  • Dear Friends, Music Lovers & Musicians,
here comes the second concert recording of Ustadji. A wonderful Raga Marwa - played at the Rasa in Utrecht on 25th April, also part of the European Tour 2003.
I remember that Marwa was still in the air when we returned to the Hotel after the concert. Khan Sahib was singing phrases and explained a few details of the Raga. What a great evening.
In the second half Ustadji played a sweet Khamaj, as he would often do after a very serious Raga. This I will edit and upload at a later time.
Pandit Mohan Shyam Sharma accompanied Khan Sahib on Pakhavaj, Zaki Haider and Martin Spaink on Tanpura.
Enjoy also the fancy lightning of the Rasa stage technicians. A bit to colorful for my taste, but somewhat catching the twilight mood of Marwa ;-)
    Carsten

    Liebe Freunde, Musikliebhaber & Musiker,
    Carsten

Dear Friends, I just received the sad news that Pandit Ravi Shankar left this world yesterday. I hardly saw somebody in this old age still radiating so much joy on the stage. My Pranaam to Panditji - may his Soul rest in the eternal Ocean of Sound.

Rudra veena in the hands of this master is just awesome. I believe the right ragas with rudra veena can easily trigger the blocked energies in the 7 chakras and one could explode to the ultimate brahman if done correctly. This instrument is so very unique. And this master did all these in vajrasana yoga pose. Just fortunate to even listen to these masterpieces. Gratitude.

i am falling more and more in fascination with this wonderful rag Marwa - the variety of forms it takes, and the emotions it touches! this one is contemplative; it seeks to make me recollect the events in my life that touched my emotions - the happy as well as the sad! What a structure this raga has!!! and the way the ustadji seems to be able to make the instrument express whatever he wants!!! it REALLY becomes an extension of himself. Thank you ever so much, Herr Wicke - i revere you as one of my gurus!

dear tmadhava menon, i'm happy to rerad about your deep listening experiances. listeners that can perceive all the the subtle details are almost as rare as the musicians who create them. i admire your devotion for listening to the Veena. and yes, Ustadjis handling of the Queen of Indian string instruments is certainly unparallelled.

listning to this full length after about a year - though i have been returning to it more often, though not full thro it. The charm heightens - i lose myself in the depths of this raga, and how it becomes reality in the hands of the great Master. silence and sound play hide and seek around 24 to 30 on the track, and the intrigue is fundamental!

The maestro is playing in the Dhrupad style which is more spiritually oriented, while Ravi Shankar played in a style derivative of Dhrupad called Khyal which emerged much later and which aims to entertain the audience than just being a spiritual music.

I don'tmean to be offensive but this instrument needs redesigning. You are a good player but a lot of these are truly reprehensible and apthetic. - I'm not going to edit this. I have considered a redesign of the rudra veena for more complex music but what has been revelead / shown to me is that even you, and you're really good, could not think of this concept because I think you were brought up in another musical "school". I'm not so fond of spanish guitaring, and classical guitar can also be annoying sometimes. Japanese sakuhachi music is especially highly entertaining on a D minished (7th, I'm not surtr). Anywas Hopefully I acn design my new post-modern rudra-veena withoiut being executed. But you guys should learn a WAY different buz that's terrible, I can hear even you get bored and uninspired with your own shit. the chinese call it the "Bull's horn". there's only so far you can go. However I have at least ideologically designed a new instrument but since 2015 I could not redesign it since I quit my job, I sawed the planks and made the measurements but life happened. Its stil amazing t haer you. You have any money, I will want to finish designing it I got some advice from an instrumentalist. I'm a bit at odds as I believe it could be reassembled at each "play/event/sitting" but he's argud about it however I believe that I am quite right in regards the "twinky" sound, in fact it may especially contribute to it, as only a part of the reassembly is.... "loose". I'm going to smoke a joint now. The rudra is an amazing instrument, but its a classical base. I'm not insulting you at all - I cannot begin to descsribe. I'm not going to continue either because its intense however it should be "built upon" and ist a difficult postulation without a visible exemplar of the theory devised, based on what you do, which is pretty amazing. Adn I'm sorry to say Ustad Ali Khan leaves me wanting to listen to maybe oh I don't know, vivaldi. Probbaly an incompetent man but I haven't listened to much, and he's probablkyu obsessed about theoretical micronotes, and I don't find him pleasant. Sadly sometimes you are also not pleasant but I think your interpretation of the intended design of the rudra is certainly a gift to other musicians who encounter you and this instrument, thanks - and no, I haven't played piano for over a decade, I did for 143 years though... yeah 143. I'm 267 now :D I meant 14.

    • @RudraVeena
      @RudraVeena  3 роки тому +10

Obviously an millennia old instrument needs to be updated and eventually rethought with the change of times. This has happened and is happening. Basically this mother of Indian string instruments is almost obsolete today since over the past centuries new musical forms developed within the Hindustani Raga music, that could find more adequate musical expression not only on redesigned but even new instruments. Like the Sitar and Surbahar that inherited some of the instrumental structure but much more so instrumental and musical techniques from the Rudra Veena.
I personally have been working for the last decade on manufacturing some Rudra Veenas which are rather a optimised and tweaked versions of the same instrument. I can think of many more improvements, from solving the inefficient logistic of the instrument right to a digital version. But than time, means and energy are not endless and one has to decide where one puts his focus. I'm rather a musician than instrument maker. So I put my weight there.
But since you seem to have so much thought about a new Rudra Veena/ instrument that possible can be used even outside of the musical context of Raga music - well we are all looking forward what you come up with. Of course not only in thoughts and words, but real life creation. Maybe once the air and mind have bean cleared of from whatever you smoke.
