  • How to build and set up a homemade Canadian Nightcrawler worm farm. Dew worms, or nightcrawlers are one of the most popular fishing baits out there. They can get expensive if you fish a lot. For the cost of bait for just a couple of fishing trips, you can set up your own bait farm to raise Canadian nightcrawlers at home and have an endless supply of fishing worms.

I used to work for a guy that raised Nightcrawlers and Rabbits. He had the Rabbits above the nightcrawlers in cages and their waste fed the Dirt and kept the dirt in great shape for the Nightcrawlers. We continually put newspapers on top of the nightcrawlers and kept the newspaper wet. He also put cornmeal on the worm bed to help feed them. He had so many Nightcrawlers especially large that he made himself very wealthy doing this. He also had Lots of buildings with these. He was selling these across quiet a few States. He done more business with the worms than the Rabbits.

I’m a 73 year old and I raised my worms until a tornado destroyed everything. Your pleasant demeanor and informative video have made me decide to get some more worms. I never thought about going to a bait shop and buying night crawlers to raise. I have a small lake behind my house that I stocked with channel cats and bass about 20 years ago. While we’re on the subject of bait, a nice size minnow tank (metal cow tank) would be a nice addition to my pier. Thank you for sharing.

For the last couple year's what I been using for bait is frozen raw shrimp. At Walmart you can buy a bag of raw shrimp for like $5-6 dollars and pick out the size of shrimp you want. I normally go fishing once per week so a bag normally last me around 2 months.
Where I live and go fishing at catfish goes crazy over shrimp and can get saugeye as well. It's more simple for me to keep couple bags of shrimp in the freezer. The day before I go fishing I can pull out some bait to thaw out.

In Ireland when I was a kid I was able to dig a bean tin of nightcrawlers in less than a hour the money (£1 a tin ) I used to buy my first bait fishing rod and reel. 30 years later I only fly fish but because of covid-19 my brother has no work and asked me to teach him to fish . I bought a new bait fishing rod and reel and the same for my brother. The night before we went fishing it felt like I had dug up half of the north of Ireland and got (0) blackhead worms......so I went online (Ebay ) wow they so expensive. I just started a small little farm today. I’m an avid kayak fisher and I get so tired or running to the store every two trips or so for more worms so I went and got stuff today to start doing this. I spent about $20 bucks but that was for two containers of worms 60 a container with lid a bag or organic soil and some powder cricket food that I was told worked great for feeding. I have enough soil left to change the soil out and enough of the cricket food to last several several months looking forward to never buying worms again @ $5/6 a cup.

Liked your video and it brought back memories from my childhood. Living down here in Connecticut ( USA) we would go to the local golf courses at night using a flashlight with white plastic over the lens. The night crawlers are sensitive to light and vibrations so you had to walk softly and move quick to grab them. The greens produced the most and bigger ones. When we would travel to Vermont we always had to bring night crawlers since they were scarce up there. Made a lot of friends too !!! Keep up the good work.

Thank you for this video! How important is it to have three layers of your mix rather than one, maybe with a little more of each product? Can you disturb the layers without mixing them to check for smaller worms? Also, would it be a realistic goal to raise these in the next few months to sell for bait or would they not be matured enough? Thank you!

Sir this was by far one of the best video's as it relates to Canadian Nightcrawlers, I am not a fan of Red Wigglers although they are easy enough to raise. I have the perfect little shed to do this in. I have already installed a sun screen fabric that is suppose to reduce the temperature by 15 degrees during the summer months and the little out building is already positioned in the shade. It does have electric so I am installing a small A/C that I will run during the hot months. My question is, it gets pretty cold here in Arkansas so during the cold months should I be prepared to provide heat? What is the ideal "ROOM" temperature to maintain thus raise a heard of Fish Tempting Canadian Nightcrawlers? Thanks for a great heads up video.

They're all over here in Virginia, pick 'em up in a parking lot after a rain or at night... hundreds are there for the taking, I've seen 'em in several places. I usually keep several dozen in a tub full of dirt, I feed 'em buttermilk, cereal, grits, bread, sugar, corn bread, table scraps. They seem to like it....I keep a light on to keep 'em in, but laid a small piece of wood on top of dirt so they would come up to eat..
