I happily remember the good old days between 2006 (when I bought my first MacBook (in white polycarbonate)) until the introduction of the Retina Macbook Pro in 2012 when accessing the memory and harddrive was hassle-free. I miss those days. Being able to change/upgrade those parts (i.e. adding memory and swapping the harddisk for an SSD) kept my 13” MacBook Pro from 2009 running until 2023, and although it was mostly used for watching Netflix on by my children for the last couple of years, it still managed to provide some kind of value. It’s nice to see that it is (in some sense) possbile to upgrade the storage on the new MacBook Pros, but this is beyond anything that I will venture into - unfortunately. Thanks for the video.
If this kind of computer repair existed in my area, i've wanted to upgrade to a larger ram and probably add 1TB more making it 2 TB and not spend too much money on a newer macbook with higher specs. It still cost more when trading in
Would you please share the temperatures you used for desoldering (degC) and soldering (degC)? Do you have a link to compatible NANDs for the Macbook Pro M4 Pro? Is the NAND the same as in the Macbook Pro M3 Pro?
Considering this is much cheaper albeit riskier than paying the 'Apple premium fee' (paying more for extra TBs), I'm wondering how can I get myself a 4TB MacBook Pro M4 Pro/M3 Pro with 4TB already installed Without paying the 'Apple Premium fee'. Do I need to go to Shenzhen directly in order to get it?, or do I use your website?
I understand that part where you are increasing the memory from 512GB to 4TB, but there is a big difference noticeable in speed or reading/writing before and after the memory upgrade. Were you using FASTER memory than the original one that comes from Apple ?
Higher capacity chips are just usually faster either due to the topology of the memory controller/cache or other variables. It's not really about the speed of the NAND chips themselves i don't think. I mean it could be, but it's usually a limitation somewhere else.
Maxtech has repeatedly shown that Apple Macs are faster the more SSD they have , because it writes to all of them so you can get I believe 7 GB/S the same as in this video.
I am so happy with my 2014 MacBook Pro 15.4” Retina version. I can upgrade SSD much easier than M1, M2, M3 Mac processor. This is ridiculous upgrade. Apple is going to be greediness. The price is going up each year and tricky technology. I am sick of their nonsense design.
Looks nice in theory but I wouldn't trust this. MacOS updates will ultimately probably break this and who knows the quality of these NANDs. Too risky. Apple has done a great job for themselves when it comes to locking down their hardware and the headaches for rolling your own mods are just too great these days. If you want more storage either use an external or NAS or suck up the internal upgrade price.
Sounds like an iPhone flash upgrade. On the iPhone models with stacked PCBs and a lot of underfill on the flash chip the safest way to remove the old memory without risking damage to the PCB is to use a milling machine to mill the old chip away. Because you are basically milling silicon you need a very high spindle speed - and it sounds a lot like that.
