Definitely agree with you on the fluffing. Be gentle & don't over do it too often and the worms get a lot of benefit from it!
I learn the hard way most of the time. In this deep of a bin it can go sour in a month. In shallow ones it might not be as necessary. Thank you for watching 😃
Awesome tips for success!! Thanks for the shout out!! Yes, it was the amazon tape with strings imbedded that gave the worms trouble, they left all the strings! I have done the exact same thing accidentally with worm castings & cocoons where the kitty litter lid got closed and yes...worst smell ever!!! I also drilled holes in the sides of my kitty litter worm castings storage container...great minds think alike!! Or more likely, I learned it from you!!!😀I just had my first Boba tea ever so this should be fun to see if the worms eat the pearls!! Awesome video Ann!!🪱🪱🪱
I think it is just big tapioca. Maybe just sugar and starch. We will see.

That was cool - I don't think I have ever seen any carrot bits grow that way in any of my systems. Probably because of almost all my worm food being frozen before being fed to the worms :) I had the same exact thing with the auto-closing lid happen on a batch of in-storage castings - boy, oh boy did that stuff stink... pee ew!

The European Night Crawlers are very cool. I'm growing out my first lot of them. I bought cocoons and a small handful of adults, and they are just starting to hatch out in big numbers now.
With regards to the vegetables sprouting, is it worthwhile letting them grow for a couple of weeks or so in the bin then removing the sprouting tops and feeding them to the worms as greens? I get a lot of sprouting pumpkin and melon seeds in my Red Wiggler bins and I rip them up and feed them back in. I'm not sure if they have much nutritional benefit for the worms but they definitely get eaten.
Thanks for the great video. I've got a cheap supplier with big blue drums and I might get one or two to try copying your Big Blue bins.
From what I understand, sprouts are very good nutrition. I just flip mine under when i see them. I hope you get a chance to have bin like blue. it is so much fun. Thank you for watching!
How many air holes do you think are necessary? I use a plastic tote bin as my container. It has 6 quarter inch diameter holes on each side which I believe are designed for child suffocation prevention. Is the simple diffusion of air in and out of the bucket all that is necessary?
I leave the top open so no airholes are necessary. if you do want a lid then yes a few holes each side to vent out the CO2 and methane and allow oxygen back in is enough.😀🪱👍🏼

Pumpkin scraps with seeds in.. is this ok to add to worm farm? Cant see how seeds would be broken down?
Yep I do it all the time. The seeds will sprout at some point and then you pull them and feed them right back.👍🏼🪱😀
I remember when you were testing the 'compostable' food bags that said they were compostable and seemed not bothered worms

After 4 days I went to take the bag for the worms
Imagine my horror after putting said bag on the floor while I rinsed out the tin and picked up thebG ready for the freezer
And had rotting food over the kitchen f.oor
I know now to empty daily or wait for the week but carry the kitchen cmpost bin round with me
They Re now made of a type of corn starch I think

maybe they are waxed?, I am in perputal dispute with everyone around me to know if they use natural wax or syntetic, if you have to guess its syntetic, wich is not natural
@@redmonkey3556 the ones we get delivered feel powdery so I doubt they are waxed
And when I said they fell to pieces it was not, it was more like the bag had dissolved in patches hard to explain but when I looked it seemed like patches were no longer there
Our old ones were a dark green but these are very pale and translucent

@@hazel552 Sorry for the late response but no I do not live in the UK but in France and ours come with weird stripes, a tiny bit translucient wich is suspicious to me, they degrade well in my worm bin, but i'm still not sure if they are 100% natural, and the shops that have them dont even know.
What's the best feed?also if I start with 1000 aprox how many could I have in 3mnths.thnx
Depending on your goals. If you want to grow them big to go fishing. Use a worm chow mix. I use equal parts alfalfa meal, wheat flour, corn meal, ground bird seed. To 4 liters of prepared meal I will add about a 500g of ground egg shell to help with digestion. If in ideal conditions -Temperature and moisture, fed well and they have enough room, they will double in population every 3 months. Thank you for watching.

Is it possible to feed your worms daily? Everyone i watch feeds weekly/monthly.
But i want to get rid of my foodwaste every day and don't want to save it al in my freezer.
We're a household of 3 and eat a moderate amount of fruit and veggies.
How many worms do i need to process this amount daily?
6 months ago i've started a bin with 1kg of compost worms (mix) and i feed them weekly now but want to change that
So is it possible to feed daily and how can i do that without getting in trouble.

If I tried to guess you need to use up 2 tea cups of food a day. You would need 5 worm bins with a kg of worms each. The worms bins need to be mature or over 6 months old first. If it was me I would feed in one corner daily in a different bin. At day 5 you could start over in bin 1 but feed in a different corner. That way the food would be almost gone when you refeed the bin.👍🏼🪱😁

So your preference is 5 smaller bins instead of 1 large one? and do you mean 5 separate bins or can it also be a stackable system?
what size bin do you recommend for 1kg worms? How does that work with the maturity of the bins, which always starts again after harvesting? Or does that maturity remain in the bin when you do a horizontal migration?

M6 biggest problem is dryness. Without human intervention, humidity is about 30%
You are north of me I bet winter is hard. Are your summers warm enough to need air conditioning?
@Plant Obsessed Sometimes in Saskatchewan, yes. I don't know about where I'm living now. I haven't experienced a summer here yet. The funny thing is that this place is rainy year round and the houses here are damp so I cannot tell why mine is so dry. I wonder if there's a built-in dehumidifier that's hidden.

Why not get spider to help with the nats? I don't think killing is the first choice you should go to. Try jumping spider not only are they super cute they are pretty awesome to watch. When they feel the need they move on lol go find a jumping spider I swear they will help they need light and day so you would have to go every day or try a different spider type it works for me any how love the video thanks for the info

How to tell your coir bed is too wet
If you have a hand full and it is so wet it has many drips when you squeeze it. This is how I check.

How often do worms need to eat fruit and vegetables? They're outside, and the aren't in a container.
If you have an area you feed them I would make sure you peek in the area and see when the food is gone. It sounds different than the set ups I have.
@@PlantObsessed They act like spoiled brats one day, and like soilers the next.
I put 2 big sweet pumpkins in the center of the compost pile in the cool season. So they'd have something easy to get to and eat; whilst keeping them warm. It's been 5 monthes and it still looks like a number 10 can of pie filling out there. But if I give them random kitchen scraps, they eat it almost instantly.

@@tiffany7023 weird. Pumpkin is usually the first to go. Trust the worms. If they are not ready to eat it. There is a reason. If it has a hole for them to get in them it is only a matter of time.
