I just want to commend your son for starting on a journey I took many years ago. I built my first car starting at 15 thru 18 a 1971 Chevelle SS with a great mentor. This led me out of High School where I worked as a bank teller. Not for me. I then worked at a Ford dealership for 1 day ad that wasn't for me. Next over that summer after Graduation I applied to the military and was turned down due to a heart condition. Well now what? I was with my mother and we drove by this non descript building that had a sign "Mechanics Wanted", having no idea what I was going to do with my life, I stopped in. I had tools so I believed I could fix what they had. Well my interview took place in the shop managers office with engines screaming in the background. I couldn't even hear the questions being asked. However I landed the job somehow. $3.37 an hour. Well as time progressed I wound up running the shop with 27 mechanics, 14 drivers and became a valuable asset to the company. Next chapter as the company was an equipment rental house I learned the business side of things and went into sales which I was extremely successful as I could sell from the technical side of things. So here 37 years later I was able to travel to 45 states on the company, saw what America is really about and I am an operations manager over 23 of the greatest workers I have ever met. That little mechanics job has provided a great life for my wife and children and am grateful for the journey I took. I learned what the real world was about and how to navigate it.
I couldn't have said it better... (and i tried and tried..lol..) outstanding comment.!!! my journey was very similar to your comment and it certainly struck a chord with my memories,, remembering on days like these.
if you angle your board and batten strips it allows water to fall behind better. I usually do a 45 degree angle to remember it easy. Paying more than you would have for the 6x6 is going to be the new normal.
Heath you hit the nail right on the head with this video. We just sold our home in southern Arizona and followed our dreams to start a homestead in Tennessee. So far it hasnt been easy, but I look forward to the future of having something amazing to show for all of our efforts! Everyday I keep hearing your voice in the backgroud.... "if you dont go out and try, its never going to get done". Thank you for doing what you do and inspiring us!
Great advice. My first job out of high school was running a backhoe and working on a farm, I didn't love it. 20 plus years later I run all kinds of equipment and love my job. My dream as a kid was to run equipment. I've had all kinds of jobs in between and liked some, hated some, it's great to love your job and be appreciated.
Your discernment about life is right on. My life certainly changed in the last 8yrs and now I don’t even have the stamina to do heavy lifting for myself, and that can happen in a heart beat or not, in the blink of an eye! Push forward for as long as you can Heath and Cedar and may it be for a long healthy life for you both.
Amazing blue skies, still keeping my fingers crossed that you will get a green house on the side of your home. Nothing like having a sunny warm spot to grow things in the depth of winter. Porch looks great. Thanks for sharing.
Always enjoy watching your stories, especially when you add video from the past as you did at the end of this one. Good job my friend, God's blessings continue!
My dad tried talking me out of taking the job I currently have been working for over 15 years now. He had previously worked the same job a number of years before that and hated every day of it. While I see more of my similarities to him as I get older I also have realized that there are quite a few differences as well, and preferences in what worked for each of us in a career was one of those differences. In about a half-dozen years I will retire from that job that my dad couldn't wait to get out of. It isn't a glamorous job and while I won't retire wealthy because I waited too long in life to start saving money, I will leave the job financially comfortable when I retire.
You were so lucky to go to Yellowstone before the floods. Down here in Texas it goes from flood to drought regularly. You keep your knees above the water level during the floods and clean out the cleared bottom of the stock ponds/lakes during the drought. Now that the porch is finished did you ever think of just digging the new post footers on the other side of the old ones? Yes the porch would have been two foot wider but it would have saved you the effort of removing the old ones.
Hi Heath Cedar and kids, we’re a family of five from England who look forward to all your videos, we love your family values. Your an amazing family god bless you.
Hey Heath loved that the music was low and slow.. I'm deaf in one ear and it seems that the other ear is magnified with sound but I do realize I am just one person and you can't cater to everyone.. Always look forward to seeing the family grow and the progress you're making.
I love to listen to you voice your philosophy! Bravo ! I also like to watch you (and your wife and family) build your homestead ! Many blessings to you all !!!
