      @ahlpym 8 років тому

      Well, he's usually running on the ground, and that wouldn't move. He's also usually running MUCH slower that he's capable of. However, this IS something he could technically do.

    • @vannaringle9224
      @vannaringle9224 8 років тому +17

      I guess technically yes. However the speed force is kinda a cheat code type of thing that stops that from happening. Basically the speed force bends the laws of physics to the Flash's needs.

    • @Melficzeero
      @Melficzeero 8 років тому +3

      +Sam Ringle doesn't the speed force remove friction from being a force that affects him in general, which is why he doesn't burn up clothing he wears that isn't his special suit, and would also stop him from kicking things up unless he kicked directly into them? that's how I remember it working anyway. that also explains why he doesn't melt the people he runs past with the air he'd be heating up

    • @brianmfogham1541
      @brianmfogham1541 8 років тому +1

      Sam Ringle Yeah I think the speed force also lessens the effects of speed in the real universe, that's why his suit does feel friction but not nearly the amount it should, or why when's he's running near light speed we can still see him as a blur even though in reality he'd be basically invisible. I also think Barry has some sort of subconscious control over it because he can still create tornadoes and infinite mass punches.

  • @DrMartinArcher
    @DrMartinArcher 8 років тому +24

    You've incorrectly applied this equation. In the scenario you describe its just conservation of momentum. The equation you reference is for continuous exhaust velocity but the Flash is just a single body!

    • @Nerdist
      @Nerdist  8 років тому +9

      But isn't the equation derived from COM? And I'm basically assuming that he is being expelled from the rocket under a short time period at tremendous acceleration. Am I wrong? -- KH

    • @DrMartinArcher
      @DrMartinArcher 8 років тому +3

      It assumes continuous expulsion of material at that velocity, so really you'd need multiple Flashes for it to be correct. The reality is its just a much simpler problem.

    • @Nerdist
      @Nerdist  8 років тому +6

      I just ran the calculation using simply COM, and yeah, the numbers come out the same. -- KH

    • @DrMartinArcher
      @DrMartinArcher 8 років тому +1

      Interesting. There's no way they're exactly the same (no way of introducing a logarithm with discrete bodies) but in this case, probably because of the huge mass of the rocket, I guess they come out similar.

    • @DrMartinArcher
      @DrMartinArcher 8 років тому +2

      Thinking about it, the similarity comes from the Taylor expansion of the logarithm for small values of the mass ratio. Doesn't change the fact that strictly that equation shouldn't have been applied in this situation, but at least your conclusions aren't drastically altered. Keep it up!

    From what I remember, Mass Relays create a corridor where mass is inconsequential, they don't so much reduce your mass as remove the effect of Mass on the Universe, in that corridor. And then Railgun you down it way faster than the speed of light.
    Plus, they're anchored in space with the awfully generic Quantum fields, so they don't get any of that "equal and opposite" stuff nudging them out of place every time they move something.
    So a Railgun *could* do it, if you had a load of Element Zero, fancy mystery field generators, and a quantum locked railgun.

      Look at photonic molecules, it's special, you'll see.

    • @NiamonDrox
      @NiamonDrox 8 років тому

      Well, theoretically yes... practically(in any atmosphere) no. You see, the smallest frictions would make that photons pushing force negligible (and that's an understatement) and so what it would do would (most probably) be a same negligible amount of temperature increase.
      Now a photon cannon (say a line-ac) could have some effect that would slowly but gradually increase the speed of any mass... but that is somewhere where that mass (or more like the volume of that mass) would be in void, with no friction to decrease the speed.
      Keep in mind that "in space" and "in void" are two separate things as in space quite a lot of pockets of particles are found (that is if we compare it to the outside of any galaxy).
      So, to sum thingys up, outside of any galaxy is the space where a linear accelerator based engine (similar to what you can find in any oncology institute)... there it would have the highest efficiency, not close to planets and the like...
      Cheers!

