This was a tremendously brave and well argued speech at LU. The students there didn't come in or leave agreeing with some issues but they left giving a firm nod to others, economic inequality, and gave consideration to some new views. For republican Christians that is a huge success, a testament to Bernie Sanders tailoring his message, giving LU respect and getting respect back from LU.
+Kroska1 If you want respect you have to give respect. Bernie is perhaps the one and only candidate who truly offers his utmost respect towards everyone he encounters.
Whether you agree with him or not,, at very least he speaks from his own heart and hasn't been purchased by some rich special interest pushing a corporate agenda. It takes real courage going to a place like this and not wavering from his beliefs while respecting quite the opposite. Im a republican but Bernie is whats right for this country.. Period.
It's good for him to try and speak to everyone. Instead of trying to only focus on certain demographics that these other jokes that call themselves politicians do.
Im catholic, why are you sad? Because this man wants every woman to have rights to make her own decisions on her own body? Would you rather the lawmakers, supreme court, senate, & house have a say to a womans body? I dont think so, in my opinion.
This is, I think, the best speech Bernie ever gave: he delivers his core message of both his 2016 and 2020 campaigns, and delivers it in the framework of the religious values we allegedly -- but don't -- hold dear. It still breaks my heart that he didn't win the nomination in 2016 on this message. Just think how different our country would have been in 2019 if he had become president in 2016.
It's so refreshing to see a candidate speaking to the biggest issues facing Americans today. Fixing income equality, living wages, affordable healthcare, wall street reform, taking wealth and special interest out of politics, helping families, women's rights... all things that I've been supporting for my entire adult life. When you really consider the facts and figures about income inequality in the US, how can you not believe that something needs to change? At the very least, no child should be going hungry or suffering from a treatable illness in the wealthiest country on earth!
I think if you really want to measure a politicians worth, find out what happens when they talk to people that don't agree with them on major issues, and still finding common ground while being respectful at the same time. Bernie is the real deal here; no shouting at the crowd about how they are wrong or "stupid", but stating his beliefs, and why he holds them, wile still taking their views into consideration. Class act through and through.
+Harrison Whitmarsh : Pastor Niemoller in speaking of the cowardice of German intellectuals in response to the Nazis treatment of the Jews. Apropos of Bernies point, If not him now, then who and when?
I admire his willingness to open civil discourse with people who he knows strongly disagree with him. Great speech, Bernie! When he opens his speech and says that it's important to engage in civil discourse with people who disagree with us, I thought about how on the right there has been an on-going attitude of 'we tell you what to do -- we don't have a dialog' -- a kind of bullying approach that G.W. Bush had.. Cheney had… and now we see a new crop of Republican presidential candidates saying, "I would not even talk with Putin…" etc. This is where Reaganism took us -- the cowboy - macho approach to the world --- But as the world's leader, with the strongest military by FAR, with bases in every country on the planet except a few like North Korea, it seems that talking with people from other countries is a good idea……… Thus a guy like Bernie seems at the very least to be rational. To me, he's the best choice by far. I wrote about him in a book. check it out -- www.amazon.com/dp/B012BCFJY6
I did read that Bernie supporters who traveled in were part of the audience and actually the most vocal. But there ARE times when it's clear that the majority are cheering, such as when he mentions that Liberty University is "religious". I agree with Senator Sanders that it's easy to talk to those who agree with you, and that we should have civil discourse regardless of how our views diverge.
I am a Bernie supporter in all respects but my parents would not be were they still alive. My father was a farmer but not in the usual sense--he raised vegetables under contract for large corporations and as such, some years made more than a million dollars. On paper, we looked wealthy though most of that money went back into the farm. But I also learned from his employment of migrant labor just how much people sacrifice to be able to feed their families, living in the barest of quarters for months at a time, working in the dirt and muck of the fields for ten hours or more a day. I worked with them during the summers, crawling 90 rod fields on my hands and knees, weeding onions and carrots or blocking lettuce. My dad also worked hard in the fields as did my siblings and our relatives and friends. Not all "wealthy" people are spoiled little rich brats. In the end, our family suffered what many farm families do with rough years resulting in the farm having to be sold to meet debts. My parents retired to a comfortable, but certainly not wealthy life. I'm a former union steward (now retired) and believe strongly in the rights of workers, the rights of women to govern our own health care and the rights of individuals to love whom they love and be able to marry. Appearances of the "wealthy" can be deceiving.
Huh? Who, left, right or center doesn't believe in womens' rights????? That said, there is a difference in opinion as to whether unborn children have rights. That's different. Interesting how much of a difference mic placement can make. The left wing applause was very loud because the mic was so close, but the right wing applause was obviously more numerous, even though it wasn't as loud and upfront. (compare 0:27 to 3:08) Interesting to hear how little applause there was for the comments about "common ground"....
+Dark-Union He only wants to pass the legislation for free COMMUNITY and I believe State colleges. Universities are still privately owned and they apply their own rules to students regarding tuition, since they're privately funded, not government funded.
No Q&A on this? Lame, I didn't want to hear his speech, I wanted to hear those literate in economics (the students) question the one who is illiterate on economics (Bernie).
Two things off the top of my head that he is wrong about: 1) the US is not the wealthiest country in the world. We have $19T in debt. 2) the US does not have the highest child poverty rate. I guarantee India is at least twice ours. He is a good man, but does not understand economics and will only grow the debt, grow the spending, and keep the nation a slave to debt.

+Chris Hare His office clarified that major meant countries in the OECD, but even that isn't true. I just hate it when politicians spin the truth by using words that loosely tie to other words and meanings just to rile up emotion. They hedge their bets that not enough people will factcheck, and that's deceitful. And in this case the claim using the OECD wasn't even true! The devil is always in the details.
+rokkinlen He's comparing our child poverty rate to other Western countries. We've tried letting the bankers and the military industrial complex keep the fruits of our labor. It hasn't worked and that has grown the debt. If we're going to grow the debt, lets do it by getting it back into the hands of the people.

Haha! Good one
WoW So much respect Mr Sanders!!!
his passion is amazing
he speaks uncomfortable truth
as a catholic that crowd makes me sad.

This is the very best speech Bernie Sanders gave to America...
that was amazing. this man is so great. how couldn't everyone there not be cheering for this rare and uniting individual.
Bernie, you make us all proud to be Americans. Together, we will save this country from greed and exploitation.

Great speech...
Prepare yourself and your family for what is coming:
Vote for Bernie, buy gold silver and bitcoin.

I would like to know how they vote next time before deciding if Sanders could heal their stupidity.
Not many claps for the kids. Not many claps for racial injustice. Not surprised from the look of that crowd and how smugly smiling some of them were.
Injustice only matters when it happens to me.
