  • Was redoing my work area downstairs and was putting out my rulers and thought I'd do a quick video on them. These are not something most people use or buy these days but I still get a kick out of them. I usually pick them up at estate sales or garage sales and always keeping on eye out for different ones.

50 years ago the lufkin extension rule was part of my everyday work tool collection, wouldn't trim a house without one.

I have a Stanley #116LG Lifeguard Engineer 6’ rule. It has ft in. ft in. on one side and ft in tenths and hundredths on the other side. Also have old Lufkin Red Ends that I still use. Great for bench work!

The metal folding one and the Stanley new Britain one are cool... never seen those before. Pretty cool also that you have your grandfather's old ruler. Take care of it and you can hand it down.

I like have a folding around when I am doing carpentry. I am going to have to start looking for used ones because the new Lufkin folding are crap. I just did a video about them, I also got a folding plastic ruler that works but isn't cool.

The numbers are reversed on your Bell Lufkin because it's a inside (flat) read rule....meaning you can lay flat on your work without unfolding the whole thing.

I've found a few videos on UA-cam that explain the scales.. I can't verify how accurate they are but just enter it into the search bar and they should pop up.

The Stanley 62 is superior to the others. It gives you a ruler in inches and eighths, inches and sixteenth, inches and tenths for engineers, as well as scales of 1/4" == 1' and various others for reading blueprints.

Rule... not ruler. I have used them for 55 years, and have at least 25 new old stock of the Lufkin 966. The new ones are junk.