    • @JoeJoeTater
      @JoeJoeTater 8 років тому +3

      Yes, and it is a means that is seriously being considered for interstellar probes. Look up "Breakthrough Starshot." The idea is to blast a laser at a really light and reflective probe, pushing it forward. What makes it awesome is that the probe doesn't have to carry its own fuel, so it isn't subject to "the tyranny of the rocket equation." (another cool thing to look up)
      ... In fact, that's what really sucks about this video. He uses the rocket equation wrong and doesn't even explain the single most important thing about it.

    • @NiamonDrox
      @NiamonDrox 8 років тому

      JoeJoeTater
      well yeah, i guess you mean the mass of the rocket is actually a delta(mass) as the mass is gradually reducing as the fuel is being used... well, as i pointed in a previous post here, he gets more the one fact wrong... but the thing is that at least he gets the general public interested in science&tech! that is indeed cool! being math&fiz accurate is generally found tiring and boring by most of us humans :(

      In game it's an element called element zero, implying it has no protons, which gives off the effect of lowering the mass to achieve faster than light speeds. In other words it's probably complete bs based on fictional material, like unobtanium, and transformium, and phlebotinum. Note that the same material allows telekinesis in Mass Effect.
      I am interested in learning about any actual scientific concept that would lower mass like that though.

    • @memuu
      @memuu 8 років тому

      yeah, disregarding the fi part of that sci-fi game, I guess the question would be, how could we, in the real world, make a mass relay work, I wouldn't go with gravitons cause I think gravity could end up being an illusion, or at least gravitons seem to be a little far fetched compared to the other theoretical bosons.

    The Flash is able to travel faster than the speed of light by tapping directly into the Speed Force. He can even use this to go back in time. It's basically an Omega level power. Yes, he is quite clearly "fast enough" to do anything.
    HOWEVER! The amount of force caused by 88 kg instantaneously accelerating to 0.05 c would be roughly equivalent to a nuke or twenty. That rocket isn't going anywhere, at least, not in one piece. Not even if you made a blast plate out of proto-adamantium. That rocket is going to crumple like paper.
    Instantaneous acceleration is _violent_. You're basically talking about potentially infinite G forces. The fact that this rocket has to be pushed only once means all of that energy is going to be kicked into the rocket within mere moments, and a quick calculation of how many G's this thing would be pulling at lift off is going to be hundreds of thousands of G's.
    So yeah... he's fast enough. No, the rocket won't make it to space, intact. There is nothing strong enough you could build the rocket out of, and even if there is something that strong, anyone inside the craft would be turned into a puddle on the deck before they were even 10 feet off the ground.

    Question. 1) This is because, as Einstein's formula E = mc2 explains, energy can get converted to matter, and vice versa. Extraordinarily high-energy gamma rays, such as ones that black holes can generate, can yield pairs of electrons and their antimatter counterparts, known as positrons.
    2) Could the reason why the Hulk gets stronger the angrier he gets is because his blood, which is infused with gamma radiation, is pumped quicker so the kinetic energy results in more strength or his energy is converted into mass?
    3) If the above theory is true could this result in the idea that if the Hulk gets angry enough he could be creating so much energy that he could travel at speeds near that of electromagnetic radiation ( 299,792,458 m/s ) ?

    I have one for you: A double-jump, that is making a second jump in mid-air, is a pretty standard thing in a lot of video games. Smash Bros, Castlevania (a lot of platform games really), the Scout in TF2 are a few examples. Is there any way such a maneuver would be possible, assuming that neither jet boosters or magic were in play? Or, to put it another way, what forces would be at play to allow someone to essentially propel themselves upward in mid-air from the apex of a jump they performed from the ground?

    Some problems with this: 1) Accelerating a rocket to that speed essentially instantaneously would shatter it like an ice sculpture shot with an RPG. 2) Poor Barry would impact the ground below the rocket at 0.5%c and most certainly die. 3) The air molecules hitting his body at that speed would fuse producing a massive explosion like a hydrogen bomb, killing everyone else withing a dozen miles of the launch site, too. 4) The force of Barry hitting the ground immediately afterwards would cause an explosion so grand it would make the impact that killed the dinosaurs look like a wet fart; nothing on Earth would survive.