34 years ago, I took a job with the Water and Sewer department in my home town. The senior men there told me, this is a job of service. Your real boss is the taxpayer. The little old widower who was on a fixed income. The young couple just starting their lives. I have always focused on that and it is still my focus. Regardless of anything, I will be there 24-7-365. Or until I croak probably lol. I love it!
The board and batten is beautiful!! I’m happy for you and your family!! As far as your son’s job; give him the advice your Dad gave you about repeat quitting. And support him as he takes on his first full time job!!
I was a small town mechanic right out of high school, I did it because of my love of cars. Well I can tell you after 20 plus years I moved on from it. As my love for cars dwindled and absolutely hated working on my own cars after working on cars all day long. I wish I had changed careers a long time ago as I’m much happier. But you never know how something is going to go until you try it. Great video as always.
Very Good advice. I started as a mechanic, then went into selling auto parts, then into auto equipment ( wheel alignment, frame equipment, balancing, brake equipment, became licensed trainer, then into ( oil and lube, gas ) then became a licensed lube engineer. I spent 58 years on the road in sales, but (MADE) time for the family. As you stated, life is short, do what you like. I in joyed helping other people. 🤙🙏🙏
Your home is looking amazing, and above all I love all of the advice that you give I pray with all my heart that many young men and women listening and seeing your posts actually listen and take it to heart and follow a good path, so they too can start living and seeing their goals become real. Bye for now Rosemary🌹
I never realized how important a good side by side was to a homestead until we started ours. Years and years ago I use to give some of my favorite channels a hard time for spending so much money on those silly things...." why not just use an old Jeep or small pickup" I would say....but Now here I am using the heck out of my old Kawasaki Mule, LOL. Such a Necessary Tool on a Ranch, homestead, or Off Grid Property. I ALWAYS appreciate your pep talks Heath.....Thank you for them and for letting me know I'm not crazy in how I live my life.
Cool to see you came up to Helena to pick the 6x6 up. That's my current hometown. My family homestead was in the Helena Valley in the 1880s and my family has been here ever since
Your Fathers advice is still correct. What's wrong with being a mechanic in a small town, you can take that experience with you for your whole life, who knows he may end up in The Big City someday!
That's good advice to your kids. That's basically what we told our kids (I had four). Find out what you would like to do and what you can do that you like to make a living. With that kind of advice you think we're related! Question question! (Of course were not) I still say it's excellent advice for kids.
One of the biggest advantages we’ve found being self-employed is that we get up pretty much when we want to. Yes, we often work into the evening, and Saturday is a working day, but not being slaves to the alarm clock is awesome.
When you finished up the video I said to myself “ What a Guy” . Your comment was so on the money. Have enjoyed a good life, but sitting here approaching my 83 birthday I can’t believe just how fast time has past. My son at 50 has said a number of time despite making a good living how he wished he had pursued a different career. You can’t tell, them, but keep, providing good council to Rhett.
Trying different jobs to find where you fit, is not a bad thing. I followed in my father's footsteps and joined the British Army (he retired a full Colonel), as did my brother (who also retired a Colonel). I lasted 8 years and realised it wasn't for me. Heath thanks for the life wisdom, it is something that needs to be said regularly, life is hard. I enjoy your videos very much and the sharing of you thoughts. Thank you!
Best of luck to Brett! Learning what you don't want do do is as important as learning what you do want to do. Young people will have three or four long-term jobs these days.
Thanks. There is some great "philosophy" in what you say about life, family, etc. But.... We are also doing some "bank of mum & dad" for our grown-up youngens.

I have been everything from the after school floor sweep, to having every certification there is, and to management. All walks of the automotive world, from Heath's referenced "small town mechanic", to managing service departments at major dealerships. I think its great that he wants to go in to the trades. So many young people these days have known idea how to do anything. Out of school and a first job is exactly that - just a job! Here you learn how to get to work on time, handle your money and see what’s what in the world.
