    I noticed you mentioning (quite a few times) that you didn’t know the reason why certain functions or features on this camera exist.
    1) The webcam function is intended for people who want the “professional” video quality as well as the different focal lengths or use of shallow depth of field while doing a live stream, interview, conference calls, etc. Which is not only useful in the UA-cam era, but especially so in the Covid era.
    2) Bluetooth 5.0 is a big step up from Bluetooth 4.2 due to its instantaneous pairing, more reliable connection, and better data transfer. No more issues with trying to get it to connect, sudden disconnects, or slow transfer speeds.
    3) 16x9 crops are useful for people who are shooting images to be used as video thumbnails.

    • @KenRockwellTV

      Agreed. 16/9 is something best cropped later in production. Thanks!

      The nikon video/photo switch is so important for hybrid work - just revisited Taylor Jackson's R6 review and the way it switches is pretty useless for that type of work.

      @@terrywbreedlove yeah, that’s why any of the crop modes exist, really. It makes no sense for Ken to praise other crop modes then say that 16:9 for video thumbnails is “better done later in post production” 🤷🏼‍♂️

    I am really interested in the Z5. Quick question, though. I have sensitivity to the OLED flicker of the electronic viewfinder- it causes eye strain and headaches.
    An alternative is to shoot with the rear LCD instead of the viewfinder. Do you see that type of shooting as a hindrance- enough of a problem that it might be better to go with a full frame DSLR instead to have the optical viewfinder?
    I’ve played with one of these and it seems ok shooting that way- just not sure if it would really be a problem longer term in my weekly landscape shooting that I do.

      The whole point of these cameras is the EVF. If you’re not going to use it, then of course it’s better to use a DSLR. If you want to use just the little screen on the back, use an iPhone. Try the Z5 evf however, I’ve never notice and flicker and I often can see it if it were there.

    Thanks Ken. I have always appreciated you sharing your wisdom. I have learned a lot from you over the years. I appreciate your stance on Nikon vs Canon. There weren’t enough negatives in this camera to move me to Canon this time. I hope Nikon continues to find their way. I think the Z mount offers a lot of opportunities. Since I moved up from DX, I don’t have legacy glass and am moving mostly to Z mount. I have been impressed so far. One thing I will say about the Raw vs Jpg discussion is that people pay lots of money for these great processors in the cameras and don’t really utilize what they provide. They’ll take a Raw file and do the same things the camera would do, and end up exporting out a JPG anyway. LOL.

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV  2 роки тому +1

      Maybe, maybe not. You’d have to try it yourself. Sometimes off brands just don’t work; every lens is different. If it focuses with a screw head on the mount driven by an in-camera motor, it won’t autofocus on the Z5. If the lens has an internal focus motor, it might. It’s hard to say as not everything works as we’d like when you mix brands. Thanks!

    Right now I have a Z50, it’s takes great pictures but just feels like toy, no IBIS, no need for video because I find it easier on my iPhone pro. Stick with the Z50 and 16-50. Feeling like a toy makes it more fun and you’ll get better pictures. If you really want to step up, step up to Canon, and in nikon you can pay more, but the pictures don’t get any better. Hint: I only use dedicated video cameras or my iPhone for video. I’ve never been happy with the performance of Mirrorless or DSLRs for video. Thanks! PS : big sale on the Z5 if you really want to invest more deeply in nikon. The Z5 is very nice, too, just part of an inferior system from an inferior company (Nikon) who dumps production overseas to save themselves cost and has much poorer support than Canon. See my real Z5 review at www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/mirrorless/z5.htm and RP at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/rp.htm the Z5 is great, just not a fan of the nikon system today.

