I did this receipt some months ago and had tried the first bottles at Christmas, it turned out nice but would for sure benefit from more aging. I have still to do a side by side with the real deal, but as from what I remember, the original was a bit sweeter. Cheers

thanks gugge, I am planning on bulk ageing it for as long as possible probably until the weather warms up so hopefully that will get it on the right track

Cheers - I'm a big fan of this beer too! Looking forward to seeing how it goes. Big beers are worth the effort as you can just keep em around for so long in the bottle.

So, did you do a tasting video? How did it turn out? Looked amazing! I am going to bump it down to a 2 gallon batch and make that for Christmas 2019. It'll have 7 months to mellow out and I happen to have the Kona coffee beans. i haven't found anything as good as Founder's brews, but I really like the Backwoods Bastard. Seriously, all the Founders stuff is premium.

I'm a big fan of founders beers! Only one I really haven't liked was the barrel runner one, the rum barrels made it taste very much of hot alcohol to me

Great vid as usual - can I ask about the CRS addition? I’m still trying to work it out - but noticed you used approx 11ml of CRS to a batch of 17.73l (@170ppm). Some rough calculations means that this will equate to 0.6ml/l and reduce to approx 56ppm? I thought for big dark beers you still want the ppm to be slightly above 100ppm (say 120ppm?). Not trying to criticise at all - I’m really interested as I’m going to start using CRS for my next brews and want to check what my target ppm should be - you know a lot more than me!!

to be honest I don't really look at ppm for alkalinity/carbonates, I just work from the pH to figure the acid additions. the jims beer kit calculator is a good starting point for CRS additions but I would then adjust based on where your actual mash pH falls (mine needed a bit more to get the PH down where I wanted it).

Not much headspace! RIS tends to get the yeast very excited in my experience. My last one (with WLP002) blew the airlock out and spewed yeasty goodness everywhere.

James Collin yeah I am a bit concerned about that tbh! Going to see how it’s getting on tonight and probably fit a blowoff tube

Great videos BTW, particularly the MiniKeg tutorial. Building a stock of these to give beer to friends - funny they keep returning them empty.

thanks I worked out an easy way to get the hard plastic bungs out of the kegs the other day so might be doing a little follow up video to that one
