benefit that the nutritionally dense fat was good or the insuline stimulating carbs bad? Beyond all this is the problem that some diets also stimulate physical exercise.

I believe that apparently 80% of TV viewers watch Commercial TV on a regular basis. That's Reality shows, banal comedies, infotainment, sing-song shows, dancey shows, cooking shows, hospital dramas, cop dramas survival shows.. (not much in that lot to enhance a University course, eh? Certainly not an erudite polymath's breakfast) and get their health advice from adverts...I guess that explains it.

Yes, Valter Longo, PhD, has written a book on his Longevity Diet. He did 25 + years of research for this. He is the developer of ProLon, the fasting mimicking diet (FMD). He has done a lot of research into how to allow chemo patients to have the best outcomes with minimal nausea and it turns out fasting is the way. With an FMD, you are able to eat a small amount of regular meals but it stays under the body’s radar in the sense that your body thinks you are fasting and therefore you get the benefits of fasting without actually fasting.

Red meat is one of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet. All animals (including us) have a species appropriate diet -- the diet we evolved to eat. Cows eat grass, lions eat meat, etc... We have evolved for almost 3.5 million years eating meat and limited plants that we foraged for until the advent of agriculture about 10,000 years ago. There was no true grocery stores until less than 100 years ago. How can meat suddenly be unhealthy? It's the centerpiece of a proper human diet. And the blue zones? With the exception of CA are very meat heavy eaters--but that was left on the cutting room floor. Follow the research of Mary Ruddick to learn what they really eat in the blue zones.

I wish you had a group that ate red meat but not sugar. They were lumped in together and given the same results. The evidence shows the sugar is the culprit, not the red meat. There have been so many documented cases of red meat having the exact opposite effect of what it is said to have. It is a very necessary food. I am not on board with the carnivore approach, except where it is used as medicine to clear up a medical condition.

I am sorry I got the country wrong: Korean cuisine is largely based on rice, vegetables, seafood, and meats
Hong Kong has one of the highest life expectancies in the world. According to the United Nations, the current life expectancy for Hong Kong in 2023 is 85.29 years 1. This is due to a decline in deaths from infections in children and adults, better treatment for cardiovascular and chronic diseases, and rapid economic growth and social capital, including education, over the past 50 years 1. The Hong Kong population has also maintained lower body mass index and blood pressure than most Western countries, and lower rates of smoking in women 1.
According to a report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the countries that consume the most meat per capita are Hong Kong, the United States, Australia, Argentina, New Zealand, Spain, Israel, Samoa, Portugal, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines 1@@bubus682

The body makes all the carbohydrates we need. You can add them, but they are not necessary in any quantity.

I’m always amazed at people’s citing of “the Mediterranean diet” when the foods shown bare little actual resemblance to the wide variety of foods those people of the Mediterranean eat, yes fish, yes to a lot of what is shown in the “Mediterranean diet” food list, but they always conveniently forget to show the aged meats hung in Italian delis or the amount of butter the French use in all things consumed.
It’s just so hilariously American to think you’ve got the answer to the question with never having spent any actual time in the places, or cared to investigate what even the “unhealthy” of the healthy Mediterranean countries eat. You’d think my looking at the foods shown/listed in the pictures and articles that it was basically fish, leaves, olives, and seeds. Whoops! Forgot to mention the 1/2 of butter eaten over two meals a day and/or the half lb of dry-aged pork loin and the bread dipped in pork fat.
    Fat doesn’t make you fat.

It’s simply an analysis of a very large amount of data so it shouldn’t be dismissed because we rarely see studies of this size which is why I chose to flag it.

You might be interested in this study concept that I just invented myself about sunburns:
      Results
From 10 millions of people with sunburns in summer, 90% of them had eaten ice-cream in the previous days.
We adjusted for smoking, physical activity and BMI.
      Conclusion
Ice cream is the cause of sunburns. The correlation is so clear that it can't be anything else.

@@TerriblePerfection We deliberately feed farm animals supplements such as b-12 so that the meat has traces of nutrition. The problem with this is that your vitamins are now being consumed with dietary cholesterol, animal protein, saturated fat and other things of dubious quality. In terms of overall health I believe raw vegan and proper supplementation is the way to go.
