Replacing Bike Shifter Cables
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- The cables on this mountain bike had been left exposed the weather and had a surface rust on them. They looked ugly, so I replaced them with brand new shifter cables. The shifters are Shimano Rapidfire trigger type shifters. I also replaced all the cable housings and adjusted the derailleurs.

Thank RJ, this video is always my hand-on guide when replacing the shifter cables. Your instructions are very helpful.
I learned that instead of shifting a bunch to get all the cables to settle before the final adjustment, first shift into the largest cog on the cassette/freewheel, then just pull hard on the bare wire that runs along the down-tube. Pull hard but just not enough to hurt or cut your hand on the wire. Then all ferrules and any other seating will be complete.
Hi. I have a doozy of a question for you, which I hope you can shed some light on it. I recently received a Raleigh of a clunker, the front derailleur cable was holding on to dear life. I sprayed some WD40 into the housing and waited, till I pulled the cable out, I thought. Is there a way to get the remaining cable out without cutting the portion of it. I tried to push a new cable hoping it would move, no luck. The cable is a retro spiral housing which you cannot purchase any more. Do you have any ideas ?
Love your videos RJ. I often work on vintage road bikes; they often have cable stops that lack a slot to put the cable in without having to undo the cable at the end. Is it safe to cut those old stops (maybe with dremel cutting wheel or hack saw?) without compromising the integrity of the stop or frame? I thought for sure you'd have a video to demonstrate the best way to do this. I'll wait...
I wonder how long people go before spraying their cables and/or replacing them?
I think it’s an Awl not scribe tool, good video.
Keep up the good work ❤️💯🔥👍
I bought a Shimano MTB shift cable set Y60098021, google it, and it has one cable housing end/farel (like you call it) twice as long as the others and half of it is flexible. What is it for?
I'm about to begin a restoration of my 2000 Trek 7700 Multitrack which was flooded after hurricane Sandy. These videos have been an invaluable resource!
So much effort because of segmented cable housing. Thanks for showing how to adjust the derailleurs. Do have one that shows adjusting the stops?
Always use the original bike cable plastic housings, that's what I did.
The housings wear too. Replace them.
@@RJTheBikeGuy The cable housings are still ok and there is no sign of really bad wear on it.
Why some bicycles have exposed cables and some have full cover cables with the cable housing thorough the frame
RJ. Do you think it's a good idea if I put cable housing on the top where the wires go or do you think that will constrict the movement of the wires. I only would want to do this just to protect the wire from elements. What do you think?
You can do that. Generally housing is removed like that to reduce compression and make for crisper shifting.
Thanks so much! Great video tutorial
If you oiled them they would not rust
Cables wear out. Cable housings wear. Oil doesn't play nicely with the placing linings in the housings.
Cant see what you are adjusting the camera was too low!
Great video RJ. Also, I've seen some mechanics put lubricant on the bare cable before threading through the new cable guides. Supposedly it's to slow down oxidation of the exposed cable... Do you think it makes a difference? Thanks.
It can be counterproductive with modern cable linings.
richpin is that you? LOL XD
Thank you for posting the video 👍 🍺
Thanks for the video - very helpful! I just have a question about technique: I notice you use the barrel adjuster front and rear to get the shifting tautness correct. I had always thought barrel adjusters were initially left tight and then used primarily to fine tune on the road. Is it not better to leave the barrels tight at installation and instead tighten or loosen the cable to ensure proper shifting? In the video the rear barrel adjuster was unscrewed almost to the point of coming off which could be a problem eventually (i.e. No room for further adjustment or, worse, falling off).
Old deraileurs are adjusted using that method. U should always have your cable tension tight. Newer deraileurs come with limit screws to adjust it to a point where it shifts quite nicely and the barrel is used to fine tune it also called indexing
Wish I could like this video more than once
Thanks for the helpful walkthrough.
What did you end up doing with this bike? You put quite a bit of work into it
I sold it.
Hi RJ I'm liking your videos a few a few bikes up a bit from them. I like how you always say why you doing something :)
I'm fixing up an old Schiwnn 12 speed and and to pur new cables on bc the old ones broke. If you dont have any old housing to measure off of, can you just guesstimate? Or does it make a big difference? Do you have any video reinstalling cables on any old 12 speeds with levers shifters or does it make a difference?
+ROLLLERS Im also trying to install some old style brakes on a moongoose 20 inch do you have any videos on how to install old style brakes brakes on a 20 inch bike?
+ROLLLERS I have other videos where I replace the cables and housings and show how to figure out the length of the housings. You need to have enough housing so that when you turn the handlebars, it doesn't bind. And you want smooth curves also.
Yea, nothing is worse than a cheap ol pair of cable housing covers
You mean cutters?
is it easy to push new cable through old housing mine is in good shape ??
Housings wear and deteriorate too.
How do you call the think at 9:10 ?
A " crimp - on "??
Im sorry english is not my mother language...
Crimp-on cable ends.
Shifter end cap
Hi, I have a Frankenstein bike (bit of this and that) and it slips gears. Only gears 1234 are stable. Before I tuned it after watching this video it was only 1 and 2.
What could the problem be? Chain? Improper tune? Dodgy gears on the cassette?
Help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!
+Billy Schneider Maybe the shifters, derailleur, cassette are incompatible. Maybe the chain/cassette are worn. Or maybe slightly out of tune.
+RJ The Bike Guy My hubs inner workings aren't all there it seems... I think this may be my issue.
Could be. If the wheel is not solid and it is moving around, or lots of play, that would screw up shifting.
So cool bro
awesome videos sir!! im actually looking for a derailleur hanger for a track fork end (horizontal dropouts) is there such thing???
Yes, there is such a thing. I have not used them though. Here is one I found at Amazon:
www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00629O8YM/ref=nosim/youtube25-20
If you search google for "derailleur hanger horizontal dropout" you can find some other makers and designs.
thanks a lot but how do you install this hanger? i would like to know before actually buying it
It slides on to the drop out. There is a part that fits into the drop out to hold the hanger straight. And there is a tensioner to pull the axle back.
I love your videos, and have started to fix up a Fuji Allegro I picked up. I'd like to replace the cables and housing on the shifters and brakes. Can you recommend a brand? Does replacing the cables on one bike really cost more than $50. It is probably more than the bike is worth to me.
I just go to the local bike shop and buy what they sell. $50? I am assuming that is what the bike shop quoted you? That includes labor. The parts don't cost that much. Price varies from shop to shop. You will want to measure the housings on your bike so you know how much to buy. Brake cable housings and shift cable housings are different, so keep that in mind.
Not including labor the LBS wanted more like $70. Amazon seems to be selling them for $30 for shimano shift cable kits, and $12 for brake cable kits. Is the issue that I'm trying to buy for one bike, or that it is a kit versus knowing exactly how many feet/inches of cable/housing I need?
The bike shop charges me a buck or two per cable, and then I think a buck per foot for the cable housing. Then get some ferrules and crip ends, but those are pennies apiece. The Shimano kits are probably a higher end cable.
Thank you.
is there a difference between grip and trigger cables?
No.
@@RJTheBikeGuy thank you sir.
What about one with the twist shifter?
You gotta look through my videos. I have like over half a dozen videos replacing the cable in different model grip shifters. The derailleur part is all the same.
Do you fit stainless cables
Not usually.

Cool icon pic!
Thanks.
Is there a brand of cable that you like best?
Not really.
