I wanted to show a quick and easy way to record usable drum tracks without an audio interface. I have a zoom h4n, which I usually use for filmmaking but thought it might be a quick and easy way to record drums cheap!
This digital recorder allows you to record up to 3 separate drum tracks and with a bit of adjustment, you can record your drums for under $150!
Came for the H4N, learned everything i need to know about audacity, thanks man! :D
Surprised no one's chimed in about this yet, but another great way to expand your recordings with an H4n is by plugging all your drum mics into a mixer, then running the stereo outs into the H4n. That way you can mix and pan your kick, snare, and toms how you like on the mixer, and use the H4n mics as overheads/rooms.
Agree 100%
The h4n Has no line in input :-/
@@card-joker5301 if you're coming out of a mixer then it's easy enough to simply pad down the feed.
Great video, very 'to the point' and alot of good insights!
Thanks for the audacity part it helped me!
The most helpful video on zoom recorder. Pretty much nobody is mentioning that after recording you have only TWO wave files, one of which you have to split in your DAW. Thank you.
the kick and snare aren't stereo, stereo means 2 *different* signals, if they have the exact same signal in both sides (L+R) it's identical to mono
you beat me to it..I was going to post a comment on this same issue.. excellent post man!
Why would the kick and snare have the same signal in both sides? (I’m not being rhetorical, I’m really asking) He’s got a snare mic and a bass mic into 2 separate channels on a 4 channel interface. 2 mics, 2 channels. How could that be the same signal?
@@DZNTZ if you play the same signal in both sides of the stereo (Left and Right), you'll hear as if the sound is coming from the center of both speakers, not specifically right or left, so mono
I don't understand the second part of your question, it's been 2 years since I commented but I think I was talking about 8:20
@@Gabrol Right, but how could a bass drum mic and a snare mic be the same signal? Two different sources, two mics, two channels
@@DZNTZ they share the same signal if you downmix to mono
Nice. Much better than the GoPro audio.
Thanks man! Thumbs up
Very helpful, thanks.
Can you use both -20db reducers and adjust recording levels accordingly?
Great video, thanks dude
That is great!
Cool Adam!
Thanks buddy!
Nice, what is the name of these db reduction devices ? Another question, for record playalongs....: can you record and play the music straight from the Zoom H4 recorder?
Thank you so much
Thanks man!!!
How do you know if it's peaking? Does it indicate it on the lcd screen? What indicates it? Is it the blinker or..? thanks
@ 6:57. Sorry for all the questions but this is really helpful but I need guidance. You said the top two tracks are Left and Right (mono) and it even says mono on them on your program. But then you said you choose "split stereo to mono". That's what I'm confused about. If they're already mono, why would you go "split stereo to mono". Wouldn't it be "mono to stereo"? Thanks again and I appreciate any feedback!
Wait... maybe the two tracks above are stereo and you need to split to mono to get two tracks? Still confusing because it says "mono" on the DAW. I guess my question is, do the two external mic files come out as one stereo or as two mono (like I thought) or one mono?
Brands of db reducers ?
Ok so how do you sync it with the video footage ? What program do you use ? Cause In the end you have the zoom recording instead of the original camera audio but it’s synced perfectly with the video footage . How do you get that done ?
@accordingtoadam
In The Blood Download a video editor, import the video and the track from the built-in camera mic, import the track from the drum mics, look at the waveforms of both tracks and find some ‘peaks’ and line the peaks up. That should work!
The answer is in Adobe Premiere, you can use the "auto sync" function.
Can you use the H4n's mic, and two independent xlr mics at the same time while using this in Audio Interface mode? And can you adjust the rec level independently for all three? For instance, to record a kick and two overheads?
Great question. I thought the same thing. Did you ever find out?
Yes, you just have to use the “4 channel mode” that has the lights near the top of the screen
Sorry, last question (and I'm a newbie so forgive me) but what is the sponge thing that you put over the onboard mics? What does that accomplish?
Whats the difference between the H4n and the H4n pro? Im really unexperienced in this stuff
@ 5:14 you say, "will put all this on two separate tracks". Does that mean between the onboard mics you get only two wav files or do you get three (one for each external mic, and one for the onboard mics)? Thank you.
Thanks for the great video! Just what I was looking for. Are you sure you get 3 wav files when you do 4-channel? Someone else said that you get one stereo for the onboard mics and one for the 2 external xlr mics. That didn't really make sense though. I would think it would give you two since you can set the rec levels of each one. I just need to make sure before I purchase because I'd like more files to mix, depending on the location of the mics and what I like or don't like from the recording. Thanks.
That's what I get. 2 files. Then I just split the bass & snare file into 2 separate tracks within REAPER
bud id like to know where or when you got these there like 30 to50 each?
Can I ask a basic question? What format did you record this at? I’m just getting started recording my band’s rehearsals.
Or, you can use Yamaha EAD10...with that thing you can do it all without complication...you can stream, your can practice, you can record, name it! Setted up in two minutes
Is it possible to live stream with this setup?
It does have a headphone/audio output, so i guess it might be possible to send the audio into your computer directly for streaming, but I've never tried it ???
What is that "decibel drop" thing ???
attenuation adapter
hey mate where did you buy those decible reducers ?
I think ebay... goo.gl/Pdm8z4
Way more than $1!
@@HipHopHistoryGuy Yeah, I looked on eBay and Amazon and they are between $16 and $35. When and WHERE did he find them for $1.
@@Phydoux2112 I never said they were $1. In this video, the guy said they cost him about $1. I wrote "way more than $1", meaning just like you found out - they were at least $15+. I have yet to purchase them for this reason.
@@Phydoux2112 He likely didn't. I think he misspoke.
