I don't like sitting on my wallet when I ride, so I keep my wallet in my saddle bag.
It's a chain wallet wirh a GOOD aftermarket carabiner. The carabiner is attached to my Leatherman Surge sheath.
The great thing about this system is that my Leatherman creates a good anchor point for my chain. When I get off my bike my Leatherman gets stuffed in my front pocket and my wallet in my back pocket.
SIDE NOTE FOR CAR DRIVERS: If you have a dog that rides with you a spare set of keys on your wallet chain comes in real handy if he/she steps on your door lock button while the car is running.

Here is what I bring for longer rides:
    Ratchet
    17 & 24 mm socket
    12 & 14 mm crescent wrenches
    Pliers wrench
    Combo pliers
    Side cutter
    Spare cotter pins
Small travel size can of chain lube
    1-2 Shop rags
Small bottle of medium strength Loc-Tite
An inflator is still on my shopping list. With what I have I can at least tension my chain and tighten loose bolts. Or help others if need be.
    Permanent fixtures are:
Antifog glasses cleaner - this has literally saved my life
Custom hearing protection (foam plugs are OK but they get uncomfortable for me after a while. YMMV)
    Rain coverall & visor wipers
    Microfiber cloth
    A head lamp
    USB power bank
    Some emergency cash
A membership at our local equivalent of AAA

I'd add rain gear & bungee straps to that setup. I never ride anywhere without them. You never know when the weather bureau gets it spectacularly wrong. And bungee straps are a lifesaver if one of your bag straps fails, you get sick of carrying your backpack or you make an unexpected bulky item purchase on the ride.

I carry my own variation of your gear with the addition of an often overlooked first aid kit. I carry one out of a Toyota Rav4 with a compression bandage and a CAT7 tourniquet in an easy to access bag. On longer rides I also carry a Garmin InReach mini. (thanks Ryan)

    • @spitescorner

The reason I didn't include a tourniquet is because I'm not really qualified to use one. Definitely should look into it though. First aid is good to have in the back pocket

  • @nukezat

Mini vice grips!!!!, a set of 3 cost 8 bucks at harbor freight and they will save your bacon if a cable fails.
Although convenient I wouldn't bother with and actual compressor, I prefer a few CO2 carts with a valve along with a dynaplug, its more compact and reliable.
As for screwdrivers, if you have a Japanese bike have a JIS spec Phillips screwdriver or bits.
Finally a compact jump pack or invest in a lithium bat with integrated jumpstarts.
For sunglasses, keep it cheap, a set of 3m tinted saftey glasses work great and keep the wind out

Get a knipex Cobra Mini and throw away all other pliers. Also if you get knipex mini cutters thats the last cutters you will ever need. I used both these tools in my last 4000 miles road trip. And they make smaller inflatora than that and you can put the inflation tube into the tool for better packaging.

You need a jump pack. Doubles as a USB battery to charge your stuff, probably comes with cigarette lighter adapters so you can charge it from a lighter socket *or* run lighter socket equipment from it. Flashlight, poss compass. And you want a SAE power connector on your bike's battery, with whatever adapter is best for you (cigarette or USB), so you can charge your devices while you ride. Phone batteries get real low real fast when the screen is on all the time for map directions.

Back when I was riding was riding with leather gear on, I got into the habit of always having waterproof overalls and glove covers in my bag. There was one time I checked the weather forecast and figured I wouldn't need them with me on my trip, but ended up getting more soaked than I've ever been in my life. I've had waterproof overalls with me ever since then until I started wearing a textile riding suit that is waterproof. Now I just need the glove covers. In winter time, there's three things I've found pretty much essential. Two of them are a gas lighter and lock de-icer because ignition locks and anti-theft locks will give you trouble otherwise. The third thing is a portable jump starter because freezing temperatures will take their toll on small batteries.

As a guitar player as well I think you should check out the eargasm ear plugs. You can stand right next to a full stack cabinet. The best part about them is that they don't degrade your hearing quality. I have tinnitus and I am sure it comes from a variety of things, but it was the wind in the end that broke the camels back. Laser lights seem like a great idea for a backup.

Makes me think I do something wrong, long ride or shorter ride, I never take anything with me, lol.
Except when I commute to work, I bring work related stuff. But no tire inflator, tool roll etc. I might organise one in the winter time.
Also in my defense I don't do long trips as in 2 hours or longer or cross country, but still it would be wise to have at least some things pre packed in case something happens and I can call someone to bring me the stuff if I didn't took it with me.

Investing in custom mounded earplugs, 2 if you can afford it, with different levels of attenuation is worth it. Also, a Zero Gravity battery which can jumpstart a bike (also does cars and even trucks). I also have a pair of mechanics gloves so I don’t get filthy with roadside repairs. Nealey plugs which are the best, s snacks so I never need to stop if I don’t want to, and a head.ignite in case any work needs to be done at night.
    Also, Ai
ai’s VAS-V visor system allows you a clear visor and then a shaded visor which you can have up, down, or some setting in between without even having to take on or off glasses. Comes in pretty handy when riding through trees and then into the bright sun again.

I ride all winter and haven't had a flat in many years so if I do ever need it, between disuse and being out in sub-freezing weather for months on end, possibly for years, I doubt there would be any charge left in the battery, especially if I'm trying to inflate a tire at 20 degrees F.