    I recently got a Nikon Zf and I'm looking to aquire a second backup body, that's affordable and takes my Z mount lenses. Honestly, I’m leaning towards the Nikon Z5, but with the recent price drops the Z6ii is not much more and is appealing also. Nearly everyone I've spoken to who actually owns a Z5, LOVES it. I love my Zf, but I want something that will act as a more ergonomic and compact backup. I shoot portraits and headshots and an occasional family session. I don't need speed, and I don’t plan on doing video with this backup. I played with a Z5 in the store a bit and it felt really nimble and great to use. In use, I couldn’t really tell much difference between the Z5 and Z6ii. Both nice.
    Would you recommend the Z5 as a backup to my Zf? I know it’s not as technically advanced or fast but I don’t care. One look at the files the Z5 creates and I’m sold. Would you recommend the Z5 even now in 2024?

      Are the issues your own error? If so, new camera isn’t likely to change anything. The D750 and Z5 are night and day different. The DSLR handles much faster; choose it for moving subjects. The Mirrorless is only for things that hold still and takes much more tine to set up snd adjust - but you can see everything in the finder. If you already have lenses that may change your ideas. Avoid DX lensss on the d750 or Z5. They each use very different lenses. If you go Z5 that’s a completely different system from the D750 and you should consider this as a good time to upgrade to Canon because you’ll wind up buying everything new for the Z5 - so may as well do the same for Canon does this help? I had subsequently bought a Sony A6000 awhile back to use instead as I no longer had confidence in the D7000. I mainly have FX lenses with only 2 x DX lenses. Since I don't have too many DX lenses and more FX based ones I am leaning towards a FX body. Yes after watching your videos I understand I would have to get the Z mount lenses. The only thing is the EOS RP might be due for a replacement. Yes I am not convinced that I should be going mirrorless since that would make all my F mount lenses useless. I know the D780 is very decent, but I think the D750 will be more than enough camera for me. I was also considering the D810, but the D750 would be newer. Yes your reply helped solidify my thoughts.

      Ken has lost his mind. Nikon isn’t going anywhere and RF and Z ecosystems are comparable. RP is not good. I had the RP and quickly got rid of it for the R6. The RP is lacking in many areas compared to the Z5. DPReview compared the two check that out. Z5 dominates in all categories and they didn’t even mention the Z5 has in body image stabilization and RP doesn’t. Z5 $999 right now until end of weekend.

      The Z5 will require all FX lenses, otherwise its a waste of time if you use the same DX lenses from your Z50 on it. It's a very similar camera; I don't understand all the camera buying on your part; what's wrong with your Z50? The Z5 id very similar. The Z50 is best with the tiny kit 16-50mm and maybe the kit 50-250mm and you're set for everything.

      @@KenRockwellTV i understood z5 need fx lenses. What i meant was, if i were to buy z5, definitely i will buy some fx lenses, i will not use dx lenses on z5. I understood that z5 will automatically do the crop. In fact, i have some other f-mount fx lenses which i used ftz on z50. So, my thought was, if i plan to buy another body which is fx, is it worth to buy z5 since i have z50 (if you think the profile is almost the same as z5) or shall I go for higher like z6 or z7?

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV  3 роки тому +1

      When the Z5 crops to DX it has much less resolution than the Z50. Don't do that. Why buy more stuff? I don't know what you're trying to shoot, and honestly I prefer the Z5 for its better controls and smaller size than the older Z6/Z7 II. The Z5 isn't very fast; but guess what, the AF of the Z6 II and Z7 II is also pretty bad even if they run at higher frame rates, so I'd stick with the great Z50. If you want a better camera, it's smarter to step up to the Canon EOS R6 or Canon EOS R5 than throw more money into Nikon. It's not 1983 anymore, Nikon hasn't been the top pro camera since the 1990s..