As always Heath you keep bringing life's goals to the table of what can be achieved if you have a passion to be successful in whatever you set your mind to achieve. It sometimes takes those steps on your own to harness that pursuit of a career or that idea that just needs some help to become successful. A taste of the real world sometimes helps push us. Rhett will be okay and will find his path he is Destin for and Callie can say her dad is a mechanic because he fixes things all the time. Be careful and stay safe my friend God love ❤ ya all
As much as you wheel and deal equipment and trucks you may need a dealers license 😂😂😂😂😂. You remind me so much of my dad, lol. That’s not a bad thing, he was a great guy
Awesome !! Another piece of equipment to be utilized.. Sorry to hear that your excavator has some troubles,if you need it that bad i would be all up the mechanics butt to get the job done!! But knowing you, you probably will find another one!! House is coming along nicely!! Stay safe my friend.👍🤓👍🤓Randy.
Nice video guys . Heath you speak some great words of wisdom. Regarding our kids finding their own path in life . My son as much as I love him , constantly keeps finding trouble . Not sure if he gets a kick out of it . He can’t keep a job . Been to the big house once due to mixing with the wrong folk . Yes he could have said nope that’s wrong . But he didn’t . Now he’s looking at doing a stretch in the big house again for assault . I’ve tried to lead him along the correct path but that seems to be impossible . Sorry for having an unload . What Heath said struck a chord that’s all . Regards from the old country x
NEVER allow children to find their own way. That is a sure formula to grief. Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.
@@JohnSmith-ug5ci I tried to lead my lad along the right path . He got bullied in middle school . My god what I went through everyday to just get him there . I had to go into work late to do it 5 days a week . I’ve never heard such hateful language coming out of a young kid . The school weren’t interested . I went to town on the school big time . Eventually I got somewhere where I was listened to. Sadly the damage was done physically and mentally with him .
“Allowing,” as if we really have a say in our adult kids’ life, our kids to find their own path can be some of the most difficult and aggravating thing in a parents life, but they often find their way at some point no matter how much advice and input we try to impart.

What he learns working there be it for a year or 40 will come in handy throughout his life.

Very well spoken in the whole video. I can support all that.
Great narrative! And the porch is looking good. I was looking forward to excavator vids, didn't realize yours was broke down that bad.
Good words of advice mate, awesome 👍
I think the light would look better up high centered above the door. Just saying. Keep your old Polaris too.
Great approach to life…totally agree…never stop!
Good guy really enjoy your chats
I love your thinking.
Looks good Heath!
Happy Father's Day
As always Heath you keep bringing life's goals to the table of what can be achieved if you have a passion to be successful in whatever you set your mind to achieve. Be careful and stay safe my friend God love ❤ ya all
Absolutely right. Your hobby can become your vocation, but you will no longer enjoy it as your hobby.
As much as you wheel and deal equipment and trucks you may need a dealers license 😂😂😂😂😂. You remind me so much of my dad, lol. That’s not a bad thing, he was a great guy
Can't believe you've had that exvavator 2 months already. The market is definitely cooling, keep your eyes out and something will pop up
I think the question to Brett is , can you see yourself in30 years from now. Keep up the good work
Bravo your Independence...
Looks like you all got out of Yellowstone just in time. Good luck. Looks great.
My goodness! Your seasons sure changed quickly at the end of the video!
Genuine with great advice for the undecided in life.
Very well said Heath, great video and thanks for sharing!!!👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍🤩🤩🤩🤩💯💯💯💯🙌🙌🙌🙌
A welcomed message at the end of the video that hopefully doesn't go unheard by the masses!
I so identify with your story. Thanks for sharing
As long as he breathes he can change. Let's pray that he turns his life around.
NEVER allow children to find their own way. That is a sure formula to grief. Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go;
even when he is old he will not depart from it.
Hello Red Poppy and thumbs UP!!
Love your message Heath. Thank you.
I want to tell you I am from a country called Algeria and I did see all of your videos from the beginning
Thanks for sharing
Who would have known your next career would be as TV Producer and Star, well done!