    a note relating to the answer during the credits: From what I Recall from Mass effect's Mass relay and FTL systems, the way they work is by booth reducing the weight of the Ship being Sent into FTL AND by creating a SUPER Strong Gravity well in front of the ship that's locked at a specific distance from the ship to make it "Fall" Forwards, this process Warps space/time in a way similar to the concept of a "Standard" Warp Drive (which I think the Real Theory for is called the Alcubierre Drive) except powered by Gravity PULLING the ship forward rather than Negative Gravity PUSHING it's bubble of space forward. and since Light is still going at the same speed relative to the ship within the bubble, the ship is "Technically" not going faster than the speed of light, and thus dodge the annoying effects of Time Dilation! (that way you don't arrive at your destination 100 years after you left having only aged a day)
    The Idea comes from the fact that Black holes, Being super-massive Gravity wells, "from which nothing escapes, even light" which it actually does by Bending space around itself, the light still "Going in a straight line" problem is the Space it's going in a straight line through is Curved towards the center of the Black hole, this is why Black holes can Trap even mass-less things like light... AKA, Gravity bends space/time.
    In short, Mass Effect's FTL Drive is the Idea of using a Super-massive Gravity well that is locked to a relative distance in front of the ship to warp the very fabric of the Universe to make the Relative distance traveled Shorter, the Relays serve as Gigantic Gravity powered Super slingshots to enhance this effect to levels that an on board Mass Effect Drive could not do on it's own, Allowing the ship to Jump across the Galaxy in a few hours or days at most!
    Hope I wasn't too repetitive. Would still love for you guys to do an episode on this just to see the comedic twists you could add to make it easier to explain in the future :P (Comedy and simplified comparisons make it so much easier to explain this stuff and be understood)

    "Mass Effect" works in universe on the idea you can negate or inverse (having negative mass) mass on the E=MC² equation, thus lowering the energy requirement for light speed, or faster than light space travel: it ignores a whole other bunch of principle of general and special relativity though.
    It's an antigravity particle (The "Element Zero", or "Ezo" for short in game), which works with electric gizmos, and even the electric activity of the brain "explaining" telekinesis and stuff like that

    Of course, the question is whether Barry could get to that speed fast enough :-) At least on the TV show, when he really needs to be so "very fast" that his speed turns into a critical plot element (is there a formula for this?), he seems to need quite some time to run in circles or something like that. So the question is -- does a rocket have enough room so Barry can actually run his speedup-circles? :-)
    Now, he can run through buildings or around a street corner, so corner radius seems to be mostly a non-issue. In day-to-day running -- plot-element speeds usually seem to happen in larger structures...

    This video gives a great example of just how astoundingly fast the speed of light is, when 1/200th of that can provide enough kinetic force for the mass of a single man to propel a rocket into space. Now take that realization, and apply it to the fact that it takes nearly 5 years for light to travel from the next-closest star in our galaxy to our own sun.
    Dat galaxy be fuckin' HUGE mang!

    Another Flash-related question: Why doesn't Flash blow things up when accelerating to ludicrous speeds? Every time I think of the Flash in terms of science, I'm brought back to xkcd's "relativistic baseball", which posits that air molecules wouldn't be able to displace around the object, which would cause the air particles to fuse and release what's essentially a thermonuclear blast that would decimate whatever city he happens to be in. So I guess the bite-sized audio clip version of the question: Why doesn't The Flash destroy everything?

      I have a theory: perhaps The flash's electricity trails is just a way to slow down the kinetic energy and temperatures of surrounding molecules. Read about laser cooling, fast moving molecules are being decelerated down by a huge a ammount of upcoming photons. The photons are later being absorbed by the flash as a form of electricity which explain the flash iconic blue / red electric effects.

    Kyle, Question!
    Can Superman enter the Speed force / tap into the Speed force?
    ...
    In the comic, Injustice: Gods Among Us #23-24, ( Which is cannon ) Superman stops a full scale planetary invasion within seconds... Before he does this, he not only catches up to the flash, but stops and talks to him, which appears to have time slowed down / at a stand still while they talk.
    At the end of the comic, the Flash stands in awe and shock on what just happened.
    ...
    In the comics / animated shows / movies + games, Superman can still keep up with him, if not, “ out move “ him. Especially in a 1 v 1 fight between them.