      Correct. Nikon is now a small company with very limited resources and few lenses and not likely to have many new ones. Therefore you’re stuck with F mount macro lenses and the FTZ adapter. See www.kenrockwell.com/tech/best-macro-lenses.htm#nikon and know that only FX and afs lenses will work best on the FTZ and Z5. Get the 60mm f/2.8G or ideally 105/2.8 VR. You have to open and close the diaphragm manually for focus and then to shoot. The finder gets dim at small apertures because the camera has no data coupling to the lens to have any idea where it’s set. Program and shutter priority modes don’t work. Needing to upgrade my D600 at some point to mirrorless full frame the inability to shoot with manual Nikon ai/ais mount glass with proper exposure preview... because the FTZ adaptor is holding the aperture blades open all the time (like an SLR/DSLR with an OVFnot an EVF)...was almost a deal breaker...!!!!! and then with a little head scratching... I realised that there is a solution... although unfortunately it means spending even more money (around £45 on top of your new camera and FTZ Adaptor noooo) on a K&F Concept Nikon ai to Z Adaptor.... with manual control of the aperture open and close lever.... to get the same experience that we all Love of using manual lenses mounted on any other mirrorless camera....!!!!! Just Please tell me that it doesn't treat af lenses in the same way, not giving you real time aperture and exposure preview (instead insisting on acquiring focus wide open like a SLR/DSLR and resulting in a really disjointed experience with no real advantage over an OVF) which with the ability to compose the entire shot in the viewfinder before taking the exposure is the very strength of mirrorless cameras that we've all been waiting for and enjoying (with fuji etc and manual glass) for the past ten years. Would be Amazing if Nikon could put a constant/manual aperture mode into the next firmware for the Z5 Z6 Z7 and Z50 to make it a much more seamless experience without having to spend an extra £50 on a non smart adaptor in order to use Manual Ai/Ais and D glass.... or a mode to get the same experience and full realtime image preview with f/g mount lenses.... Be really grateful if anyone could chime in on how the Z cameras behave with F/G and Z lenses in this regard as this could also be another deal breaker as well.... even though AF speed might take a hit by not being able to focus wide open and then close down for each individual exposure.... Be really grateful for any advice or if any one else could chime in and shed any light on this..... Till then I'll have to stick with my Beloved but ageing XT1+ speed booster and beautiful selection of manual glass as a mirrorless counterpart to my D600.... and poss hold off on a Z50 as a mirrorless stopgap to be able to use all of my Nikon af - F/G glass.... till I can afford a Z6 as a replacement....Thanks Chris :)

    Finally got the Z5 with that tiny little kit lens. My first ever foray into full frames, jumping from that entry level APS-C Canon I've been using for years.....so far I have been astonished with the quality of the photos, especially so as this is the quality from a kit lens, not even from an 'S' lens. With IBIS and weather proofing and practically the same magnesium build and button layout without skimping on any single button from the Z6/7, this camera is a bargain!

I’ve only broken one in the last two years. This looks like a perfect time to swap to mirrorless. I fancy the 28-200 and maybe the newest wide to telephoto zoom. Do I need fx? I honestly don’t know. • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV  8 місяців тому +1

      This isn't like cars, where different makers all make very close to the same thing. Nikon and Canon are quite different. The Z5 is old and heavy (670g), having come out in 2020. R8 is a much smaller, just 461g, (⅓ lighter!) and more compact camera and came out only a year ago. The Z8 has no mechanical shutter as those have been made obsolete by the newest sensors; mechanical shutters are a hold-over from before sensors could read-out all the data to let them work with flash; R8 has both first-curtain and fully electronic shutters. However the Eos R, RP, A7iii and A7Riv are not better at AF than Z6/Z7 ii especially after the recent firmware updates. When there’s complaints about the Z af it’s always with full auto (camera picks subject) continuous tracking of fast moving small subjects like birds, but guess what RP, R A7iii etc aren’t great at that either. I shoot professional sports with R6 and Z6ii. Both get great results. Eye af for both are same and super accurate. R6 is better with full auto tracking when I don’t want to think at all, but that camera also has drawbacks - worse battery life, worse plastic like build quality, I find Z lenses to be better than RF, for AF-S single point Nikon is more accurate. I'm surprised some new-age nuts don't advocate shooting digital at high ISOs without noise reduction. Thanks!
